1 Santa s Book of Names by David McPhail Santa s Book of Names is a sweet story about a little boy who wants to learn to read, and he just can t seem to catch on. Throughout the story he learns that sometimes all you need to do is believe! This activity pack focuses on common core reading standards. Created by April Gilbert. 2012

5 The student will. Standards Describe how the main character responds to the events and challenges in a story. Ask and answer questions such as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate an understanding of key details in a text.

6 Characters The characters in a literary text are people or animals. The reader of a story knows the characters because of what the author tells about them.

7 Setting The setting of a story is the time the story happened and the place where the story happened. Sometimes, the setting changes throughout the story.

8 Plot A story has a beginning, middle, and end. The plot is made of the main events of a story, including the problem and solution.

9 Problem The problem is something that happens to the character. It is something that needs to be fixed or solved. 2012

10 Solution The solution is how the character s problem is solved. It usually comes at the end of the story. 2012

27 Sleigh Ride! Board Game Directions Needed: game, dice, counting cubes for each player. 1. Print and laminate the game board and questions cards on cardstock. 2. Give each pair of students or small group a set of game cards, answer card, game board, dice, and game markers (counting cubes work well). 3. Students will shuffle the cards and place them face down in a pile. 4. Students will take turns choosing a card from the pile. If they answer correctly, they will roll the dice. 5. TSW move their game markers to the correct space on the board. 6. The first student to make it to the North Pole circle is the winner.
