3 Instructions for Setup In this packet, you will find: Game directions Game board 27 time cards (blue; double-sided) 27 scavenger hunt cards (green; double-sided) Other materials you will need: Dice (1) Game pieces (different color counters recommended) Envelope or bag to store the game cards Nonfiction book(s) or textbook; you can use a different nonfiction text each time you play! Printing and laminating: 1. Print the game board by itself, either color or grayscale. 2. Print the game card pages double-sided. Color would be best, but printing in grayscale will be okay too. I recommend that you test your printer settings with a few pages to ensure that the front and back of each card line up correctly. 3. Cut out all of the printed double-sided cards. 4. Laminate the game board and all of the game cards so that they will last you for years to come. 5. Place the game cards in an envelope or bag for storage.

4 How to Play Object of the game: Be the first person to move around the board and land on the You Win! space. Get ready: 1. Set the game board, game pieces, dice, and nonfiction book(s) on the playing table. 2. Shuffle the time cards and place them facedown in a pile on the playing table. 3. Shuffle the scavenger cards and place them facedown in a separate pile on the playing table. 4. Each player chooses a color counter to use as his/her game piece and places it on the game board space labeled Start. Playing the game: 1. The player whose birthday is coming up next goes first. 2. The first player will pick up one time card and one scavenger card. 3. The first player will show both cards to the other players. One of the other players will keep time. When the time keeper says Go, the player will have the number of on the time card to search the nonfiction book for an example of the text feature written on the scavenger card. If the player finds a correct example within the amount of time given, he/she gets to roll the dice and move that number of spaces on the game board. If the player lands on a space with directions (such as Move ahead 2 spaces ), he/she follows those directions. If the player does not find a correct example and/or runs out of time before finding one, he/she stays on the same space and does not get to move. 4. Now the player s turn is finished and the next player s turn begins. How to Win: 1. Game play continues until one of the following happens: A player lands on the You Win! space. In that case, the first player to land on the You Win! space is the winner. The teacher calls time. In that case, the player who is closest to the You Win! space is the winner. Note: If the players run out of playing cards before someone reaches finish, the players should shuffle the deck again and continue playing.
