1 Iowa State University OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Program for Women in Science and Spring 2018 TRLT (Apr 12, 2018) Registration Period: Mar 05, Apr 02, 2018 Conference Type: 9th/10th grade (Session 1) 9:50 AM - 10:35 AM Tag Workshop Location A B Balloon Chair Challenge Civilization Campanile Cardinal C Ping Pong Pitch Gallery D Sustaining the Future Gold SHPE/MAES Lauren Schwab Cyclone Space Mining NSBE Does your team have what it takes to keep someone suspended in the air with just balloons and tape? Learn about the role of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineers in the world and use that knowledge in an interactive bridge building competition! The strongest, most economical, and visually attractive bridge will be declared the winner! Students will work in groups to design, build, and test catapults to launch ping pong balls. They will get first-hand experience with the engineering design process, and learn how engineering clubs on campus such as Cyclone Space Mining Club apply this to their design challenges. Cyclone Space Mining Club will also do a short presentation and panel discussion about their club and robot. The activity will involve building wind turbines and explaining the importance of researching sustainable energy. Additionally, we will preview engineering careers related to the field of sustainable energy.
2 E F Ready, Set, Build! Global Pioneer Jennifer Lillo 3512 Engineers Without Borders G Science of Soil 3534 Maya Hayslett H I J Computational Thinking: Create, Animate and Play Mobile App Development Think Like a Computer Scientist! Computer Science Department Danielle Roecker Digital Women It s the ultimate test of structure, strength and style. Build a bridge that achieves all of the above, and YOU could be the winner of the Battle of the Bridges! In teams of 4-5 people, design and prototype the best bridge with the provided materials in 1.5 hours. The model bridges will then be tested for the greatest support efficiency. Do you have the teamwork mindset to bring your ideas to life? Come see how small projects can make a big difference in communities across the globe! Imagine you're in a different part of the world with limited resources. For this activity, you will have to use your problem solving skills to come up with the best product possible, just like a real engineer. Why should you care about soil? Do an experiment to learn more about how soil is important for crops and how crops feed the world. Science helps us grow the best crops with the fewest resources. We teach the basics of Scratch programming and show students how to create stories games and animation. Mobile apps are available for almost everything, but have you ever created one yourself? It's not as difficult as you might think! Join us for a hands-on session about mobile app development. Let Digital Women show you to think like a computer scientist! We will be covering jobs in electrical, computer, and software engineering through activities and Raspberry Pis/Arduino boards.
3 K L M Bugs, soil, water and air...how nature works Wind Tunnel Lab Tour: Harnessing the Power of Air Electrical : Charge Up Your Artwork with Electricity Bert Swalla Outreach ECSEL Students This session will allow participants to engage in short experiments showing interactions between bugs, soil, water, and air, and demonstrations showing how different compounds burn different colors. Participants will also learn how this is applied in science. Want to learn how engineers and innovators test buildings, cars, planes, before they build them to scale? Come see first hand how people simulate wind to test farm layouts, see air circulation around vehicles, make sure buildings are safe and more. In this hands-on workshop, we will explore the use of Paper Circuits. Participants will learn the basics of circuits. They will then use their knowledge to light up their own artwork with electronics. Gold Rockwell Collins Shakira Stowers Material Advantage Club Courtney Mitra The Raspberry Pi is a credit card sized computer that is capable of doing everything a desk top computer can do. Programming is fun and the coolest thing to know how to do! Join our team as we walk you through a fun learning experience programming and integrating software on a Raspberry Pi. When you re done, you ll be excited to look for other things in your house that you can automate and integrate through computer software. Explore Forestry and Animal Ecology at Iowa State! Briefly learn about these two majors then spend the remainder of the session split between learning skills in each field. The first part will take you outdoors to learn basic tree measurements techniques using tools such as clinometers and DBH tapes. The second part will bring you back indoors to learn about animals, their skeletons and how to put them back together! See glass shattered and learn about the exciting world of materials science and engineering in this session. This session will cover what Clinical Laboratory Scientists do behind the scenes in order to help the doctor diagnose what is going on with their patient including Microbiology, Coagulation, Hematology, Blood Bank and Chemistry. Participants will have a chance to preform blood typing.
