Innovation Partnering Proof-of-Concept Services Advancing Research and Commercial Possibilities The California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology Irvine Prof. Mark Bachman Prof. G.-P. Li, Director UC Irvine November 13, 2013
California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology
Calit2 Mission: Integrate and Deploy Technologies Part of Calit2 s mission is to develop technologies that can be deployed (and eventually commercialized). This means that Calit2 promotes development of solutions, rather than specific inventions. Solutions require a different kind of research research that bring multiple technologies to bear on a problem. University Research + Market Driven Industry = Amazing Opportunities
Calit2 Approach: Collaboration and Partnership Calit2 partners with every school on UCI campus from arts to medicine more than 300 faculty affiliates Research Cross-disciplinary collaborations Funding opportunities Industrial support Multi-disciplinary programs Training programs (e.g., NSF IGERT) Industry internships Education Outreach Industrial partnerships Technology transfer Commercialization Academia Government Community Industry
Calit2: From Atoms to Applications Applications Processes Devices Systems Products Product developers Solution providers Materials Manufacturers Entry point anywhere on value chain.
First class research, partnering with industry
First class innovation, commercial opportunities Tech transfer to industry and startups Nanotube RF transistors Carbon MEMS batteries Cellular microarray chips inxus interactive Physical Computing Technology driven physical therapy Microelectrodes for bionic implants More than 100 companies have partnered with INRF/Calit2 for advanced technology development and tech transfer. Scores of patents from INRF/Calit2 research Many startups from Calit2 research
Example center: ehealth Collaboratory
Collaboration of minds and ideas Dr. Steve Cramer Dr. Laura Mosquerda Dr. David Reinkensmeyer Dr. Susan Charles Dr. Mark Bachman Dr. Jutta Heckhausen Dr. John Longhurst Dr. Jeff Russell Dr. Pai Chou Dr. Hamid Djalilian Dr. GP Li Dr. Michelle Fortier Dr. Zev Kain Dr. Ira Lott
True collaboration
Highly interdisciplinary approach to health Information/comput er sciences Psychology / social behavior Engineering / Physical sciences Medicine/ Nursing Cognitive sciences Neurology, bio sciences
ehealth Example: Bionic and Assistive Technologies Dr. Laura Mosquerda Human assistive devices Sensor system and effector embedded in cap can provide vision assistance for the partially sighted.
ehealth Example: Personal Area Networks Personal area networks (PAN) Wearable sensors, electronics, and telemetry for unobtrusive personal area technology. Dr. Pai Chou Internet Central monitoring computer and wireless transceiver. Low power wireless sensors monitoring body/environment.
ehealth Example: Dance health Dr. Jeff Russell Studying dance biomechanics Understanding how dance injuries are sustained and can be prevented. Using dancers as model systems for movement.
ehealth Example: Transmedia Health Tracking Transmedia Design for Health Digital media, social media gaming, and tangible interaction media designed to provide informative, or engaging experiences to promote healthy lifestyles. Combining hardware, software and media design over multiple platforms including social media. Dr. Michelle Fortier Dr. Susan Charles
ehealth Example: Exergaming Technology and motivation Use of technology to establish and clarify goals, provide goal tracking, remove obstacles, increase social rewards, and make healthy activity more pleasurable. Dr. Jutta Heckhausen
ehealth Example: Human sensing Stability sole integrates sensors and electronics into standard athletic insoles. Devices are easy to use, invisible, and socially acceptable. Dr. Hamid Djalilian Body worn sensors and electronics are an important technology area for TLC technology. Project initiated by Broadcom Foundation and UCI Continuing work for Samueli Institute under contract to ONR.
Innovation Example: Bioflexible electronics Flexible, transparent electronics Medical diagnostics devices Disposable electronics Patterned Electronics electroless can be integrated metal on COP. with microfluidics at very low cost. Microfluidic devices (such as blood testers) do not utilize electronics it is too difficult to integrate
Innovation Example: Polymer interposers High density polymer interposer 3D microelectronic packaging market Redistribution layers for integrated circuits Cross section of thru plating Interposers are typically made from silicon with through via etch Top view of high density interposer made in polymer + copper
Innovation Example: Precision microcomponents High precision metal parts Extremely high precision is possible Medical/surgical devices Aerospace components Precision metal components are typically made by precision machining Electroless assisted electroforming enables mass production of complex microcomponents in metal.
Innovation Example: Consortiums, marketing, analysis Promoting industry partners at MDM trade show Showcased consortium technologies to medical device industry
Innovation Example: Integrated Microdevices MIDAS: Microelectronic Integrated Devices And Systems
Partnering for Innovation CalIT2 s greatest resource is its people and partners. Experience in moving ideas into working proofs of concept and transfer to commercialization. A true incubator of innovation.
