Welcome to the March, April Edition of Let s Make Math Fun. As many of you know I love to use games in math and it seems like I am not the only one who does! It is always rewarding to get feedback like my kids cheer when it's time to play them, or These games were a hit with my students. It is wonderful knowing that these games are helping kids to improve their math skills while they enjoy doing math. Of course I have loaded this issue up with more games. Multiplication strategies are featured again with more printable math board games that they can use to practice these strategies. The Bingo games ideas that featured in the last edition were popular but my favorite Bingo game for kids is always Time Bingo. So this edition includes a detailed description of how to play and printable time bingo cards. Give it a go and you will be amazed at how quickly children learn to read the time. There are also number puzzles, a fraction game and my new Match and Flip Addition Puzzles! I hope these get you inspired and give you a few ideas to try with the kids Wishing you lots of fun with these! Till next time, Teresa 2013 Teresa Evans 3

Mastering Multiplication Facts Part 2 In the last edition we looked at strategies for helping children to master multiplication with x2, x10, x5 and x9. We all know that at times teaching children multiplication facts can drive you mad! It is easy to feel frustrated when kids don t develop mastery of these facts like you would expect after much time has been devoted to them. So today we look at different ways to help kids with this. Today we have strategies and games for helping children to master multiplication with x3, x4 and x6. Remember you can use the strategies when children are first learning their basic times tables. These strategies can be an intermediate step between not knowing the facts and developing the instant recall that you would like them the have. Strategies are valuable for many other reasons. The more children use strategies, the more likely they are to recognize when to use them and the more likely they will be to develop their own strategies to help themselves. On the following page there are some basic strategies that you can use to help students to calculate multiplication facts for x3, x4 and x6. After this you will find some printable games for these areas of multiplication Teresa Evans 4

Multiplication Strategies for x3, x4 and x6 If possible, when you introduce students to these strategies have them work out the strategy for themselves rather than telling them the strategy. If you ask students how they might work out the answers to this set of facts, e.g. 6x3, 4x3, and 9x3, they may work out the strategy for themselves or they might suggest a different strategy. x3 and 3x Doubles and One More To multiply by 3, students can double the number they are multiplying and then add one more of these. e.g. 3x7 is double 7, which makes 14. Then add another 7 to this. 14+7=21 x4 and x4 Doubles Doubles To multiply by 4, you double the number and then double this again. e.g. 6x4 is double Then double this double 12 is 24. x6 and 6x 5 Times and One More To multiply by 6 you can multiply by 5 and add one more of these. e.g. 8x6 and 6x8 is 5 times 8 and one more 8 5x8=40 then add one more 8 = 48 The following pages contain 3 printable board games to practice multiplying by 3, 4 and Teresa Evans 5

Tic Tac Toe Multiplication 3 s Facts a game for 2 players Use counters in 2 different colors to play. Take turns to answer a multiplication fact. If you are correct cover the square with a counter. The first player to make 4 in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally, is the winner. Try the Variation: The winner is the first player to make a square of 4 small squares. 3x4 8x3 3x3 3x2 3x3 6x3 3x7 3x9 2x3 3x8 3x5 10 x 3 7x3 3x1 3x9 3x Teresa Evans 6

Multiplication Maker Times 4 a game for 2 players Need: Number Cards Spread the number cards out face down beside the board. Each player takes 5 cards and places them in front of themselves. Players take turns to place a card to complete an equation. If a player can t complete an equation on their turn they return one of their cards to the others and take a new card. The first player to use all 5 of their cards is the winner. x4=4 4x =16 4x =24 x4=36 x4=12 4x =20 4x =28 x4=8 x4=24 4x = Teresa Evans 7

Catch the Monkeys 36 Multiply by 6 72 a game for 2-4 players Need Counters, 2 dice 60 Each player puts a counter on the Start. Players take turns to roll 2 dice and add the numbers together. The player then multiplies this number by 6 and moves to the space with this number, e.g. if a 18 player rolls 5 and 3, the player adds these together 66 to get 8 and multiplies 8 by 6 to make 48. The player then moves to the next space with 48. The first player to reach the monkeys is the winner. The 60 player must roll a total of 7 or 8 to move to the 72 monkeys START Teresa Evans 9

Time Bingo Fun In the last edition we looked at several different ways to use Bingo for math. One popular idea in the last edition was Time Bingo so in this edition I want to expand this idea. This is a game that I have used many times in my classroom. It is great for getting kids to review reading times on an analogue clock and converting this to a digital time. You can either create Bingo cards for the kids or the kids can create their own Bingo cards. A good idea is to use a 3x3 grid. This allows the game to have more than one winner. One winner can be the first to complete a line of 3 across. One can be the first to create a line of 3 down. Another can be the first to create a diagonal line and then of course the ultimate winner will be the first to cover all numbers on their card. For this game, I have children record about 9 times in digital format. I tell them the criteria and let them choose their own times, e.g. I might tell them to write 6 times with :00, :15, :30, or :45 between 2:00 and 7:00. Instead of calling times, show them times on a play clock. They then have to read the time on the clock and cover this time if they have it on their Bingo Card. Printable Time Bingo Cards The following pages contain printable Bingo cards for 3 different Time Bingo games. There are 28 cards in each set. Each set reviews a different set of times for children to read. The times reviewed in each set are as follows. Time Bingo Set 1 - :00 and :30 times. Time Bingo Set 2 - :00, :15, :30 and :45 times. Times between 1:00 and 7:00. Time Bingo Set 3 - :00, :05, :10, :15, :20, :25, :30, :35, :40, :45, :50, :55 Times between 6:00 and 9:00. Using the Printable Time Bingo Cards Print the set required and cut into cards. Give one card to each child. Each child requires counters to cover the times. Show different times on a play clock. Children read the time and then cover it if it is on their card. There can be two winners for each round. The first winner is the first player to cover a row of three. The next winner is the player to cover all 9 of their times Teresa Evans 11

Time Bingo Set A Times with :00 and :30 On a play clock show times with :00 and :30. Keep a record of the times shown. Children cover the times as they are shown. First winner is the player to cover a row of three. Next winner is the player to cover all 9 times on their card. 27 Match and Flip Addition Puzzle Fun This style of puzzle is a fun way to practice basic addition. After children match additions to the answers they are rewarded with a picture they have created if they have matched correctly. The kids love these as they want to see the picture ASAP of course. I recently created a set of Addition Facts Match and Flip Puzzles and wanted to share these with you. There are 2 sets on the following pages. The first one reviews addition of 9. The second one reviews mixed addition facts. To create the puzzles - 1. Print the addition page onto one side of thick paper or cardstock. 2. Print the matching picture onto the other side. Laminate if desired. 3. Cut along the dotted lines of the addition page to cut into cards. 4. Your puzzle is now ready for use. To use the puzzles 1. Lay out all of the cards with the additions and numbers facing up. 2. Line up the addition cards one under the other from 1 to Match the correct answer with each addition. 4. When all of the cards have been matched, flip over each card leaving it in the same place. Flip the cards from side to side not top to bottom. 5. When each card has been flipped you will see the finished picture! Hope the kids enjoy these Addition Puzzles! More Addition Match and Flip Puzzles are available at Teresa Evans 27

Paper Plate Fractions Game This is a fun game for identifying fractions and exploring adding fraction models and equivalence. To prepare the game you will need several paper plates. These will be cut into halves, thirds, quarters, fifths and sixths. Write the fraction on each part, e.g. ½. Alternatively you can use the fraction models on the following pages. Print 3 of each on cardstock and cut into parts. This is a game for 2 players (or more if you have lots of fraction pieces cut out). If playing with a class, the class can be divided into 2 or 4 teams. To Play: Players take turns to roll 2 dice and create a fraction with the numbers on the dice by using the smaller number as the numerator and the larger one as the denominator. For example if a player rolls 5 and 2, the fraction would be 2/5. If a player rolls doubles, e.g. 4 and 4 they take no pieces on this turn. The player then takes this fraction of the cut-outs. For 2/5 a player would take 2 of the fifths pieces. After 4 rolls each, challenge the players to make as many whole circles as possible with no overlapping allowed. For each complete circle they can create, they score 1 point. Repeat this several times. This activity can be a great introduction to addition of fractions and also equivalent fractions. Other Challenges While children are playing with the pieces challenge them to find fractions equivalent to ½ or other fractions. Ask if certain fractions added together would make one whole. Have them give an answer before they check using the fraction pieces. Ask them to suggest different ways to make ¾ or 1 whole using different fractions pieces, e.g. not all quarters or not all thirds Teresa Evans 32

Find Two Numbers Puzzles Often it is the simple things that are the best. I love this simple puzzle that has children look for two numbers in the set that will add to a third number from the set.
