The fabric requirements, below, are for fusible machine applique. If using machine embroidery, you must adjust your fabric requirements accordingly. The fabrics used in this project, as shown on the cover, are from my Fresco collection for Robert Kaufman fabrics. The color names below, are specific to the collection. These requirements are for non-directional prints. Background/Aloe: 17 x 17" Binding, acorn bottom/cocoa: 15" square cut for making bias binding and 3 x 6" for acorn bottom Acorn top and stem/chocolate: 4 x 4" Two leaves/gold 1: 5 x 7" Two leaves/ Rust 1: 5 x 7" Backing and batting: 17 x 17" Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive: Two 9 x 12" sheets Sulky Tear-Easy stabilizer: Two 8 x 8" pieces Additional supplies and tools - I used coordinating Sulky 40wt rayon thread for quilting and satin stitching. - You ll also need an iron, fabric and paper scissors, and a fine point marker for tracing the templates. Cut the placemat top as instructed on the quarter template. 2. Cut continuous bias binding from the 15" square of the binding fabric, according to the instructions included in this pattern. Trace all applique templates onto the paper side of the fusible adhesive leaving approximately ½" between tracings.trace the dashed placement/stitching lines, if desired. 4. Roughly cut the templates from the adhesive just outside of the traced line. 5. Place the adhesive templates onto the wrong side of their corresponding appliqué fabrics and fuse in place according to manufacturer s instructions. 5. Neatly cut the appliqués from the fabrics on the traced template lines. 6. Transfer the dashed stitching lines to the right side of the fabric with a non-permanent pen or pencil, if desired. You can use a light table or daylit window. 7. Peel the paper backing from the appliqués and arrange them on the background/placemat top. Overlap the apllique pieces using the dashed lines as a quide. Fuse appliqués into place. 8. Place the Sulky Tear-Easy stabilizer behind the appliqués and satin stitch their raw edges, using Sulky Premium 40 wt rayon thread. Remove the stabilizer after stitching. 9. Sandwich batting between top and backing with wrong sides of fabrics against batting. 10. Quilt as desired. I quilted around each of the appliques and meander quilted the background in matching thread. 11. Bind in your usual manner being careful to not stretch the bias binding as you pin it to the raw edge of the placemat.

7 B Continuous Bias Binding Instructions Create a continuous bias binding strip, economically. Cut the bias binding fabric square in half once diagonally (45 degree angle). Place the two triangular pieces right sides together along straight edge as shown in Illustration A. Press. Using a gridded transparent ruler, measure from the long edge and draw a parallel line every 2¼ on the wrong side of the fabric, as shown in Illustration B. Fold the marked piece right sides together to form a tube, aligning the edges and pinning the marked lines so one width of the binding extends beyond the edge on each side as shown in Illustration C. Sew the tube together and press the seam open. Cut on the marked line to make one continuous 2¼ wide bias binding strip. Use this strip to bind any curved edges. 8 Apple Bars INGREDIENTS 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup chopped apple 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts 2 tablespoons white sugar 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x9 inch pan. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon; set aside. In a large bowl, mix together melted butter, brown sugar, and 1/2 cup of white sugar with a wooden spoon until smooth. Stir in the egg and vanilla. Blend in the flour mixture until just combined, then stir in the apples and walnuts. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared pan. In a cup or small bowl, stir together the remaining cinnamon and sugar; sprinkle over the top of the bars. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in preheated oven; finished bars should spring back when lightly touched. Cool in the pan, and cut into squares. Artwork 2012 Patrick Lose Simple Waldorf Salad INGREDIENTS 6 cups diced apples 1 cup chopped celery 1 cup chopped pecans 1 cup mayonnaise 6 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup heavy whipping cream Combine apples, celery and pecans in a bowl. Whisk mayonnaise, sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon together in a separate bowl until well combined. Whip heavy cream with an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Fold into mayonnaise mixture to make a creamy dressing. Fold apple mixture into the dressing until coated. Chill in refrigerator for about 1 hour. Artwork 2012 Patrick Lose
