Message form the Editor Welcome again to our quarterly newsletter! With the festive holidays yet again lumped together before the end of last year, and a major personal event happening in my own life, I must humbly apologise for the extreme delay of our 3rd Quarterly Newsletter. Also, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my Muslim brothers and sisters, Selamat Hari Raya Qurban and to my Christian friends a very Merry Christmas. I hope the long Holiday from the end of last year, to the beginning of this year has brought all of you much peace, love and happiness amongst loved ones and family, of course not forgetting a lot of rest and relaxation, in preparation for the new year of This newsletter will be a brief update of what was planned and carried out for October to December of Please note that the committee is busy preparing for our 2nd National Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exhibition which will be held 10-11th April, Look out for the registration brochures and please contribute where you can. As a relatively newly formed association, we will need as much assistance as possible. MIHA s 2nd National Industrial Hygiene Conference As per mentioned above, the MIHA Conference Committee and administrative staff is busy putting together its 2nd National IH Conference which will be bigger and better than the maiden seminar, held May of This time, we have in store international as well as local speakers, amongst which is Dr Renshaw, the current AIHA s President Elect during the main Plenary Session, the renowned Prof K.G. Rampal for the 2nd morning s Plenary Session, and technical session speakers from DOSH, NIOSH, SOEM, UPM, UKM, PETRONAS, ExxonMobil, 3M and lots more! We are expecting approximately 300 participants, 20 exhibitors and for you to be amongst them! So hurry and register, do not wait till the very last minute!

2 Page 2 Indoor Air Quality Assessor Course Date/Venue: 27th November 1st December 2006, Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur After a task force diligently worked on the course content, MIHA, although delayed with apologies, successfully ran its first much awaited 5-day IAQ Assessor Course. The course was attended by 19 participants and included four full-days of classroom sessions, including group-work case studies, and a 1-day practical hands-on session, with participants handling IAQ toys such as total volatile organic compound, carbon monoxide/dioxide, formaldehyde, dust and air velocity/humidity monitors, on location. Participants also witnessed fungi/mold and bacteria samples taken outside the location entrance, within the building as well as the AHU (participants now know what this stands for, do you?). Seeing as how the Indoor Air Quality Code of Practice was only launched in July 2005, there is much concern on the air quality in buildings, public transportation, hotels and places of entertainment. If you have not yet assessed your workplace, now is the time to do so. If you missed the course, do not panic, MIHA is planning to hold two more in So keep your eyes open for the brochure! Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene (FIH) Course MIHA Executive s MIHA s 1st Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene 5-day course was successfully conducted from 6-10th November at Corus Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. The course was conducted by our very own in-house expertise consisting of MIHA s President, Zainal Mubarik, VP Wan Sabrina Wan Mohamad, Honorary Treasurer GT Lim, Marina Zainal Farid and Rina Cheong Ronaldin. The course was co-sponsored by Malaysia s Social Security Organization (SOCSO) and approved by the Malaysian Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). It also carried with it continuing education points for Occupational Health Doctors, Assessors and Hygiene Technicians. For those that missed it, MIHA is planning on improving the course content based on the feedback given from attendees and run the course again early-mid June So look out for the announcement and early bird specials!! ANNOUNCEMENTS Our diligent MIHA executives are currently on maternity leave (CONGRATULATIONS Kebi and Baiti!). With this, and the heavy duties pertaining to the upcoming National Industrial Hygiene Conference and Exhibition in April, the committee has decided to employ two executives on a contract basis. Azrul and Kay have been employed since January 2007 to assist the committee on administration matters, memberships and promotion amongst various other administration functions as needed. Heading to Philadelphia? Are any of you heading to Philadelphia for the American Industrial Hygiene Conference and Expo (AIHCE) this June, 2007?
