Pattern #26460 RE /2 yard Backing (Pattern #26458 BLU1 suggested)... 5 yards Batting...68" x 86" Paper-backed fusible web (18" wide)... 6 yards White rickrack ( 3 /4 " wide) /2 yards ouble-sided white foam fusible stabilizer (20" wide)...1 yard White flannel or thin batting... 1 /2 yard Additional Supplies: Terial Magic (spray stabilizer) or starch CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS: Please read all instructions carefully before beginning. ¼" seam allowance is included in measurements and all strips are cut across the width of the fabric unless noted otherwise. Label pieces and keep together until ready to sew. These instructions are based on unwashed fabrics. WOF = width of fabric from selvage to selvage. LOF = length of fabric. A. Pattern #26454 MUL1 (panel): 1. Center and cut panel to 21 1 /2" x 40 1 /2". B. Pattern #26455 MUL1 (people): 1. Cut two 16" x 18" pieces of fusible web and two 16" x 20" pieces of foam stabilizer. Apply fusible web to wrong side of fabric (across width of fabric). Remove paper backing. Repeat with foam stabilizer. Cut out people, including a tiny margin of white fabric around each. C. Pattern #26456 MUL1 (wavy stripe): 1. ecide which curvy wave section will be used for each outer border. Each section should be identical and about 5" wide. 2. Cut four 5 1 /2" x 72" strips fusible web. Center and apply a fusible web strip along the length of the wrong side of each wave section. Cut along the wave on one edge of each fused section. Cut 5" from the curved edge on each section to make four identical 5" x approximately 72" strips. 3. Fold each strip across the 5" width, matching the swells of the waves in the two layers. Crease to mark the strip center. With strips still folded, trim two strips 34" from the center fold and two strips 25" from the center fold. Open to make two 5" x 68" strips and two 5" x 50" strips for outer border. 4. Cut fourteen 4" wide x 7" tall LOF rectangles from remainder of fabric (side pockets). Note: make sure the wavy stripe is parallel with the 7" side of the rectangles before you cut them.. Pattern #26457 BLU1 (dots): 1. Cut two 6 1 /2" strips. Sub-cut two 6 1 /2" x 35 1 /2" strips and two 6 1 /2" squares (appliqué borders and side pockets). 2. Cut a 68" x WOF piece. Sub-cut four 7" x 68" LOF strips, two 3" x 68" LOF strips and two 2 1 /2" x 68" LOF strips. E. Pattern #26457 PUR1 (dots): 1. Cut two 6 1 /2" squares (side pockets). F. Pattern #26457 RE1 (dots): 1. Cut two 6 1 /2" squares (side pockets). 3. Trace words on paper side of fusible web. Apply to wrong side of remainder of fabric, cut out letters and remove paper backing. G. Pattern #26457 YEL1 (dots): 1. Cut two 6 1 /2" squares (side pockets). H. Pattern #26458 BLU1 (flowers): 1. Cut six 6 1 /2" squares (four for border and two for side pockets) I. Pattern #26458 MUL1 (flowers): 1. Cut two 6 1 /2" squares (side pockets) J. Pattern #26460 KBLU1 (zigzag): 1. Cut two 1 1 /2" x 23 1 /2" strips. 2. Cut two 1 1 /2" x 40 1 /2" strips. 3. Cut one 3 1 /2" strip. 4. Cut eight 2 1 /4" strips for binding. K. Pattern #26460 LTGRE1 (zigzag): 1. Cut two 6 1 /2" squares (side pockets) 3. Cut two 7" strips. Sub-cut fourteen 4" x 7" rectangles (pocket lining). L. Pattern #26460 RE1 (zigzag): 1. Cut two 1 1 /2" x 37 1 /2" strips. 2. Cut three 1 1 /2" strips. Join with diagonal seams. Sub-cut two 1 1 /2" x 54 1 /2" strips. 3. Cut one 3 1 /2" strip. M. White Flannel or Thin Batting: 1. Cut two 7" strips. Sub-cut fourteen 4" x 7" rectangles (pocket interlining). PIECING INSTRUCTIONS: A. Panel: 1. Sew one 1 1 /2" x 40 1 /2" J strip to each side of panel. Press toward J. 2. Sew one 1 1 /2" x 23 1 /2" J strip to the top and bottom of panel. Press toward J. B. Side Pockets: 1. Using a 4" x 7" C rectangle, choose a shallow curving wave 1 /2"- 3 /4" from the top 7" edge to be the top of the pocket. Mark a curving line 3 /8" above the wave edge for seam allowance. Cut on the marked line. Pocket should be 3 1 /4"-3 1 /2" tall. Repeat with all C rectangles. 2. Cut twenty-eight 4" x 7" pieces fusible web. Place pocket right side up on your work surface. Place fusible web piece, paper side up, on top of the pocket. Trace the top edge of the wave (not the seam allowance top edge) on the fusible web (Figure1). Make two identical fusible pieces. Trim fusible web rectangles on the marked curve line. Remove paper backing. Fuse one to the wrong side of a K lining rectangle; trim edge of lining even with curved edge of fusible web and set aside. Repeat with remaining web piece and a flannel/batting rectangle; set aside. 3. Center and pin rickrack along top edge of wave on each C pocket piece. Sew along center of rickrack (Figure 1). (I found it easiest if I drew a light pencil line down the center of the rickrack to use as a sewing guide.) Clip seam allowance Trace and sew on edge of wave line Figure 1 4. Finger press rickrack to wrong side of each pocket and press with steam. Test matching fused lining and flannel/batting pieces to see if the curved edge still matches the curved edge of the pocket piece. Trim if needed. Insert flannel/batting piece under pressed seam allowance. Fuse to wrong side of wavy pocket. Fuse lining to back of pocket, covering seam allowance at top edge. 5. Sew a wide blanket stitch along edge of pocket to hold all layers in place (Figure 1).

3 6. Quilt some of the waves. Trim each pocket piece to 6 1 /2" wide x desired pocket height. Baste each pocket piece to a 6 1 /2" side pocket square to make fourteen pockets (Figure 1). 7. Join the pockets top to bottom to make two 6 1 /2" x 42 1 /2" strips of seven pockets each. Press seams down. Sew pocket strips to sides of quilt center. Press toward quilt center. C. Borders: 1. Apply spray stabilizer or starch to the 6 1 /2" x 35 1 /2" borders. When borders are dry and pressed, center and fuse prepared letters to each strip referring to the cover quilt. Blanket stitch with matching thread around all letters. Sew top and bottom borders to quilt center. Press toward borders. 2. Sew 1 1 /2" x 54 1 /2" L strips to sides of quilt center and 1 1 /2" x 37 1 /2" L strips to top and bottom, adjusting lengths of strips to fit your quilt, if necessary. Press toward L. 3. Sew 3 1 /2" strips of eight fabrics lengthwise together in any order to make a strip set or refer to quilt for order suggestion. Press to one side. Cut nine 3 1 /2" strips (Figure 2). Join pieced strips on ends to make a long strip. Take seams apart as needed to create two rows of 14 squares each for the top and bottom and two rows of 22 squares each for the sides. 4. Measure your quilt center. If it measures 37 1 /2" x 56 1 /2", trim the Figure 2 Cut 9. 3" x 68" strips to 3" x 56 1 /2" and sew to the sides of the quilt center. Press seams toward strips. Trim the 2 1 /2" x 68" strips to 2 1 /2" x 42 1 /2" and sew to the top and bottom. Press toward strips. 5. If your quilt center is a little larger or smaller than 37 1 /2" x 57 1 /2", measure the sides, trim the 3" x 68" strips to fit, sew to sides of quilt center and press toward strips. Repeat with 2 1 /2" x 68" strips and the top and bottom edges of the quilt center. H C 6. Sew the pieced side borders from step 3 to the sides of the quilt center and the remaining pieced borders to the top and bottom. Press toward the borders. If your pieced borders are too long for your quilt center, re-sew several seams with a slightly wider seam allowance. If your pieced borders are too short for your quilt center, remove seams and re-stitch with less than a 1 /4" seam allowance. 7. Apply spray stabilizer or starch to each 7"-wide strip and press dry. Fold the 7" x 68" strips in half across the 7" width and crease to mark center fold. Remove paper backing from the C border strips. Place the C strips on the strips, matching the center folds and aligning the long straight edge of each C strip with one long edge of each strip. Fuse. Machine blanket stitch along curved edge of each C strip. 8. Trim two fused strips to 6 1 /2" x 66 1 /2" and two to 6 1 /2" x 48 1 /2", removing an equal amount from each end of the strips and removing excess width from the edge. Note: Adjust lengths of fused strips to fit your quilt center, if necessary. 9. Sew the longer fused strips to the sides of the quilt center. Press toward the quilt center. Sew a 6 1 /2" H square to each end of the shorter fused strips. Press toward the squares. Sew the pieced strips to the top and bottom of the quilt center to complete the top. Press toward the pieced strips. Finishing: 1. Prepare backing with a vertical seam to measure 68" x 86". 2. Layer backing, batting and quilt top. Baste layers together. 3. Quilt as desired. NOTE: Make sure not to quilt the pockets closed. Ours was quilted with a design on the top of the back square only, not on the pocket. 4. Trim layers even with quilt top. 5. Sew 2 1 /4" J binding strips together end to end with diagonal seams. Press seams open. Press strips in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Sew binding to quilt using your favorite method. 6. Make a label and sew to back of quilt. 7. Machine blanket stitch around each of the people shapes with white thread to hold layers together, if desired. Place people in the side pockets.
