A Streetcar Named Desire Notes: Scene 1 What happens in this scene: Stella and Blanche get re-acquainted after years apart. Characters in this scene: Stanley Stella Eunice Negro Woman Blanche Mitch Steve Pablo
Insight into Stanley and Stella s Marriage Stanley comes home, on the way to bowling, and throws a package of meat from the butcher up to Stella. This action is an innuendo for (suggestive of) their highly sexual relationship. This also depicts Stanley as somewhat primitive (like a caveman) who is bringing home the kill for his woman.
Characterizing Blanche [Her appearance is incongruous to this setting. She is daintily dressed in a white suit with a fluffy bodice, necklace, and earring of pearl, white gloves and hat, looking as if she were arriving at a summer tea or cocktail party in the garden district. She is about five years older than Stella. Her delicate beauty must avoid a strong light] (15). Blanche looks too dignified and clean for this setting. She looks like a rich girl lost in a poor neighborhood. The color white represents cleanliness, purity, and innocence. What would a clean, pure, innocent woman be doing in Elysian Fields? Blanche is older than Stella by five years. Why does the playwright describe Blanche s beauty as delicate that must avoid strong light?
Blanche s first impression of Elysian Fields Blanche is convinced she has the wrong address or is lost. They mustn t have understood what number I wanted (15). This can this be her home (16)?
Characterizing Blanche Alone in Stanley and Stella s flat, Blanche does things that informs the audience about her. [Blanche sits in a chair vary stiffly with her shoulders slightly hunched and her legs pressed close together and her hands tightly clutching her purse as if she were quite cold. (...) A cat screeches. She catches her breath with a startled gesture. Suddenly she notices something in a half-opened closet...and removes a whiskey bottle. She pours a half tumbler of whiskey and tosses it down. She carefully replaces the bottle and washes out the tumbler at the sink.] (18) Blanche is extremely nervous and uncomfortable. She drinks to relax her nerves, but then hides the evidence that she drank
Blanche s Reaction to Seeing Stella BLANCHE: But don t you look at me, Stella, no, no, no, not till later, not till I ve bathed and rested! And turn that light off! Turn that off! I won t be looked at in this merciless glare (19)! Why does Blanche not want to be seen in full light? What is she trying to hide? BLANCHE: I know you must have some liquor in the place! Where could it be, I wonder? [...] Now, don t get worried, your sister hasn t turned into a drunkard (19). Why is Blanche lying about having had a drink already? Why does she feel the need to state that she s not a drunkard?
Blanche turns the focus to Stella BLANCHE: Oh, I m to going to be hypocritical, I m going to be honestly critical about it! Never, never, never in my dreams could I picture Only Poe! Only Mr. Edgar Allan Poe! could do it justice! [...] Why didn t you tell me [...] that you had to live in these conditions (20)! Blanche lets Stella know that she disapproves of her living situation by insulting the neighborhood. Blanche is obviously overdramatic. BLANCHE: You re all I ve got in the world, and you re not glad to see me (20). By saying this, Blanche admits she is lonely and has no one else in her life except Stella. What happened? STELLA: You never did give me a chance to say much, Blanche. So I just got in the habit of being quiet around you (20). Blanche is a domineering older sister; she always takes charge.
Blanche explains why she s visiting BLANCHE: You haven t asked me how I happened to get away from the school before spring term ended. [...] I was so exhausted by all I d been through my nerves broke. I was on the verge of lunacy, almost! So Mr. Graves Mr. Graves is the high school superintendent he suggested I take a leave of absence (21). It is strange that the superintendent personally asked Blanche to take time off. Should her principal have done that? What could have made Blanche feel so stressed?
Blanche turns the focus back to Stella BLANCHE: But you you ve put on some weight, yes, you re just as plump as a little partridge! [...] You just have to watch around the hips a little. [...] You messy child, you, you ve spilt something on the pretty white lace collar! About your hair you ought to have it cut in a feather bob with your dainty features (21-2). By turning the focus onto Stella s weight, Blanche distracts her from further inquiring about Blanche s leave of absence. Blanche also treats Stella like a hopeless child who doesn t know any better. BLANCHE: You know I haven t put on one ounce in ten years, Stella? I weigh what I weighed the summer you left Belle Reve. The summer Dad died and you left us (22). Blanche indirectly insults Stella by flaunting her figure. Why does Blanche have to rub this in Stella s face? It also reveals that Blanche is vain (thinks highly of her looks). Blanche also accuses Stella of abandoning the family without directly saying it.
Blanche s prejudice STELLA: Stanley is Polish, you know. BLANCHE: Oh, yes. They re something like Irish, aren t they? [...] Only not so highbrow (23). Blanche thinks Polish people, like Irish, are low-class. BLANCHE: I brought some nice clothes to meet all your lovely friends in. STELLA: I m afraid you won t think they are lovely. [...] They re a mixed lot, Blanche (23). Stella subtly and gently tells Blanche that Stanley s friends are of different races (not all white men).
Characterizing Blanche BLANCHE: I want to be near you, got to be with somebody, I can t be alone! Because as you must have noticed I m not very well [Her voice drops and her looks is frightened.] (23). Blanche expresses she is lonely and desperate for company. Something happened that forced her to seek out her sister in this low-income neighborhood. What is she so scared of?
