Grace is certainly an asset to our club. This week I visited Ryde Secondary and Hunters Hill High for their Presentation Days. It was my honour to present the Junior Science Award to Huon Kirkman at Hunters Hill High. At Ryde Secondary I presented four Excellence Awards from Macquarie University to Levent Dilsiz, University of New South Wales to Dennis Kim, University of Sydney to Tharini Yahampath and Western Sydney University to Zhilin Choo. This week is our AGM. As per our new constitution of having nominations in the week before the meeting we now know that we have two nominations for President. The two nominees are in alphabetical order: Kathryn Dodd Nora Etmekdjian This will mean we will have an election so please attend the meeting. All other board positions have only one nomination. We have started Xmas gift wrapping at Top Ryde Shopping centre and we have received absolutely wonderful support from our James Ruse Interactors and when I visit at the beginning of the year I will let them know how much we appreciate their fantastic support. David James has put great effort into organising the project and I take this opportunity to thank him. President Julie

4 LAST WEEK AS RECALLED BY RACHAEL INGS 4 On a warm December night, less than twenty days until Christmas, Rotarians gathered along with guests Simen Øie and Kieran Joel. Saving the need to have the same conversation 49 times, PDG John Dodd was called to the front to update everyone on James Dodd s surgery. James, who has been recovering well from his operation, is both grateful for the messages of support and successfully two inches taller! President Julie Thorp asked everyone to join in fellowship before inviting PP Kalma McLellan to the stage. Kalma highlighted how PDG Les Whitcroft s family were grateful for the timing of the naming of the park in Les name. It was then PP Ken Allen s turn to give his vocational talk. After completing school, Ken s mother told him I want you to have a job by Monday, you eat like a horse. Well, Ken did just that. He had an interview on the Friday before with Elder Smith wall broking firm and started on Monday. He began in the mail room but didn t spend long there, moving to the accounts department in a matter of months. Once Ken received a NSW clearance, he was offered work within NSW Police. Not one to be repetitive, Ken began working in the mailroom before being promoted to the accounts department after three months. Ken was then offered a teachers college scholarship and moved to rural NSW teaching primary school students. He spent some years moving between the city and the country before settling into a position as a clergy man around the Tamworth region for 25 years. Ken told everyone in the room, I love what I do, people are appreciative of what I do so why would I do anything else, as he spoke of his current work looking after a parish of 2000 in Sydney.

5 LAST WEEK AS RECALLED BY RACHAEL INGS 5 Simen spent some time getting lost and some time orienteering last week, pulling off a fantastic 2nd in the under 21s. Thankfully, our young exchange student is made of tough Norwegian-winter skin, surviving a tick on his neck overnight. Simen then enjoyed a dinner with Ron Taffa on Friday night and a visit to the city with exchange students on Saturday. PP Geoff Brennan highlighted the District Conference next March and promoted the Rotary Foundation bank note, enticing the crowd with the fact that inflation never touches it, it s invalueless. Kathryn Dodd encouraged everyone to purchase Days for Girls Christmas cards and Ryde eclub Chairman, David James, reminded everyone of the gift wrapping. Christmas isn t far away now! John Tesla Dodd won the spackle and took home a white wine. Our Serjeant-atArms, David Johnston, fined Stefan Sojka for trying to match PP Allen Horrell and Ken was fined for having knowledge across many professions. Geoff and PP Patrick Longfield were fined for not just wearing similar shirts, but also similar badges. I wonder who tried to match whom? Kathryn then cross-fined PP John Higgins for misplacing his badge, which was later, located on his shirt. PE John Brown introduced our guest Rotarian speaker, Grace Moyo, on the topic of medical monitoring. The fact that even a small pandemic can have the same effect as a war or natural disaster is fundamentally why global health matters cannot be discarded. Global Health Me (GHMe) began in January 2015 as a pilot program for allowing mentorship to be more visible in the public health sector and for allowing students and youth professionals (SYP) to be supported by experts in their field. Grace joined in early 2016 as a program developer and when applications opened for the year in April 2016, there was 2.5 times more mentors and SYP than the previous year. And thanks to a donation from the Rotary Club of Ryde, learning platform Learning Stone was able to be established. It s incredible to know what success can result from a small donation. Julie ended the meeting with her thought for the week: change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

6 CHRISTMAS GIFT WRAPPING 6 Christmas Gift Wrapping has begun, and will be continuing right up until Christmas Eve. We get busier toward Christmas, as would be expected. If you have the time, help out! We'll have the assistance of students from James Ruse, one or two from Marsden High and a few others. There are still wrapping/supervisor shifts available and Julie will hand around the roster sheet on Tuesday, so please fill in your name. Start of the day is 10am and we finish by 9pm on all days (except Christmas Eve 6pm). Shifts are 3 hours. Location is Top Ryde Shopping Centre, LG1. DAYS FOR GIRLS CHRISTMAS CARDS The Ryde Days for Girls team is selling Christmas gift cards to spread goodwill and raise some extra funds towards the fantastic Days for Girls cause. Standard Cards come in a wide variety of traditional and modern styles and can be bought in packs of 10. Each pack of cards will contribute towards the furthering of the good works of Days for Girls in the world. Luxury Cards take this one step further. Able to be bought individually or in packs of 10, each card bought will ensure that a young girl in an underprivileged part of the world will stay in school up to three years longer than would otherwise be possible.
