3 Page 3 of 5 Sewing Sew with a scant ¼" seam allowance. Sew with right sides together (RST). Press seams as indicated by arrows. Making the Top Section Make the top section by sewing the following pieces together in the order given: Frame the 10" x 20 ½" Fussy Cut Large Center Panel with the Red Tonal 2 ½" x 10" strips on the sides, and 2 ½" x 24 ½" strips on the top and bottom. Add the Lt. Blue Tossed 3 ½" x 14" strips to the sides. Add the fussy cut 2" x 30 ½" ticket banner to the top, and the fussy cut 3 ½" x 30 ½" show banner to the bottom (Diagram A). The Top Section should measure 18 ½" x 30 ½". (A) Making the Bottom Section Center Panel Frame the Large 10" fussy cut square from the panel with two 1 ¾" x 10" Lime Tonal strips on the sides, and two Lime Tonal strips, with 1 ¾" Red Tonal squares sewn on opposite ends, on the top and bottom. The Center with frame should measure 12 ½" square (Diagram B). (B) Pieced Segments Sew the 3" Just Color Green strip, 1 ½" Red Tonal strip, and 3" Lt. Blue Tonal strip lengthwise as shown. With the rotary cutter and acrylic ruler, square one end and cut eight, 3 ½" x 6 ½" sections (Diagram C). Star Blocks STAR TEMPLATE Trace the Star template on the paper side of Lightweight Fusible web, four times. Cut out about 1/8" outside the drawn line. Press, according to the manufacturer s directions, on the WRONG SIDE of the Just Color Butterscotch. Cut out on the line. Remove the paper backing. Center one on each of the four 6 ½" Dk. Blue Tonal squares. Finish the edges with a small zig zag, satin, or buttonhole stitch (Diagram D). Tip: Use tear away stabilizer to prevent puckering. 4 Page 4 of 5 Bottom Star Section Top and Bottom Rows: Position one Star Block, one 3 ½" pieced segment, one 6 ½" fussy cut square, a second 3 ½" pieced segment, and a second Star Block as shown, and sew together. Repeat to make two for the top and bottom rows. Finished rows should measure 6 ½" x 24 ½". Sides: Position one 3 ½" pieced segment, one 6 ½" fussy cut square and a second 3 ½" pieced segment as shown and sew together. Repeat to make two sides. Finished rows should measure 6 ½" x 12 ½" (Diagram E). (E) Top Row Bottom Row Left Column Assembling the Bottom Section Right Column Make the bottom section by sewing the following pieces together in the order given: Sew the right and left columns to the Framed Center Panel. Sew the top and bottom rows to the Framed Center Panel, nesting the seams. Sew the 3 ½" x 24 ½" Yellow Print strips to the sides, and the 3 ½" x 30 ½" strips to the top and bottom.the Bottom Section should measure 30 ½" square (Diagram F). (F) Making the Flags Mark the center of one short side of the 4 ¾" x 7" Lime Tonal and Lt. Blue Tonal rectangles and cut off the corners with a rotary cutter and acrylic ruler as shown. Pair up triangles (RST) using a Lime Tonal and Lt. Blue Tonal. Pin and carefully sew together on the angled sides. Trim the tip, turn right side out, and press flat. Tip: Gently pull out point with the tip of a seam ripper or awl. Position on one 6 ½" x 32 ½" Red Print border piece, approximately 1 ½" apart as shown, and baste close to the open edge (Diagram G). 5 Page 5 of 5 Final Assembly Sew the top section and bottom section together as shown, to measure 30 ½" x 48 ½". Sew the three 1 ½" x 42" Med. Blue Tonal strips together on the short sides, and cut two 48 ½" segments. Pin and sew to the sides of the previous section. Pin and sew the two 1 ½" x 32 ½" Med. Blue Tonal strips to the top and bottom. Pin and sew the 6 ½" x 50 ½" Red Tossed border strips to the sides. Sew two 6 ½" fussy cut squares to opposite sides of the plain 6 ½" x 32 ½" Red Tossed border strip and sew to the top. Repeat with the border strip with the flags and sew to the bottom, so the raw edge of the flags is included in the seam. The finished quilt top should measure 48 ½" x 62 ½" (Diagram H). (H) Quilting Piece the back by cutting the 3 yards into two 54" x 40" pieces. Remove selvages. Sew together to make one piece approximately 54" x 80" (Diagram I). Press back and front well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, and quilt top (wrong side down), and baste well. Either hand or machine quilt according to personal preference. Quilt in the ditch, and along a grid, or use overall free motion quilting. Keep the pennants free as you quilt. Trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete. (I) 54" 40" Binding Use the six 2 ½" strips (Med. Blue Tonal) for the binding. Cut the ends at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end to make one piece of binding approximately 240 inches long. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together, turn the folded edge to the back and hand stitch in place Studio e Fabrics 40" Backing 54" x 80"
