2 APRIL SPEAKER Jerry Park JERRY PARK J erry Park is a Southerner. Born and raised. His soul forever imprinted by his heritage. That means there s a story in everything he sees, and he tries to tell it in the resulting photograph. Tradition, loss, hope, tragedy, family and foolishness all the themes we are drawn to in the best of southern writing, historical and fictional. He offers the viewer a glimpse into that lush mosaic by looking at images. He also often accompanies his photographs with written expressions short stories, essays, poems brought to the surface by his own contemplation of the print. Jerry is exhibited in galleries around the country, two of which have designated him as an Artist of Distinction. His hometown gallery in Nashville is The Arts Company. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Tennessee State Museum and Colorado Center for Fine Art Photography in. He is collected by several commercial clients and has been published in books, magazines, and newspapers. jerryparkphotography.com 2 T HE NPC HISTOGRAM APRIL 2016

6 THE ADVENTURE GROUP TOM VENTRESS MARILYN SPICER Auto Focus JANIS TOMANEK March brought one of the favorite NPC Adventure Group outings in the form of a trip to Old Car City in White, Georgia. It s only a three hour drive from Nashville, but a world away in terms of visual experience. The predicted heavy thunderstorms for the day never materialized and the nine NPC members who made the trip this year came away with lots of images, smiles, and a trip full of fun. Old Car City is so rich with subject matter it doesn t matter which way you turn you can find something to shoot. Brent Wright MORE PHOTOS ON PAGES 7&8 6 T HE NPC HISTOGRAM APRIL 2016

21 PARTING SHOT ANSEL ADAMS Shortly after the U.S. entered World War II, President Roosevelt issued Executive order 9066, which declared areas of the country military zones. This led to the forced relocation of over 110,00 American citizens of Japanese ancestry men, women, and children to internment camps. In 1943, Ansel Adams photographed inside the Manzanar Relocation Center, one of ten internment camps located across the United States. During his time there he shot this still life in the home of the Yonemitsu family, whose son who was serving in the U.S. Armed Forces while his family awaited his return in the internment camp. PHOTOGRAPH BY ANSEL ADAMS. IN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN. The internment is now recognized as a violation of their human and civil rights. In 1980 President Jimmy Carter opened an investigation to determine whether the decision to put Japanese Americans into internment camps had been justified by the government. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Civil Liberties Act, which apologized for the internment on behalf of the U.S. government and authorized a payment of $20,000 to each individual camp survivor. The legislation admitted that government actions were based on race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership. Pictures and mementos on phonograph top: Yonemitsu home, Manzanar Relocation Center. Autographed photograph, religious card, stamped envelopes, ornamental squash and a potted plant on doily on a table top.
