Health and Fitness Character Connection Presented By: Alicia Fitness #1 Since character development should extend into every part of a boy s life, so should character development extend into every part of Cub Scouting. We should be striving to use the core values throughout the whole program. Remember the steps when teaching the core values. Knowledge, commitment and practice are the three basic steps in teaching the core values. The goals of a Cub Scout leader are to seek out and maximize the many opportunities to incorporate character development and to convince the young Cub Scout that character is important to the individual, to his family, community, country and world. This month s core value is aimed and being personally committed to care for our minds and bodies. Some ideas are go on an exercise hike with stations to do specific exercises, maybe go to the local elementary school and use their playground to set up different exercises. Discuss how eating right relates to the health of an individual. Plant and harvest an edible crop. Have a campfire program around this theme, opening ceremonies, songs with physical movements, skits and closing ceremonies all using health and fitness themes. Attend a sporting event. Have a cookout and have the boys plan a healthy meal. Building Den Spirit There are many ways to build den spirit. The first thing you need to remember is your attitude will ultimately rub off on the boys. If you don t seem to be excited about something the boys won t be either. Here are some ideas: Skits/Run-Ons Songs the sillier the better Jokes there are always some good ones in Boy s Life Games helps get the wiggles out Let them help plan the activities Cheers/Applauses remember to follow the guidelines Participation Stories Pre-Openers
Destination Parks This is one of many different patches that the boys are able to earn in our area. In looking at the requirements for this patch, most of them are completed while working on the different pins for Webeloes. For a complete list go to and search cub scout patches. HOMETOWN DISCOVERY PATCH This patch allows Cub Scouts to learn more about the neighborhoods in which they live. Boys may earn this patch with their den, pack, or family by fulfilling six of the following eight requirements: 1. List some of the businesses in your community and tell what kind of work or service they do. 2. Learn about a local celebration or community event and attend one. 3. Visit a library or bookmobile in your community and check out a book that interests you. 4. Talk to someone about the history of your community or about an important local tradition. 5. With your den, pack or family plan and implement a service project to make your community a safer or cleaner place. 6. Learn the name and position of a government leader in your community. 7. Identify a safe house in your community. This could be a McGruff House or a home chosen by your family as a safe house where you could go if you were in need of a safe place. 8. Locate official emergency services in your community. Learn how you can contact them.
Requirement #9 Ideas ARTIST Presented By: Debby Toilet Paper Roll Race Car Supplies: Empty Toilet Paper Roll for each boy Card Stock for tires and steering wheel Small Brass Fasteners Markers X-acto Knife (For leader use only) Paint Scissors Leader Prep: Paint the toilet paper rolls a base color. Punch 4 holes in role for tires centered and across from each other. Using X-acto knife, cut an H in the top, center of the tube about 1 wide and 1 3/4 long. The cross bar of the H should NOT be centered but about 1 down from the top (top faces front of car) of the H. With Boys: Fold the front H tab down like dash board and the back H tab up like a roll bar/back of seat. Decorate tube to look like a race car. Cut 4-2 circles from cardstock and punch hole in center of each one to fit brad. Attach each wheel with the brads. Cut a 3/4 circle from cardstock. Use markers to make it look like a steering wheel and then glue to front tab. Chip Can Monster Faces (see below) 5
Chip Can Referee There are two sizes of chip cans: (S) 8 tall and (T) 9 3/4 tall. Follow the directions for the size cans you have. Supplies for one Referee: White paper rectangle: (S) 6 1/2 x10 (T) 7 1/2 x10 Flesh colored rectangle: (S,T) 2 x10 1 black strip: 1/2 x10 for belt 10 black strips: 1/2 x3 1/8 for shirt 1 set of hands printed on cardstock 1 pipe cleaner (can use the regular thickness but I like the thicker ones that look more like arms) Hair color rectangle: (S,T) 2 x10 Black paper scraps to make shoes Black marker Pencil Glue sticks Directions: Leader Prep Clean crumbs out of can. Wrap white paper around lower portion of can and glue in place. Draw a light pencil line around can 1 7/8 down from top of can. (Measure down, make a mark, then use a piece of paper wrapped around the can lined up with the mark as a guide to draw line. You may want to measure down on both sides to make sure your line is straight.) Arm Holes: Punch hole in side of can 2 3/4 down from top of can just big enough to fi t the pipe cleaner through the hole. Punch another hole straight across the can from the fi rst one. ( I suggest centering the seam of your white paper between the two holes so the seam will be at the back of the referee.) With Boys: Glue 3 1/8 long black shirt strips vertically to body. Line the top of the strip up with the pencil line to help make all the strips even. To make them evenly spaced, lay one of the other black strips along side the one glued as a guide to glue the next strip on. Push the pipe cleaner through the holes. You may need to punch the hole through the black strips. Center the pipe cleaner so the arms are the same length. By doing arms fi rst you can make sure your face is centered and not looking off to the side. Punch a small hole through the center heal of both hands. Push pipe cleaner through hole about 1/2 from front to back of hand, then fold end of pipe cleaner up against rest of pipe cleaner. Do the same with the other hand on the other side of the pipe cleaner. Wrap fl esh colored rectangle around top of can, covering the tops of the black stripes and glue in place. Glue the black belt strip around the bottom of the vertical stripes to hide ends. Cut a curve out of the center of the hair strip approximately 4 across. Glue around top of can, centering between arm holes for face space. Draw a face on your face space. Cut out 2 half ovals from the scrap black paper for shoes and glue them to the bottom front part of the can for shoes. Draw a vertical line to separate the legs centered front and ends between the shoes to help it look like pants and not a dress.
Chip Can Monster Version Place armholes in same place as the referee directions. Make sure you have a lid for each can to put hair on. Cover the can from top to bottom rim in a colored construction paper. Add arms and hands as instructed in the referee instructions. You can print the hands on colored paper instead of white like you would use for a referee. By doing arms first, you can make sure your face is centered and he isn t looking off to the side. Let the boys decorate the can with eyes, mouth, nose, eye brows, spots, stripes, zig zags, pointy teeth, pom-poms, stickers, etc. Let their imaginations run wild. Use yarn to make some hair to tape to the top of the lid. I used a piece of cardboard 2 x5 and wrapped 3 different colors of yarn around it many times. I then tied them all together at the bottom of the piece of cardboard and then cut them all off at the top of the cardboard. I then taped the hair to the lid for a fluffy hairdo. The boys can be very creative and you can use your monsters to practice referee signs instead of the referee. You could then lead into another requirement for sportsman and talk about how we don t want to be monsters when we play games, we want to use good sportsmanship! Optional Mouth tuck under and glue fingers and thumb folded down flap Puppet Mouth Option (see below) fold over and glue
Sock Puppet also signs off Showman #3 Supplies: Old Socks Felt Floral Wire (or something similar) Craft Glue (optional tie-die) Leader Prep: If you want to tie-die socks, do them a few days ahead to have time for ink to set and socks to dry completely. Cut eye pieces from felt 1 white circles 1/2-3/4 black circles 1 3/4 arch pieces for back of eyes Wire pieces cut that arch like illustration for eyes and ears With Boys: Decide if you are going to use the outside of the sock or the inside. The inside makes the puppet look furry. If using the inside of the sock, turn sock inside out - heal up. Glue black eye circle to center of white eye circle. Lay arched wire on top of arch piece as shown. Glue assembled eye piece to arch on top of wire as shown. Let dry. When dry, fold back the lower half of felt and wire at a 90 degree angle and glue both eyes next to each other onto puppet. They only need to be about 3 1/2 from toe of sock to look good. Cut an oval for the mouth about 2 1/2 x 3/4. Fold long way. Have the boys put their hand in the sock and tuck in a piece of sock on the stitched toe line. Glue the oval into this tucked space. Tack the corners of the mouth with glue to help hold mouth together. If the boys want ears, do the same with ears as they did with eyes, letting the boys cut out the ear shapes they want and gluing right behind eyes. Decorate with spots, nose, eye lashes, spines or wings. (Wings take wire to make them stand out) I like to tuck a little batting into the nose of the puppet to give it form and structure, but is not necessary. Optional Mouth (done by leader ahead of time): Put hand in sock, heal up. Form hand with fingers straight across and thumb underneath fingers to form the mouth. Cut an arch between fingers and thumb. Lay open arch and trace oval shape onto cardstock. (With an adult sock, the oval with be approximately 2 3/4 x5 1/2.) Cut the cardstock a little smaller than the hole, fold in half, then open up again. Cut out a piece of mouth colored felt the same size as the oval. Eye Assembly Fold Line 90 degree angle Ear Assembly Fold Line 90 degree angle Glue felt to cardstock so when folded, felt will be on the inside. While glue is still wet, fold mouth in half and let dry. Open up mouth and place top half of mouth piece inside puppet, aligning with mouth hole and bottom of mouth piece outside hole. Glue in place around edge of mouth, folding lower part of mouth over mouth piece edge. Glue upper edge of sock mouth hole onto upper half of mouth oval. Let dry.
Requirement #8 Mobile s Supplies: Metal ring - 3 or 5 Fishing Line Ruler Colored Cardstock Pencils Crayons or Markers String Scissors Directions: Version 1: Scout Law Cut 13 of desired shapes (circles, stars etc.) out of cardstock. Write each of the scout law pieces on one of the shapes. Cut 13 lengths of fishing line, starting with a 5 piece and making each consecutive piece 1-1 1/2 longer than the last. Tie a small knot in the bottom of each piece of line. Tape them to the points of the law in order by length. Tie them around the circle in order so the law spirals around the ring. Version 2: Mother s Day Present A Scout Is... Trustworthy and Reverent Cut 9 shapes (flowers, hearts etc.) out of pastel colored cardstock Write I love my Mom because on one and why the boy loves his mom on the other 8. Cut 9 lengths of fishing line at different lengths. Tie a small knot in the bottom of each piece of line. Tape one to each shape. Hang from ring evenly spaced, not worrying too much about the order of lengths. Version 3: Origami Do the same as above but hang Origami animals from the fishing line. Origami for Kids Websites: Version 4: Wind Chime Style Hang medal Juice can lids from string. Have boys paint pictures on lids to decorate. All Versions: Tie two pieces of string long in an X pattern from the top of the ring to hang mobile from. Thrifty Loyal Cheerful Brave Helpful Obedient Clean Friendly Kind Courteous
