You will be sent a time and more details about the day soon. It s a great opportunity to: Meet the students you will be studying with. Get to know your tutors. Check out the campus you will be studying at so you can find your way on your first day. Take part in an activity related to your course to give you a taste of what s to come when you start in September!

3 If you are about to begin your GCSE exams then we re sending you the biggest, best wishes of good luck! Remember, squeeze in any last minute revision, get a good sleep the night before, eat well to keep your energy levels up and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. Oh, and try not to worry!

4 Frequently asked questions Starting at Boston College is a fun and exciting experience but we get that you may be feeling a bit out of your comfort zone so we asked some of our current students the big questions they had before starting college. Plus, if you submitted a question following our last you will find the answer below. What happens after I apply? You will be invited along for an application review, which is a chance to sit down with us and discuss the course in a little more detail. Don t worry if you don t have your grades at this point. Following your application review we will send you a letter with one of the following: An unconditional offer - if you already have the required grades. A conditional offer - if you are waiting for your exam results. An offer of a guidance session to look at alternative courses. We will help you every step of the way! What if I don t get my grades? Don t panic! The College is open on results day so if you haven t got the grades you expected then come and see us and we will look at your options with you.

5 What if I change my mind about the course I want to do? Come and talk to us as soon as you can. We will do everything we can to make sure you are on a course that is right for you. How do I enrol? In August you will receive a letter inviting you to come and enrol on a specific date and time (this will be after results day). Once you have been in and completed your paperwork you will officially be a Boston College student! What do I bring with me on my first day? When you enrol you will be given a list of items you need to bring on your first day. This will vary from course to course but could be as little as a pen and notebook. When will I get my lesson timetable? You will receive all of this information when you enrol. Do I have to attend all my lessons? Yes! Your attendance will be closely monitored and we are there to help should you have any problems. Will I make friends? This is one of the biggest concerns that new students have but after a few weeks, they have made groups of friends that they can t imagine being without! Before you even enrol on your course you will be invited to an induction day in June where you will meet the other students in your group. That s a good place to start as the people on your course will share your interest in the subject area, so you immediately have something in common. The College also has a busy Student Union who put on events throughout the year so you can meet students from other courses. Do I wear my own clothes or is there a uniform? Some courses require you to wear an industrystyle uniform (these are listed below) but for other courses, you are able to wear your own clothes. Courses that require you to wear a uniform are: Bricklaying, Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical, Engineering, Health and Social Care, Motor Vehicle, Plumbing, and Uniformed Public Services courses require a uniform. These can be purchased from Hazelwood Clothing Company by visiting college.htm If you are taking a Sports course then sports kit can be purchased from Kitlocker by visiting Hair and beauty kits are ordered from LaBeeby. Order forms will be sent to learners with details of how to order in May. Catering uniforms come from Russum s. Details of how to order will be sent to all learners. I have dyslexia - will there be help? Yes, we have a Learner Services team available to you throughout your course, whatever type of support you might need.

6 How do I get to College? There are buses running from most areas please visit the Lincolnshire County Council website for details on how to apply for a bus pass. If you live in a household earning less than 32,000 a year you may be entitled to free transport. Our Learner Services team can give you more information. Car parks and bike sheds are available at our Rochford campus. Is there anywhere to eat on campus? At the College s main campus in Boston, you are spoilt for choice with The Diner and Deli, The Coffee Shop, The Food Court and Lime Restaurant. Within our University Centre building you ll find the Boston University Centre Coffee Shop. Peter Paine Performance Centre is home to The Hatch Café. What is offered in College to help me decide on a career? We have an award winning, FREE Careers, Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) service who are able to help with a wide range of careers related questions. Are there any sports teams I can join? The College has its own football teams that meet for weekly training sessions and are part of local Saturday leagues. There are also lots of sports clubs that are ran by external organisations and take place at Peter Paine Performance Centre, including: Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Jujitsu, Roller Skating, 5-A-Side Football, Badminton, Aerial Fitness Classes, Theatre Group Classes, My Barre Fitness Clubs and Netball. There are a lot more options than at school and the options are more interesting. THE ATMOSPHERE IS A LOT MORE MATURE COMPARED TO SCHOOL. College sets you up to work in the industry. THE APPLICATION PROCESS WAS EASY. THE LECTURERS ARE FROM THE INDUSTRY WHICH MEANS WE RE TAUGHT ABOUT REAL-LIFE WORK AND NOT JUST FROM A BOOK. We are encouraged to enter national competitions which can lead to great employment opportunities. I ve made some really good friends! Everyone is really friendly. I M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT BEING HERE.
