1 Bring the real world into your classroom 16 May 2015 AGE GROUP 6-8 years years years 3 bilingual Alice is 150 years old! This year is the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland and children all around the world will be celebrating the occasion with games and events. On July 4th 1862 Lewis Carroll went for a boat ride with a friend and his young daughters. Carroll described the adventures of a curious little girl named Alice, the same name as one of the children on the boat. The children liked the story so much that they asked Carroll to write it down. In July 1865, Carroll finished writing the book, Alice s Adventures in Wonderland. Alice has many adventures. In the book Alice eats cake that makes her grow very big. She meets a talking rabbit and many more unusual characters. The original illustrations of Alice in Wonderland were in black and white until Since then Alice s famous dress has been red, blue and yellow. You can celebrate Alice s anniversary by reading the book, watching one of the film Alice in a red dress. adaptations or by having a Mad Hatter s Tea Party with fun activities and games! Alice eats a cake and grows very big. Watch a video to learn more

4 Answers and Extension Ideas Warm-up: Show pupils a picture of Alice. Ask them who it is and what her name is in English. Ask if they have read Alice in Wonderland or watched any of the film adaptations. Ask if they can remember any of her adventures or any of the characters that she meets (The Mad Hatter, White rabbit, Queen of Hearts, The Caterpillar, Tweedledee and Tweedledum) and how old they think the book is and the year it was written. Get them to make predictions and give reasons. Write down the predictions. Now read the article and see if anyone guessed correctly. Complete the activities. Say: Now we are going to watch a short video about Alice in Wonderland. What can you see? It s Alice and the Cheshire Cat. Where are they? They are outside standing near some giant mushrooms. Write on the board the sentences below (older children can copy them). While they watch, pupils put them in the correct order that they appear in the video. Stop video at 1:06 seconds. One of the sentences doesn t appear in the video: she eats cake and drinks tea. (7) Alice travels to the Queen of Hearts and plays a game or two. (2) Wonderland is full of strange creatures. (5) and a grinning Cheshire cat. (3) a talking Caterpillar (-) She eats cake and drinks tea (8) but will she be late and go to prison? (6) Together with the creatures of wonderland (4) A Mad Hatter at a tea party. (1) Alice follows a White Rabbit down a rabbit hole...and into wonderland. Answers: 1. Search on Google and show children some images of children s fashion during the Victorian Era ( ). Ask children to make some observations (What did girls wear? What did boys wear? What are some of the differences/ similarities between now and then?) Ask if they would like to wear some of the clothes from that time. Now ask them to imagine they are going to illustrate Alice for a new 2015 version of the book. Ask them to think about: What does Alice look like? Has she got long or short hair? What colour is it? What is she wearing? A dress? Jeans? A school uniform? They can think about extra details. Has she got any accessories or a mobile phone? 4. Draw the 2015 Alice in the box and complete the description. Fast finishers can compare their drawings.
5 Answers and Extension Ideas Extension Ideas: 1. Display the drawings with the written descriptions covered. Invite children to read the description of their drawing and the other children guess which one it is. 2. Read Alice in Wonderland with your class.
