SHE S GOING TO BE EXECUTED. GOOD GRACIOUS! WHAT FOR? RABBIT: SHE PUNCHED THE QUEEN OF HEARTS IN THE NOSE. (ALICE LAUGHS OUT LOUD) QUIET, THE QUEEN WILL HEAR YOU! (COMFORTING HER) THERE, THERE, HOW FOND YOU ARE OF FINDING MORALS IN THINGS. YOU RE WONDERING WHY I DON T PUT MY ARM ROUND YOUR WAIST. THE REASON IS I M DOUBTFUL ABOUT THE TEMPER OF YOUR FLAMINGO.SHALL I TRY THE EXPERIMENT? HE MIGHT BITE.

5 VERY TRUE. FLAMINGOES AND MUSTARD BOTH BITE. AND THE MORAL OF THAT IS BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER. ONLY MUSTARD ISN T A BIRD. (CHEERING UP) RIGHT, AS USUAL. WHAT A CLEAR WAY YOU HAVE OF PUTTING THINGS. MUSTARD IS A MINERAL, I THINK. OF COURSE, IT IS. (ALMOST BRAGGING) THERE S A LARGE MUSTARD MINE NEAR HERE. AND THE MORAL OF THAT IS THE MORE THERE IS OF MINE, THE LESS THERE IS OF YOURS. I D UNDERSTAND THAT BETTER IF I HAD IT WRITTEN DOWN. (PLEASED WTH HERSELF) THAT S NOTHING TO WHAT I COULD SAY! (THE QUEEN ENTERS) (SHE BREAKS OFF MID-SENTENCE, WEAKLY) A FINE DAY, YOUR MAJESTY. (BOWS) QUEEN-HEARTS: (SHOUTING AND STAMPING HER FEET) I GIVE YOU FAIR WARNING: YOU MUST GET READY FOR YOUR EXECUTION, OR I LL CHOP OFF YOUR HEAD! (DUCHESS LEAVES WEEPING) QUEEN-HEARTS: HAVE YOU SEEN THE MOCK TURTLE YET? I DON T EVEN KNOW WHAT A MOCK TURTLE IS. QUEEN-HEARTS: IT S THE THING MOCK TURTLE SOUP IS MADE FROM. 6 RABBIT: RABBIT: THE KNAVE OF HEARTS HE STOLE THOSE TARTS AND TOOK THEM QUITE AWAY! I HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. CONSIDER YOUR VERDICT. NOT YET, NOT YET. THERE S A GREAT DEAL TO COME BEFORE THAT. QUEEN-HEARTS: IT ISN T RESPECTABLE TO BEG. I MEAN, I M SORRY FOR BRINGING THESE IN. BUT I HADN T QUITE FINISHED MY TEA. QUEEN-HEARTS: WHEN DID YOU BEGIN? FOURTEENTH OF MARCH, I THINK IT WAS. MARCH HARE: IT WAS THE FIFTEENTH. QUEEN- HEARTS: JURY, WRITE THAT DOWN. (JURY MUTTERS) RABBIT: SILENCE IN COURT! QUEEN-HEARTS: WITNESS, TAKE OFF YOUR HAT! IT ISN T MINE. QUEEN-HEARTS: (HISSING) SUSPICIOUS! VERY SUSPICIOUS! SHE SAID AT HOME SHE OFTEN HELPED HERSELF TO TARTS WITHOUT PERMISSION. I THINK THE GIRL SHOULD BE BEHEADED ON PRINCIPLE. RABBIT: (TO JURY) CONSIDER YOUR VERDICT. THERE S MORE EVIDENCE TO COME, YOUR MAJESTY. I VE JUST BEEN HANDED THIS PAPER. IT S A SET OF VERSES. QUEEN-HEARTS: SUSPICIOUS! ARE THEY IN HANDWRITING OF EITHER PRISONER?

7 KNAVE: NOT IN MINE! NOT IN MINE! RABBIT: SHALL I READ IT ANYWAY, YOUR MAJESTY? (GRAVELY) BEGIN AT THE BEGINNING AND GO ON TILL YOU COME TO THE END, THEN STOP! RABBIT: (READS) THEY TOLD ME YOU HAD BEEN TO HER AND MENTIONED ME TO HIM, SHE GAVE ME A GOOD CHARACER BUT SAID I COULD NOT SWIM. THAT S THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF EVIDENCE WE VE HEARD! NOW LET THE JURY PROCEED. IF ANY OF THE JURY CAN EXPLAIN IT, I LL GIVE HIM SIXPENCE. I DON T BELIEVE THERE S AN ATOMOF MEANING IN IT! JURY: (SOFTLY WHILE WRITING NOTES) SHE DOESN T BE LIEVE THERE S AN A TOM OF MEAN INIG IN IT (EXAMINING THE PAPER) I DO SEEM TO SEE SOME MEANING. I SAID I COULD NOT SWIM. YOU CAN S SWIM, CAN YOU? KNAVE: (FORLORNLY) DO I LOOK LIKE I COULD? (TO JURY) YOU HEARD HIM CONFESS! CONSIDER YOUR VERDICT. QUEEN-HEARTS: NO, NO. SENTENCE FIRST, VERDICT LATER. THAT S ILLEGAL! QUEEN-HEARTS: HOLD YOUR TONGUE. (EVERYONE HOLDS THEIR TONGUES) ALICE, I SAID HOLD YOUR TONGUE. I WON T. QUEEN-HEARTS: I SAID HOLD YOUR TONGUE. NOW! I WON T DO IT. QUEEN-HEARTS: OFF WITH HER HEAD! ALL: OFF WITH HER HEAD! RABBIT, HELP ME! DUCHESS, HELP! RABBIT: SHE LOST HER HEAD. STOP! YOU CAN T DO THIS TO ME. I M NOT AFRAID. DO YOU HEAR? YOU RE NOT REAL! YOU RE JUST A PACK OF CARDS! (WAVERING) OH NO, PLEASE--.
