1 Service Above Self THE SILVER SAGE BULLETIN OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF SILVER CITY Helen Shoup, Editor November 14, 2015 Check out our Website Visit & Like us on Facebook Officers and Directors President: President-Elect: Secretary/Treasurer: Immediate Past President: Club Service: Community Service: International Service: New Generations: Vocational Service: Sgt-at-Arms: Senior Advisor: Joe Heidrick Peter Herzberg Linda Telaak Suzanne Kavanagh Anita Larson Kathy Eaton Peter Herzberg Francisca Reyes Wendy Spurgeon Jim Tindall Peter Falley Schedule: Future Meetings, Service Projects, and Special Events Date/2017 What s Happening Tuesday, November 21 12:00 pm: Mattie Eagle Grant County Community Foundation 1:15 pm: Club Board Meeting Tuesday, November 28 12:00 pm: Judge Tim Aldridge Meeting Notes President Joe Heidrick rang the bell at 12:11 pm, and we socialized for a few minutes before the meeting began. Rosie Higgs led the Pledge of Allegiance, Tom Bates gave the Invocation, and Nkechi Nwachuku led the Four-Way Test.
2 Visiting Rotarian Honorary Rotarian Bill Harrison was here today. Guests Wendy Spurgeon introduced Chris Wellman. Kathy Eaton introduced her daughter-in-law Tanya Creasser from Chicago. Rotary Announcements Joe Heidrick announced o The beneficiaries from this year's Auction will be presented with checks on Tuesday, November 28, o Kathy Eaton's winning Team from the Auction will meet at Little Toad Creek tonight, and the club will buy them drinks! Everyone is invited to attend. o The Volunteer Hours sheet was circulated. o Rotary's Christmas party will be at Bear Mountain Lodge on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at 6:30 pm for appetizers and 7:00 pm for dinner. The cost is $35.00, and the signup sheet was circulated. o The End Polio Now Reception was a success, raising $2, A special thank you to Maggie Veeder for setting up the location for the event! o The Foundation Board meeting will be right after the regular meeting. Kathy Eaton thanked everyone who participated in the Trunk or Treat to make it such a success.
3 Non-Rotary Announcements Wendy Spurgeon told the club: The play "Don't Drink the Water" will be playing this weekend at the old Elk's Lodge. Thursday night at the old Elks Lodge, SASS will be holding a fundraiser and auction; it will cost $35 per ticket. Happy Dollars Sunny Kellerman passed around an article that was in the Independent previously about William Knuttinen's Escape Room. William Knuttinen went to the Big Island of Hawaii, and his dad donated his timeshare to him. He also volunteered about 3 hours to a timeshare talk to learn about what could be done with a timeshare. He is also happy to share that the Escape Room is open again. Program Sunny Kellerman discussed the Rotary Foundation, showing a short video, discussing the 6 areas of service, talking about grants, updating. It was inspiring! Rotary appreciates the members and invites members to support the Foundation. It made one feel proud to be a Rotarian! The Rotary Foundation's work is primarily in 3 areas: Polio Eradication, International Understanding through Rotary Peace Centers and Peace Fellowships, and grants for international and community projects. Half of the money contributed to the Rotary Foundation comes back to the districts and clubs for community projects. Under new regulations, clubs can now also use some of that money for international projects. Our club has benefited during the last 2 years through grants for the School Gardens Project last year and Volunteer Center's water catchment project this year. We have also contributed significantly to the effort to End Polio through money raised at our annual End Polio receptions. For example, last year we contributed $3,500 and this year $2,500. One way to make your contribution to the Annual Fund is by purchasing or selling Cruise Raffle tickets. Tickets are now available, and she and Linda Telaak are distributing books of 10 each to every member of the club. Each ticket is $10. The Rotary Foundation is recognized as one of the 10 most effective and efficient non-profit organizations world-wide. Raffle Kate Watson won the Raffle of $25.00 (again). Attendance We had 23 of 33 active members in attendance, or 70%.
