1 Greater New Orleans Photographic Society Promoting the Enjoyment of Traditional and Digital Photography Vol. 55, No. 05 May, 2008 City Park Field Trip Story by Judy Nasralla For our April Field trip, we chose to revisit City Park. Jackie Farrow, Al Pacheco, Tom Bush and I met at the CC's on Esplanade and after a cup of coffee, drove to the site of Popp's fountain. Unfortunately, although it has been cleared, there is no evidence of any revitalization of this area. After that we drove to the Casino area, which is undergoing extensive improvements, but unfortunately had orange mesh strung all through it. We managed to cross over a bridge onto an island which Jackie found out is being developed by Shell as a teaching area for fishing. By then, the Sculpture garden was open and we stayed until close to noon enjoying the beautiful morning and the garden. See more photos on page 6. DP Competitions The judge for the April DP competitions was photographer Judi Bottoni. Judi is a photographer for the Associated Press and a member of the Photo Alliance. The "co-judge" was Jane Pyle, who is an artist that works mostly with oils. Judi is a freelance photographer. Her work has appeared nationwide in many publications, including USA Today, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Miami Herald. Locally she is a member of the New Orleans Photo Alliance. Jane is an artist who works in acrylics. The club wants to thank Judi Bottoni and Jane Pyle for taking the time to judge the DP competitions. The April chairpersons Connie Allotto and Judy Nasralla did a great job planning the club s activities for April. Thank you ladies! Critiquing the DP entries is Jane Pyles. Judi Bottoni, Judy Nasralla, Jane Pyles, and Connie Allotto.
3 May, 2008 News Briefs Marriott Exhibit The club's exhibit at the Marriott changed in April. The theme for this showing is "musicians". This is to appeal to the visitors coming in for the French Quarter festival and the two weekends of Jazz Fest. Answering to the call for participants are Dr. Fred Husserl, Dr. Tom Oelsner, Jean Manale, Pat Ammon, Jackie Farrow, and Rose Parker. The change of images took place on Friday, April 11th. The opening breakfast was held Sunday April 13th from 7:30-10:30 am. If you missed the opening breakfast stop by the Marriott when you get a chance to see this great exhibit. Correction Jean Manale actually got Carroll Grevemberg to judge the May competitions. Thank you Jean. Free Photoshop Program Have you ever listened to Jerry Seregni on WWL-4 on the morning news. He does a spot called Digital Gumbo. Today he talked about a free Photoshop program that club members might like to know about. Whatever he talks about he also puts on the WWL-4 website under the title Digital Gumbo. Thought you might mention it in the next newsletter. Here's a blurb from his column: "It's called PhotoShop Express, and Adobe has taken some of PhotoShop s best image editing technology and made it accessible on the Web -- for FREE! All you have to do is sign-up. Once The Shutterbug you have a PhotoShop Express ID, you get up to 2 gigabytes to store your images online, edit them, and share them, including transferring them to and from popular sites like Facebook or Picasa." Congratulations For those of you who don t know, club member Henry Pearce is a WWII veteran and currently the Historian/ Memorabilia custodian for the 379th Bombardment Group. Henry has about 20 of his photos, of member veterans at the group events, used in the centerfold of the 2007 issue of the quarterly publication Contrails. Congratulations Henry! And thank you for your service to our country. Photography Classes Bud Logan will be holding photography classes at a new business in Kenner. The Art Workshop located at 3901 Williams Blvd. will be conducting these classes starting with Introduction To Digital Photography on Wednesday nights from 7PM to 8:30PM. The course runs 10 weeks starting Wednesday, April 9th and the cost is $ Amateur Photography classes will start later in the spring. To sign up contact Jena at May birthdays: May 5 - Dale Fleishmann Page 3 Message from Editor! This issue of the Shutterbug newsletter will be the last one done by me. I have enjoyed bringing you the monthly newsletter for over 8 years. Thank you all for the positive feedback I received about the newsletter over the years. Your kind comments and suggestions motivated me to do my best to bring you an informative newsletter every month. You all are the reporters and photographers that provided the stories and the pictures for the newsletter. I couldn t have done it without your support. I want to thank you all for your support. Kerri Faircloth has kindly volunteered to accept the editor position of the Shutterbug newsletter starting in May. She will publish the June issue. I know you all will give Kerri the support you gave me as editor. Kerri will also take over as webmaster for the club s website at gnocc.org. I want to thank Kerri Faircloth for taking over the functions of newsletter editor and webmaster for the club website. Kerri has the skills and motivation necessary to do a great job at both positions. The club really appreciates your help Kerri. I especially want to thank Tracy Clouatre, a great photographer, who was also the official Shutterbug photographer for several editors over the years. Many of you knew and loved Tracy who passed away in April/2007. I also want to thank the current Shutterbug photographer Ricky Gilmore who has done a great job shooting pictures at our meetings and other events for the newsletter. Again, thank you all for your support. Tom Zaccaria Former editor and webmaster

7 May, 2008 Show and Tell - Listen and Learn! The program tonight was the brainchild of Connie Allotto. Club members were asked to bring a print or digital image to the Show and Tell meeting and tell us in detail how the image was taken, what lens, the ISO, F-stop, time of day, location, standing on a ladder, laying on the ground and what type of camera was used. They can bring more then one image or bring something to show us that is different from the norm. The Shutterbug Page 7 The participation was great. Many of our members brought at least one image to show & tell. See photos on pages 4 and 5. Mike Parker demonstrated a free photo editing program called Google Picasa, Tom Oelsner showed us how he created his show & tell photo in Photoshop, Bill Pinto showed us a home made copy box and photos of objects he photographed using the copy box. Thank you Connie Allotto for planning this fun program. The program of "show and tell - listen and learn" was beneficial especially for new members and the less experienced. A special thank you to the April chairpersons Connie Allotto and Judy Nasralla for getting the judges, planning the fun field trip to City Park, and the great Show & Tell program. You ladies did a great job. Judy Nasralla discussing the digital images she brought for the Show & Tell. The Shutterbug is published monthly by Greater New Orleans Photographic Society which serves photographic enthusiasts in New Orleans and its suburbs. Our regular meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. at Munholland United Methodist Church, 1201 Metairie Road, Metairie. Visitors are always welcome. Susan is one of 12 full-time staff photographers for the Times-Picayune in New Orleans. Thursday, May 15th, 7:00 p.m. The program for tonight will be infrared photography both on film and by digital capture. Mike Brouphy will be doing the technical intro and the infrared film presentation and Ellis and Robert Perez will do the presentation on digital IR. Tonight I will also pass out the shootout/scavenger hunt information that will be presented as the June program. Tonight is also the night to submit the slides that you plan to enter in the June competitions. You may enter 2 color slides in our open topic pictorial slide competition, 2 color slides in our nature competition and 2 color slides in our assigned topic competition. The June assignment is Vegetables. May Field Trip The field trip for May will be to the Botanical Gardens at City Park. Not a glamorous trip but at $3.25+ for gas the trip is local and applicable to the vegetable assigned topic for June. There is a vegetable garden on the west side. The gardens open at 10am and Mike Brouphy would like to meet at about that time out front and enjoy the morning light. For those who want to bring a lunch and break about noon we can have lunch in the gardens for an hour or so. After that we can go back to photographing the flora. The gardens close at 4pm.
