Nagoya International School Parent Guide to Design Design is the fundamental soul of a man-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of a product or service. Steve Jobs Design is one of the eight required subjects of the Middle Years Program. Students are assessed twice a year on all sixteen of the design cycle skills shown in the MYP Design Cycle. Design skills are taught using a project based learning approach with both digital and product design challenges. Students are assessed on their MYP Design Cycle skills based on work shown in their digital design stage documents that are submitted to ManageBac. Written and oral teacher feedback is given on all draft documents uploaded to ManageBac. Completed digital and physical products are evaluated using a mix of peer and client feedback.

Contexts for Design at NIS The Middle Years Program Design Cycle is a process for students to follow when designing solutions to problems but does not mandate specific digital or product creation skills for students to learn. In NIS design classes students learn computational thinking and digital fabrication skills to prepare them for a future increasingly filled with the technologies of artificial intelligence, automation and rapid prototyping. Computational Thinking Digital Fabrication Computational Thinking is a process to formulate problems and express solutions in a way that a human or a machine can implement the solutions. Students use computational thinking skills to break complex problems into simpler ones and create algorithms for their solutions. In digital design students apply their algorithms by writing computer code. Students start with visual programming using Scratch and Alice and learn professional text based Java and Swift programming skills in 10th grade. Digital Fabrication is a method to create products using computers. Students use computer aided design (CAD) software to make computer models of their products which are then used to create the finished product using one of the design lab s 3D printers, laser cutters or a vinyl cutter. Hand and power tools can also be used to make product design prototypes from digitally fabricated parts. Students can use digital fabrication to create new versions of their finished products by modifying their computer models in the design lab or at home.

IB Learner Profile T Shirt Logos 6th Grade Design Projects E-Night Gear The problem: Promote awareness of IB Learner Profile traits by making a t-shirt logo. Complete research on the IB learner profile. Sketch logo design ideas which meet given criteria. Create logos using vector graphics design software. Evaluate the success of their logo using a survey. Use thermal transfer vinyl and a vinyl cutter to make a t-shirt with their logo. The problem: Increase the safety of people at night by creating an electronic textile that uses LED s. Find existing products that increase a person s visibility at night and learn how to program a Codebug. Draw a circuit diagram Sew a circuit using conductive thread and program a CodeBug wearable device Test the effectiveness of the electronic textile to improve the chances of seeing the wearer at night.

3D Printed Device Docks 7th Grade Design Projects Scratch Internet Safety Games The problem: Keep a mobile device safe and charged by creating a dock. Investigate how to create 3D models using the TinkerCad website. Compare the features of commercially available mobile device docks. Create a model that can be successfully fabricated on a 3D printer. Evaluate the 3D printed dock against their specifications. The problem: Teach elementary students about cyber safety by programming an educational video game. Compare existing internet safety educational software and websites. Learn how to program computers using Scratch. Use storyboards to develop video game ideas. Create an educational video game using Scratch programming. Evaluate their video game using user surveys.

Sumo Robots 8th Grade Design Projects Design Movement Clocks The problem: Build and program a robot that can win a sumo robot competition. Complete research on existing Lego Sumo robots. Learn how to program EV3 robots. Use Lego CAD software to develop digital models of the sumo robot ideas. Build and program EV3 robots. Test their completed EV3 robot in a class sumo robot competition. The problem: Keep track of time using designs from the past. Investigate the history of the Art Nouveau, Bauhaus and Memphis design movements. Draw orthographic sketches of their clock design ideas. Use Inkscape vector graphics software to create their clock parts to be cut by the school s laser cutters. Assemble their clock using joining and forming techniques for acrylic and medium density fiberboard.

Animations of Children s Stories 9th Grade Design Projects Eco Home Models The problem: Help elementary students visualize their stories by coding animations. Analyze existing animated movies. Learn how to program computers using Alice. Use storyboards to develop animated movie ideas. Create a movie from an NIS elementary student s story using Alice code. Evaluate their animation using feedback from their client and other NIS elementary students. The problem: Teach about the impact of homes on global warming by creating digital and physical models. Complete research on existing homes with low carbon emissions. Draw floor plans of eco home ideas. Use SketchUp CAD software to make a 3D eco home model. Use laser cut parts to assemble a physical model of their eco home.

Free Educational Software 10th Grade Design Projects Assistive Devices The problem: Help NIS teachers teach their classes by programming custom designed software for them. Learn how to program computers, iphones and ipads using Java and Swift programming languages. Work in a team to create Graphical User Interface mockups. Use version control software to organize the coding of programming team members to complete the project. Use teacher client and student feedback to assess the effectiveness of the team s educational software. The problem: Assist a client in completing a task by creating a custom device. Learn how to use AutoDesk Fusion 360 3D CAD software. Draw orthographic sketches of their assistive device ideas. Build prototypes of their assistive devices using 3D printers, laser cutters and hand tools. Use client usability testing to evaluate their assistive device prototype.

NIS Design Department Vision To teach NIS students the IB design process using inquiry driven project based learning to create both digital and product design solutions through the use of computational thinking and digital fabrication skills.
