2 Materials and Cutting Fabric Yardage Cutting* Other Hearts Stella-WG301 Gold Scallop Dot Stella-SRR512 Marina Net Stella-370 White Hearts Stella-WG301 Tomato Hearts Stella-WG301 Mint Waiting for Santa Stella-1011 Multi Snow Globes Stella-1012 Multi North Pole Forest Stella-1013 Multi 2 5 /8 yards 2 1 /2 yards each 1 yard 1/2 yard 1/4 yard 1/4 yard 1/4 yard Batting 62" x 72" Cut: Two strips, 18" x width of fabric (WOF), for backing. Four strips, 13" x WOF for backing. From each fabric, cut: One large width of fabric (WOF) square. (See TIP, below.) Cut the square once diagonally to make two large triangles for background and backing. From each of the remaining yardages, cut: Two wide background strips, 13" x WOF. Two narrow background strips, 8" x WOF. Cut: Two diamonds. One each of letters N, A, U, G, H, T, and Y. Seven strips, 2 1 /4" x WOF, for binding. Cut: Two diamonds. One each of letters N, I, C, and E. Cut: One diamond. Cut: Two diamonds. Cut: One diamond. Double-sided fusible web, 17"-width, optional 3 yards *Before cutting, print eight copies of the diamond template, two copies of the letter N, and one copy of each of the remaining letter templates. If using double-sided interfacing, trace the templates wrong side up on the paper side of the interfacing, then fuse templates to the fabrics indicated in the cutting list, according to manufacturer's instructions. Cut out each appliqué on the line. TIP-How to Cut a WOF Square Remove the selvage from one long edge and square up one short edge of the fabric yardage. Place the yardage on a large flat surface, with the cut edges to the bottom and right. Fold the fabric in half diagonally, along the bias, making sure not to overlap the remaining selvage. 3 Note: All seam allowances are 1 /4" unless otherwise specified. Press seam allowances open unless otherwise indicated. Make the Background Trim any remaining selvages from the background strips. Join two matching wide background strips along one short end. Press the seam open. Join two matching narrow background strips along one short end. Press the seam open. Align the two triangle units along the diagonal edges, matching the seamlines of the large inner triangles. Join the two units together. Press the seam open. Trim the upper right and lower left points as shown to complete the background. Being careful not to stretch the cut bias edge, arrange one matching triangle and the narrow background strip as shown. Join the strip and triangle along the adjacent edge. Press the seam open. Trim the lower strip edge even with the lower edge of the triangle. Trim the upper strip diagonally, in line with the diagonal edge of the triangle. Join the wide background strip to the lower edge of the triangle, and trim the strip ends as shown. Add the Appliqués Note: If using double-sided fusible interfacing, fuse each template to the background fabric before appliqueing in each step. Fold the quilt background in half lengthwise, and gently press the fold. Open the folded background and refold in half crosswise, and gently press the fold again, to mark the quilt center. Referring to the quilt photo for fabric placement, arrange the eight diamonds at the quilt center, aligning the diamond edges with the seam between the triangles and the crease lines. Pin (or fuse, if using fusible interfacing) the diamonds in place. Using matching thread and a stitch on your choice, sew along the outer edges of each diamond to appliqué each shape in place. Letter I Repeat steps 1 3 with the remaining matching triangle, wide, and narrow background strips. PAGE 3 OF 14

4 Referring to the quilt photo, center the N, I, C, and E letters on the white background above the diamonds, placing the letters 1" apart and about 2" from the upper raw edge of the quilt background. Pin or fuse the letters in place. Using matching thread and a stitch on your choice, sew along the outer edges of each letter to appliqué each letter in place. Referring to the quilt photo, center the N, A, U, G, H, T and Y letters on the Marina background below the diamonds, placing the letters 1" apart and about 2" from the lower raw edge of the quilt background. Pin or fuse the letters in place. Using matching thread and a stitch on your choice, sew along the outer edges of each letter to appliqué each letter in place. grainline Make the Backing Sew the two backing triangles together along the long edge to make a large square. Press the seam open. Sew one 18"-wide backing strip to the top of the large square along one large edge. Sew the remaining 18"-wide backing strip to the bottom of the large square. Press the seam allowances toward the large strips. Join two 13"-wide backing strips along one short edge. Press the seam open. Repeat for the remaining pair of strips. Sew one strip to each side of the backing. Trim the excess strip length even with the upper and lower backing edges. Finishing Layer the backing, batting, and quilt top. Baste the layers together and quilt as desired. Stitch around the perimeter of the quilt, a scant 1 /4" from the edge. Trim the batting and backing even with the edge of the quilt top.
