1 1 A CONVERSATION BETWEEN THE LUMP OF CLAY AND THE MASTER POTTER LUMP OF CLAY Ouch! That hurts! Who picked me up? Can I ask what are you re doing? Well...? No, no, I m listening. You tell me. Well, aren t I in your shop? Doesn t that mean that I trust you? Uh but what? I m listening But I did say that I trusted you. So Ouch watch there please. You re uh.. that kinda.. I mean it hurts, the way you are pressing. Uhh, Yes, but you have to take it easy with me. Do you realize that I m very fragile (just between us, I mean, I try to not show it in front of others, but you know everything I guess.)? Oh, you did? So, you were there before I was a lump? And you brought me into your shop... for what? And now, you want to work on me? Well, I m not sure, but here we go!! Ok. Shhh. I m trying. Is this good? Yes, Sir. Wait? I m not used to that. Remember every time you spray water all over me and my buddies and all the other lumps on the shelf and we felt refreshed? Did I ever tell you about my lump friend huh! so socalled friend on the shelf upstairs? MASTER POTTER I m right here, don t worry Sure you can. What would you like to know? Well, this will have to wait. I doubt you will understand now. But I have to ask you: Do you trust me? Not really. But you re right that you re in my shop. Reason being, that I own you. But for now, you re like the rest of the lumps sitting around. But. I really ly don t want you to be just another lump. But this means that I have to change everything about you. I m not sure you trust me though. <busy> Yeah I know. But, trust me; you will be much better when I m done. You do trust me, right? Of course, I do. Ever since I brought you into my shop I knew what you re made out of. As a matter of fact, when I was in my yard, I formed you with my own hands. Yes, I was. Well, for whatever I wish to accomplish when I get ready to.. Up to now you ve been here enjoying everything I have around. Yes, I m ready. Are you? You have to be still. I didn t mean keep your mouth shut. You can talk if you want to. But you have to talk to me because I m the only one who understands you fully. Every now and then I may say something to you too. And when I do, I will help you understand. But you have to be still.... and you need to wait while I m focused focuse in my work. How can I forget? But I m glad you noticed sometimes that it was me who kept you freshened ed up. But now you have to be quiet for a while as I start my work. You can tell me in your own words. But, just so you know, I already know about the other lump.

2 2 Well, she always bragged that she s above me, which means she s better than me. But I will show her one day. I know; you do. But I never liked her. Sometimes I felt even bitter toward her. Nope. Really? (sheepish grin) But why would you want to even touch her? Does she have anything good in her? Oh, I see. Yes? (with regret) I know that, but it makes me feel better when I think I m better than her. By the way, would you do me a favor? Would you put her in that fire over there? But that s what I had in mind, Yes, that last point. It would be so much easier (grin). No, No. Wait a minute. I didn t mean me, as in moi, but her, my neighbor who looks down on me. Well, I hope I make it out alive. That - is - NOT - good news, at all. This is too complicated for me. Wait a minute. Who owns this shop? Do you think it makes any difference to me where the lumps are? And do you know that I know where she is, and she has nothing to brag about. Anyway, her turn is coming. I know what you re thinking. But I want to mold her just likee I m planning to do with you now. Not really. But I do things not because you re good or bad. I look in my heart and decide that I love you enough to do in you what no one else e can. And I can change her just like I am planning to change you.... and one more thing. Please mind your own business. It doesn t do you a bit of good to look at other lumps. Well, it doesn t make any difference that one is better; because what I have in mind for you and for her is what makes all the difference. What s that? Fire is necessary at some point. But my fires are always to confirm in you what I intended for you from the beginning. It s not to destroy. <smiles back>, your turn is coming. And when you re in the fire, that s when you have to hold on to me even if you have to close your eyes tight. I will be right there, very close, looking into the fire, keeping my eyes wide open on you like never before. Hope? Do you know it hurts my feelings when your hope doesn t use the eyes of faith. Listen! In my book, you can t hope for what you re not sure of. And to be sure of it, you have to believe that what I m telling you is true. Not for me! Here, I will help you. Everything that willl happen to you will be based on your trust in me. And you can count on the fact that nothing is going to separate us from one another once I start the work.

3 3 Aww, I love the way you held me, and you brought me close to your face some, and I can see in your eyes that you mean what you say. What knot? That s my head. And I thought the whole time that that knot was what made me unique and so much better than the rest. Ouch! You poked me with th your thumb right on the knot. Nothing? Nada? Nyet? Aww, I love you so much for putting tting it that way. NO way, Jose! I m hanging on! I m not losing anything in this deal. Huh? What about what I m thinking? Whoa!! That was a fast spin, and I m stuck! What happened? I really feel stuck. Now you re getting technical on me. Whoa!! Slip-sliding here. One more question. How long will it take you to be done? And, by the way, this little knot you have over here? Yeah, that knot needs to change some. I will take care of that. That knot was getting in the way actually. So, I may have to change it completely. But again, you will be so much for the better. I know. I m trying to get your attention. You can t have control over anything if I m working with you. Nope. Nothing. Nothing of you. And you will have all of me. You really love me, huh! Let s see how things develop first. You may change your mind when the heat is on. Nope you re not. Just have to give up yourself. I mean, you can t insist on who you are and what YOU want to be if I m going to form you the way I m thinking. Your mind has to yield sometimes to faith. Actually, you can exercise your mind anytime as long as you re being molded ded on the spinning wheel. My hands will always be around you, shaping you, letting you know how much I want to see what I have in mind formed in you. Easy now. Calm down. I m right here. I needed to anchor you onto something so you don t slip out and fly all over the shop, and think you re accomplishing something. Yeah, I know. This is what I call a defining moment. Nothing technical about it. I have to start somewhere. And this is it. My hand is right there, behind you, holding you. We re moving together. I m listening. Oh, that s for me to know, and for you to... uh, well, it s really not important how long, right? I mean, I promised you that I will take good care of you the whole time.. And also, I promise you one more thing.

4 4 What s that? You promise? Well, yes. But last time someone made me a promise (like you know who the closest lump friend I have on the shelf where I lived a while), he didn t live up to his promise when the going got tough. Remembered what? In common? But you re the master potter, and I m nothing but a lump of clay. I don t get all that you re talking about, but I m beginning to feel like I can trust you more. You promise? Yes, I do. May I ask what you re doing? As in? Why are you smiling? See what? Hear what? Do I have a choice in what you re doing? What do you mean? Your hands are very tender as you picked me up The way you look at me is so different,... uh.. Master. (Anxiously) Please be careful. You will be so much better when I m done with you. I just did, right? Well, I know about that. I was watching, and tried to say something, but all you wanted was to be angry at you-know-who. But I am much closer than even a friend. Actually, I really felt very close to you ever since I saw you when I walked into my shop this morning. I laid eyes on you, and felt totally connected to you. So much so, that I remember one day when... uh... Well, just as I walked into my shop, I glanced at my hand and realized I had lots in common with you, more than you think. That s true, but the master potter realized that for him to really re-make make a lump into what he has in mind, he has to get closer, much closer, I mean closer than any other lump around. Good. Good. I want you to close your eyes now, and want you to hold on to me tighter than you ever have, and my promise to you is that you will never fall from my hands while I m reshaping you. you Yes, I do. Do you trust me? Let s start the journey together. Yes, I m doing what no one else can <smiles> Because I really love what I see in you. Don t you see it? I can tell that your eyes need to be washed so you can see. Can you hear everything I m saying? Oh dear! I see your ears need to be reshaped too. Yes, you can choose to stay a lump and be of no good for me! You can choose me to mold you, or you can stay a lump of clay,, and let everyone around wonder about you. I have to be careful so you re not crushed. crushed <Smile>, you can call me Master, and you re right, because I am; but I m really a friend too. You ll see. My scars show how much experience I have in working with clay. Don t you think? Do you know anyone else who does?
