It was interesting to hear about policing in the Ryde area. I have included a photo this week of Patrick Longfield and my visit to James Ruse to present the cheque we gave them for assisting us at Xmas wrapping at Top Ryde shopping centre. Last weekend 20 of our Rotarians attended this year s 9685 Conference. We started out early at 8am at Penrith Panthers and finished the day's proceedings at 5pm. The day was packed with speakers talking about the future in Rotary. When the day was finished most travelled home but a few of us stayed on to enjoy the festivities and boy did we have fun. With free drinks and food from 5.30 till 7 was a great start to the night. But the entertainment didn't stop there, we were rocking the night away with Normie Rowe and the Playboys and he hasn't lost his voice. Even Rachael and Alan who didn't know him were mightily impressed. Your President thoroughly enjoyed this night and woke up the next morning with no voice from singing so much. Don t worry it will return. This week we welcome Bob Selinger who will be with us to tell us about his Favourite convict. Sounds like for the last two weeks we have been talking about crime.

6 LAST WEEK AS RECALLED BY RACHAEL INGS 6 Of all the evenings which Ryde Rotarians chose to act out with inappropriate banter and noise, it was of course the night which we had invited two local policemen to attend. Perhaps this two-sip toast standard is a little much to handle? President Julie Thorp invited Rotarians, and guests: Toni Maclean, Simen Øie, Kieran Joel, Inspector Michael Dawson and Sergeant Greg Hunt. Julie read out the birthdays and anniversaries for the week. And it seems that many celebrations are to be had among Ryde Rotarians, with a wedding anniversary and no less than four 21st birthdays. A German inspired purple vegetable, fried meat and smashed potato dish was served as fellowship was enjoyed. PE John Brown was invited to the floor to give his five minute talk. John was born in country town Port Pirie in a State which so many of our cherished Rotarians and partners come from. John worked for the Commonwealth Railway line until the age of 21. In 1978, John moved to Adelaide and bought a newsagency, and within 12 months, had purchased a second store. After 8 years of working at the newsagency, John took on the role of supervisor for a friend s building company and worked in this role for over 12 years. It was then that he began practicing for the Olympic diving team sans-pool, nose diving off a roof and spending quite a few months off of work. Itching to get back into work, John began working for Rossdale homes. When he had arrived, the company was producing 250 homes per year and when he left, the number had risen to 600. Eight years on, John is semi-retired and happily living in the big smoke. Julie informed everyone that in two weeks time, it will be St Patricks Night, which is two weeks to prepare a Simen-appropriate joke and purchase a green outfit. Julie then recited the letter that she had received from North Ryde Community Aid for the Tree of Joy, notably thanking PP Bob Carroll for his outstanding commitment to the cause; the room echoed in applause. Julie visited James Ruse Interact Club on Monday to present them with an $800 cheque from gift wrapping, which they will be able to put towards Westmead Hospital s Bandaged Bear appeal.

7 LAST WEEK AS RECALLED BY RACHAEL INGS 7 In the absence of our environmental warrior, PP Patrick Longfield, PP Duncan Taylor updated everyone on the success of the eye-opening Clean Up Australia Day event at Putney Park. Let s just say that Duncan was impressed with the resourcefulness of teenagers, and didn t hold back in explaining what had been collected during the clean-up. Simen had another good weekend, with guitar, ceroc, archery and Kieran s 12th birthday party. PP Adrian Hallett invited everyone to the ANZAC service on Monday 24th April, to be led by PP Ken Allen, and promoted the start of Bowel Care from April 1st. PP Geoff Brennan announced that thanks to Ryde Rotary Club, District 9685, Rotary International and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, our $2650 contribution has been turned into over $19,000 as part of an almighty effort by Rotary to eradicate poliovirus by PDG John Dodd highlighted how our dedicated Ryde Days for Girls team leaders, Janelle Dodd and Dennise Herrick, have been busy; firstly at the North Rocks Rotary Club to receive a $3000 donation, and secondly for Janelle at Ravenswood School for Girls. Next week, the group of school girls learning to make kits will grow from 25 to 100! For the second week in a row, the person drawing the spackle claimed victory. With such hot competition for the large pot of gold, I m calling shotgun for next week Serj! Geoff then fined the Serj. for his use of the bell, and the Serj cross-fined Geoff back. Ken then welcomed our honourable guest speaker, Inspector Michael Dawson, to the front of the room. After more than 40 years in the Force (Police, not Jedi) from Broken Hill to Kings Cross, Inspector Dawson has certainly seen it all. From his talk, I ve learnt that people do still use snail mail (and steal it occasionally), people s counterfeit note of choice is the $50 bill, and if you receive an urgent notice to pay someone back in $9000 worth of JB Hi-Fi vouchers, then it s probably a scam. Michael then returned to his seat to take a-rest as Julie closed the meeting with her thought for the week: police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, and the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off. Let s hope the jokes are of this high standard in a fortnight!

Last week, Simen s talk ran overtime, using up precious fining time. Best to not mess with the Serj s fine session time allocation! We missed you this past month, Ken It seems that February flew by quicker than everyone realised. Julie forgot to welcome back Ken, who had been away cruising for four weeks. Bill didn t avoid a cross-fine from Ken either though, for welcoming Ken back after one week away rather than the four he was absent!
