Free Spelling Word Games from Thank you for subscribing to my upcoming Spelling Words Well Newsletter! In each issue, I m planning to include fun, flexible games like the ones here, as well as worksheets, seasonal word puzzles, teaching tips and more. In this packet you ll find these new spelling games. I ve written two sets of word cards for each one. Safari I ve purposely designed a blank game board so that you can use it for just about anything. The game cards I ve included allow kids to practice the spellings of AL/EL/LE words (Set 1) and the spellings of IE/Ei words (Set 2). Players will be hopping back and forth a lot. So it s hard to know who will actually be the first one to the END! Paint Spots Kids will cover spots on these game boards as they add word endings (Game A) and form plural nouns (Game B). Don t forget to laminate the game boards and cards so you can reuse them, both this year and in the future!
Safari Skills: Set 1 al,el,le,ol,ul words Set 2 ie/ei words Number of players: 2-3 Supplies: Printable game board, one set of game cards, answer cards, vehicle game pieces, one standard die Object: Be the first player to reach END. 1. Print game board, game cards, answer cards and vehicles. Laminate if desired. Cut game cards apart. Shuffle and place face down on the table. 2. All players place their vehicle on START. 3. The first player rolls the die and moves forward that number of spaces. 4. She draws a card. If the word is spelled ly, she remains on the space. If the word is not spelled ly, she moves back to where she began that turn. If she can ly spell the word, she moves forward ONE space. Another player double-checks the answer key. 5. Other players continue in the same manner until someone reaches END by rolling a number on the die that takes her into that space or beyond. 6. When a player draws the zebra or elephant card, he moves to that space and remains there until his next turn. Variations: Play with either set of game cards. Or make your own with words from your own spelling lessons. Add another student to the game whose job it is to double-check the answers, if necessary.
Safari Roll again. Move forward that number of spaces. Lost in the jungle! Lose your next turn.
Safari Game cards Set 1 Stay where you are. Move ahead 3 spaces. simple final severel truely bottle generel beautiful happly middel possible material nickle trouble decimel naturel single ankel puddel sandal triangle riddle channel dentle pickel
Safari Game cards Set 2 Stay where you are. Move ahead 3 spaces. acheive believe cieling eight brief chief neither greif receive neice conceit riegn sleigh vien wieght reindeer frieght deceive reciept nieghbor veiw piece yield sieze
Safari Answer keys Here are the spellings of words in each set of game cards. Set 1 simple final severel several truely truly bottle generel general beautiful happly happily middel middle possible material nickle nickel trouble decimel decimal naturel natural single ankel ankle puddel puddle sandal triangle riddle channel dentle dental pickel pickle Set 2 acheive achieve believe cieling ceiling eight brief chief neither greif grief receive neice niece conceit riegn reign sleigh vien vein wieght weight reindeer frieght freight deceive reciept receipt nieghbor neighbor veiw view piece yield sieze seize
Paint Spots Skills: Correctly add word endings or form plurals Players: 3 Objective: Cover up the most squares Supplies: PDF game boards**, pair of standard dice, small squares of paper in two different colors To play: 1. Print out one of the game boards. 1. Players 1 and 2 choose their colored squares of paper. Player 3 is the checker. 2. Player 1 rolls the dice and uses the numbers to locate a square on the grid. For example, if she rolls 4 and 6, she may count over 4 spaces and down 6 spaces or over 6 and down 4. She looks at the word and decides how to spell the new word. If her answer is, she puts a marker of her color on that space. 3. Player 2 rolls the dice and finds a new square and proceeds as described above. 4. If a player rolls a combination on the dice that is not open on the board, his turn is over. 5. The game ends when all the squares are covered. The winner is the player with the most markers on the board. ** Game board A features word endings. Game board B uses plurals. It s easy to make more game boards. Make several more throughout the year featuring troublesome words to give your learners lots of fun spelling practice. Better yet, ask your students to make extra game boards!
