What Does a Conservation Officer Do? Campanile Cardinal C Ping Pong Pitch Gallery D E Problem Solving and Software From Monkeys to Turtles: a Journey in the Amazon Gold Pioneer Brooke Dardis Joli Vollers Cyclone Space Mining Jessie Puls Nicole Valenzuela Coding isn't the only thing that we do in IT. Come and learn some of the different IT career options that are available. If you re interested in learning about careers that involve natural resources and the outdoors, this session is for you! Participants will learn about the roles, duties and equipment of a Conservation Officer through interactive activities. Students will work in groups to design, build, and test catapults to launch ping pong balls. They will get first-hand experience with the engineering design process, and learn how engineering clubs on campus such as Cyclone Space Mining Club apply this to their design challenges. Cyclone Space Mining Club will also do a short presentation and panel discussion about their club and robot. Work in small groups on exercises to show different approaches to problem solving using software and technology. Travel-log about the road less traveled I took to become a biologist, scientist, and faculty at ISU
F Designing Mobile Apps G Sustaining the Future 3534 H Science of Soil 2256 I Electrifying Energy J K L Intro to Web Development: Create Your Own Website A Plant's Molecular Raincoat Bugs, soil, water and air...how nature works Rachel McClung NSBE Members Maya Hayslett Addie Van Nimwegen Web Development Club Marna Yandeau- Nelson Bert Swalla Learn the basic process of mobile application design. We'll discuss how to translate features into a user interface, explore how to prototype our ideas, and practice testing our paper prototypes with others. The activity will involve building wind turbines and explaining the importance of researching sustainable energy. Additionally, we will preview engineering careers related to the field of sustainable energy. Why should you care about soil? Do an experiment to learn more about how soil is important for crops and how crops feed the world. Science helps us grow the best crops with the fewest resources. Come learn about different careers in the utility industry, how electricity is produced and transmitted and participate in a fun energy activity! This session provides an introduction to web development. Participants will learn the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and then create their own websites. Students will learn about plant genetics and how plants protect themselves against stress in the environment with a "molecular raincoat." This session will allow participants to engage in short experiments showing interactions between bugs, soil, water, and air, and demonstrations showing how different compounds burn different colors. Participants will also learn how this is applied in science.
M N Think Like a Computer Scientist! Computer/Software Engineering: Spinning Your Own Website Digital Women ECSEL Students Let Digital Women show you to think like a computer scientist! We will be covering jobs in electrical, computer, and software engineering through activities and Raspberry Pis/Arduino boards. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the fundamentals of programming in HTML and CSS and how it affects their daily lives. They will then use what they learn to create their own personal website. (Session 2) 10:40 AM - 11:25 AM Tag Workshop Location A B IT Jobs=Geeks Optional! What Does a Conservation Officer Do? Students will learn to think like an engineer in this session, using everyday supplies such as cardboard, bouillon cubes, sugar cubes, and jello jigglers to explain concepts like materials engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, etc.
C D E F Engineering Civilization 3D Scanning in Industry Bridges, Byways, & Beyond Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers! Aquatic Invasive Species in Iowa Gallery 2210 Pioneer Lauren Schwab Wanti Muchtar Nicole Stinn Kim Bogenschutz Learn about the role of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineers in the world and use that knowledge in an interactive bridge building competition! The strongest, most economical, and visually attractive bridge will be declared the winner! See how 3D scanners are used for prototyping new parts, measurement and evaluating the wear of the part in 3 dimension. Each student in this session will have opportunity to use the 3D scanner on Vermeer parts. In this session you'll hear from a practicing civil engineer and learn about her work with transportation, structures, waste water, and geotechincal engineering. You'll learn about her current projects including designing roads and bridges, overseeing maintenance for an entire county, and managing a staff of nearly 30 employees. You'll also work with a team to design your own tower to see if you've got what it takes to be a civil engineer! Aquatic invasive species have harmful impacts on Iowa s water quality, wildlife, recreation, and economy. Public awareness and action are critical to preventing the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species in Iowa. This presentation will focus on the identification, distribution, and impacts of some aquatic invasive species found in Iowa and how it's being monitored and managed.
G H I J K L Thunderstorms, Tornadoes, and More - Exploring Meteorology Pasta Power Tower Material Advantage Let's Make Biodiesel! Mobile App Development DNA Smoothies Gold American Meteorology Society Tau Beta Pi Eng. Honor Society Material Advantage Club Radhika Rao Danielle Roecker Michael Zeller This presentation gives some basic information about the meteorology field including possible jobs and how to become a meteorologist. This presentation also discusses different types of severe weather and how to stay safe when it hits. Put your physics and design skills to the test! Build the tallest and most structurally sound tower using only marshmallows and spaghetti, before time runs out. Meanwhile, you'll have the chance to meet engineering students from Tau Beta Pi, Iowa State's engineering honor society! See glass shattered and learn about the exciting world of materials science and engineering in this session. We will be using different types of oils that are commonly found in the household (for example: corn, canola, palm oil) and converting them into biodiesel. These biodiesels will then be burnt for observing differences in their flame colors and combustion rates depending on the oil used! Mobile apps are available for almost everything, but have you ever created one yourself? It's not as difficult as you might think! Join us for a hands-on session about mobile app development. Experience seeing and then consuming DNA. In this session students learn the physical and chemical principles of DNA by extracting the molecule from a banana using common household materials and then sampling a smoothie. By extraction DNA from a banana students experience that DNA is in the cells of all the food we consume.
