6 THE GAIT-LAB OF THE FUTURE THE MODULAR TREADMILL SYSTEM GRAIL As the total package solution for gait analysis and training, the Gait Real-time Analysis Interactive Lab (GRAIL) employs an instrumented dual-belt treadmill, a motion capture system combined with virtual reality and video cameras. GRAIL provides analysis and therapy in challenging conditions to improve gait, while real-time feedback enables analysis and training during the same session. FUNCTIONAL GAIT ANALYSIS Challenge patients with visual, physical and auditory stimuli while measuring gait behavior, which ultimately provides a functional gait analysis. CONTINUOUS RECORDING All gait parameters, such as kinematics, kinetics and muscle activation, are continuously recorded, improving efficiency and data reliability. 8 THE TOTAL INTEGRATION PLATFORM D-FLOW SUITE The D-Flow software is our inhouse visual programming tool designed for the development of interactive and immersive virtual reality applications. Combine its modules to create complex and interactive VR applications. DEVICE INTEGRATION D-Flow integrates many different hardware devices, ranging from infrared motion capture cameras, 6 Degrees-of-Freedom platforms and dual-belt treadmills to inertia sensors and haptic devices. REAL-TIME FEEDBACK Multi-sensory input devices measure the behavior of the subject, while output devices return motorsensory, visual and auditory feedback. APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT Self-definable feedback strategies through a flexible and extensible application development framework. MODULE COMBINATION Software modules directly control the virtual environments, data streams, or specific hardware devices, such as a treadmill or a motion base. HUMAN BODY MODEL (HBM) The HBM is a computer model of the complete human body, representing a total of 46 kinematic degrees of freedom. It is designed for real-time biomechanical analysis of joint kinematics and kinetics, as well as estimation and visualization of muscle function. REAL-TIME MOVEMENT ANALYSIS HBM is part of our D-Flow Suite, in which the biomechanical information on human movement can be used to provide real-time feedback to patient and therapist. CLINICAL APPLICATION Clinicians, researchers and therapists directly benefit from real-time and offline motion insights and information on internal forces of otherwise fundamentally invisible moments. SCIENTIFIC BASIS HBM was developed in collaboration with Prof. van den Bogert, based on the findings he first published in 2013: A real-time system for biomechanical analysis of human movement and muscle function. 9 MEETING THE FIELD VU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER AMSTERDAM VUmc is a university medical center, closely associated with the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). One of the university s research institutes is MOVE, which emphasizes on human movement research. Its mission is to conduct excellent scientific research on human movement and the human movement system within the fields of rehabilitation regenerative medicine and sports, in both healthy individuals and patients. The long-term aim is to conduct innovative, surprising and fundamental research to understand, improve, maintain and/or repair motor functioning. To this end, MOVE uses a state-of-the-art virtual reality lab equipped with the GRAIL. It allows the faculty to integrate mechanical perturbations and real-time feedback on movement parameters in a virtual reality environment. This benefits the researchers, providing extra flexibility in research protocols and analyzing results. Since I have a dual-belt 3D instrumented treadmill, we can measure hundreds of gait cycles, under various conditions, within a few minutes. Prof. Dr. Jaap van Dieën VU University Faculty of Human Movement Sciences Amsterdam MOTEK 2017 CLEVELAND CLINIC Cleveland Clinic is a nonprofit multispecialty academic medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. The founders of the clinic believed in the strength of diverse specialists working and thinking as a unit, with a core mission: Better care of the sick, investigation into their problems and further education of those who serve. The clinic strives to be the world's leader in patient experience, clinical outcomes, research and education and is recognized by many independent organizations for the quality of care it provides. Cleveland Clinic uses two virtual reality-capable treadmill systems for rehabilitation, clinical analysis and research: the Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) and C-Mill treadmill system. The systems are used to assess, train and study rehabilitation patients mobility in realistic but protected settings. Beyond the virtual immersion features, the systems provide them with a complete biomechanics laboratory in a quarter of the size of a traditional lab. The CAREN system puts us on the leading edge by enabling us to safely challenge patients through different courses in an immersive, realistic virtual environment.
