1 THE HELM Fall 2006 By Stan Barnes, President Published for members of the USCGC Duane Association Everyone had fun at our Hull Reunion Well, what can I say. For those of you who who did not come to this year s reunion, you missed one heck of a good time. Bob and Jeanne went so far above and beyond. This was such a very special event that those of us that were there will never forget. I would like to thank everyone who came with their contributions both to the gathering and the auction. We brought in $ which is almost three times what we would have if a raffle were held. Auctions are the thing for the future. Jay s tour of Fort Warren was great. I doubt that anyone realized just what the fort was all about before the tour. So much history. Ed McDevitt and his crew of the tug McDevitt Girls and the crew at Jo s deserve a very special thank you from all of us. To the crew at the Port Allerton Coast Guard Station, we thank you for your assistance with the laying of the wreath and your hospitality on base. We would have liked to have met Liberty (station mascot) even if it meant a few fingers. President Stan Barnes served as auctioneer at the banquet. What can I say about the Clarion? They were great. The rooms were real nice with most having ocean views. Steve and his crew could not do enough for us. My personal thanks goes out to Dave Bunch for his assistance with the auction. Dave, you missed your calling when you did not go to comedian school. To Bob Dinsmore and Bill Quinn, thank you for your input as guest speakers. You were both very interesting. Next year, we will be in South Portland, Maine at the Best Western Merry Manor on September 13, 14, 15. Still the plans have not been completed as of yet. They will be posted in the winter issue of the Helm along with a Plan of the Day. To Bob and Jeanne, I as President of the USCGC Duane Association would like to extend to you from all the crew, a very heartfelt thank you and may God Bless. Your effort to make this 2006 reunion the best of all time will never be forgotten.

3 USCGC Duane Association Newsletter Jo s Nautical Bar has a distinct Coast Guard influence. Vicki Stevens talked about the life-saving service at the Hull Lifesaving Museum. 4 Fall 2006 Bob Dinsmore gave an excellent talk on the history of lightships at Pt. Allerton Station s training room. Bill Quinn of the Orleans Historical Society described the restoration of historic CG36500 which rescued 32 seaman from the SS Pendleton sinking. 5 Good people, good reunion USCGC Duane Association Newsletter We d like to send out a big Thank You to all the folks who helped to make our reunion in Hull such a successful one. To members Jay Schmidt for his great tour of the fort, and to Bob Dinsmore for his informative talk on the lightships that once guarded our coast. We are most appreciative for the time and effort that they put into their programs, and to the time they contributed to meetings to put the whole thing together. On the local level, we are indebted to Mike and Ed McDevitt Mike for having us as his guests on the tugboat, McDevitt Girls to Ed for putting together the very impressive Wreath Ceremony, to Webmaster Norm Reynolds for his great pictures and to all the gang at Jo s Nautical Bar for their hospitality after the trip. We also send our thanks to CWO Guthlein and the crew at Point Allerton Coast Guard Station for their contribution to both the activities on Friday at the Wreath Ceremony and Saturday at the base. And finally, our thanks go to Corinne and Vicki at the Hull Lifesaving Museum who filled us in on this historic site the original Life-saving Service founded by Joshua James and the brave men of Hull. With gratitude to all, Bob and Jeanne Haviland Al Phaneuf (left) and Bill O Connor both served together on the Duane in WW II. They were reunited for the first time since the war at our banquet.
