1 The Flake Family Skill level - Intermediate Technique: Satin Stitch Brand: Dual Duty XP Crafting time: Day Size Final Measurements: 21 1/2 x 25 1/2 Materials Dual Duty XP General Purpose thread Coats Rayon Embroidery Thread. 1 yard light blue background fabric. 1 yard dark blue fabric for backing and sashing. 1/2 yard medium blue multi print with metallic highlights. 1/4 yard white on white star print fabric for snow bank. 1/8 yard white on white floral print fabric for snow bodies. 1/4 yard medium blue fabric for trees. Dark blue or black scraps for tree trunks Additional Requirements Sewing machine. Scissors. Marking pen. Extra wide double fold bias tape: One (1) 3-yd package. Paper backed fusible web: 1/2 yard. Stabilizer. Batting: craft or low loft, 1 yard. Temporary spray adhesive. By Elizabeth Hill

2 Notes 1. Pattern pieces are reversed from the original for easy tracing of pattern pieces on to the paper side of the temporary adhesive backing. 2. Satin Stitch: For body parts, legs, arms, hats, tree, tree trunk, and snow bank: Width 3.1 mm Length.5 mm. For gloves and boots: Width 2.5 mm Length:.5 mm. 3. Test satin stitch on fabric scraps before you begin to appliqué. Adjust tension as needed. 4. Seam allowances: 1/4 inch. 5. The buttonhole stitch may be used for appliqué in place of the satin stitch. 6. Use stabilizer underneath fabric for the best results when satin stitching. Fuse to back of appropriate fabrics. Trim paper and fabric to the pencil outline. Note: for snow people clothing and accessories fussy cut from the multi print fabric for desirable print combinations. Instructions 1. Cut: 1 18 x 24 light blue background fabric /2 by 21 1/2 strips from dark blue backing fabric 2 2 1/2 by 18 strips from dark blue backing fabric 1 23 x 28 dark blue backing fabric 1 23 x 28 batting 2. Trace pattern pieces to the paper backing of the temporary adhesive. The tree pattern pieces will need to be taped together. 3. Cut pattern pieces a scant 1/8 inch from pencil outline. Fuse to back of appropriate fabrics. Trim paper and fabric to the pencil outline. Note: for snow people clothing and accessories fussy cut from the multi print fabric for desirable print combinations. 4. Appliqué: Fuse appliqués to the light blue background in this order: A. Position snow bank along the bottom edge of the background fabric. Place tree trunk along the outside edges of the background fabric putting the bottom edge of the trunk under the snow bank. Fuse both in place according to manufacturer s instructions. B. Place tree tops on top of tree trunks overlapping edges by a scant 1/8 inch. Fuse in place. Thread machine with Coats Machine Embroidery Thread on top and Coats Bobbin thread in the bobbin. Satin stitch around raw edges with Coats Machine Embroidery Thread. C. Position body parts as desired. (See diagram below) Fuse in place. With white machine embroidery thread, appliqué the main body pieces in place with a satin stitch. D. Add accessories. Fuse. Appliqué with a satin stitch. Pull all threads to the back. 5. Add facial features. Satin stitch eyes with black thread, straight stitch for the mouth. For the nose, with orange thread, start with a very narrow zig zag stitch and gradually increase to 3.1.

3 6. For arms and legs use a fabric marking pencil or tailor s chalk to draw stitching guidelines. Use a 3.1 width and 5 length setting on your machine. With dark blue or black machine embroidery thread make arms and legs using a satin stitch. Stitch. Corners may be mitered or overlapped. Fold pressed edge to the wrong side of quilt and sew in place by hand using a blind stitch. 7. Press from the wrong side. 8. Add quilt sashing. Sew 2 1/2 x 18 strips of dark blue fabric along the top and bottom of the wall hanging using a 1/4 seam allowance. Press. Add remaining sashing pieces to the left and right sides of the wall hanging. Press. 10. Assemble quilt. To finish wall hanging, place backing fabric right side down on a flat surface. Place batting on top of the backing fabric. Center the Flake Family on top of the batting right side up. Use temporary spray adhesive to baste the layers together. In addition, use quilting or safety pins to secure the layers before quilting on machine. 11. Thread machine with Dual Duty XP All purpose thread on top and in the bobbin. Quilt 1/4 from the inside edge of the sashing around all four sides. To avoid fabric slippage, use a walking foot. Set stitch length to one of the longest basting stitches. 12. Remove any pins. Trim backing and batting even with the front of the wall hanging. Unfold one edge of bias tape. Align cut edge of binding with edge of quilt, right sides together.
