3 Page 3 of 8 Sewing Read all instructions before beginning the project. Use ¼" seam allowance and stitch with fabric right sides together unless otherwise noted. Press seams as shown by arrows. Elegant Feathers is composed of variations of three 12" patchwork block designs. If you wish to move the block components, change the fabric combinations, or rotate the blocks, a design wall will be helpful. Block 1 (Hint: This block uses all of the squares and rectangles that are 4 ½" wide.) Each block requires: 3 Small Paisley Flower Gold 4 ½" squares 1 Scattered Dots Red 4 ½" square 1 Tonal Leaves Green 4 ½" square 1 Tonal Leaves Blue 4 ½" square 1 Scattered Dots Purple 4 ½" x 8 ½" rectangle 1 Small Paisley Flower Black (Cream) 4 ½" x 8 ½" rectangle 1 Scattered Dots Red 4 ½" x 5 ½" rectangle 1 Tonal Leaves Purple 3 ½" x 4 ½" rectangle Using the Quarter Circle Arc Template provided, trace nine arcs on the paper side of the fusible web. Cut out on the traced lines. Place these arcs, paper side up, on the wrong side of 4 ½" squares (three Scattered Dots Red, six Small Paisley Flower Gold). Align the short sections of each arc with the raw edges of the squares. Following manufacturer s instructions, press fusible web arcs in place. Trace the Quarter Circle Template on the 4" square of template plastic. Cut out. Place the corner of the Template Plastic Quarter Circle Template in the corner of each square made in the previous step, as shown. Trace the curved edge of the Quarter Circle Template on the fusible web arcs. Cut on the traced line. Peel away paper arcs from the fabric quarter circles. Set aside remainder as scrap. Following the fabric guidelines below, align the corners of the quarter circles of fabric cut above with corners of 4 ½" squares as follows: Place wrong side of quarter circles to right side of squares. 3 Scattered Dots Red quarter circles on 3 Small Paisley Flower Gold squares 3 Small Paisley Flower Gold quarter circles on 3 Tonal Leaves Blue squares 3 Small Paisley Flower Gold quarter circles on 3 Tonal Leaves Green squares Press, activating fusible web. Machine appliqué the curved edge of the quarter circles with black or green thread. Tip: To reduce bulk, trim away excess fabric beneath the appliquéd quarter circles. Make 6 Cut on traced line

4 Page 4 of 8 Lay out the block components and assemble in vertical rows. Press seam allowances in the direction of the arrows. Repeat steps to make three blocks. Block 2 Each block requires: 1 Four Patch Circle (see below) 1 Tonal Leaves Green 3 ½" x 6 ½" rectangle 1 Scattered Dots Black (Cream) 3 ½" x 6 ½" rectangle 1 Small Paisley Flower Gold 6 ½" square 1 Large Paisley Flower Black (Cream) 6 ½" square Making the Four Patch (For Blocks 2 and 3) Make 12 Four Patches, configured as shown, using all of the 3 ½" squares. Press all seams open. Four Patches measure 6 ½" square. Select six of the Four Patches for Foundation Squares and six for Circle Appliqués. Tip: After appliquéing the circles, the excess foundation fabric beneath the circles may be cut away to reduce bulk. It is helpful to cut a slit ½" long near the center of the 6 Foundation Four Patches only before appliquéing the circles. Trace both lines of the circle template six times on paper side of fusible web. Also mark the four quarter circle registration marks on the fusible web circles. Cut out the fusible web on the inner circle line; cut ¼" away from the outer circle s line. Place the fusible web circles on the wrong side of the remaining six Four Patches, paper side up. Align the four registration marks with the four seams of the Four Patches. Press. Cut out only on the outer circle line. Peel paper away from Four Patch circles. Place Four Patch circles right side up on top of Foundation Four Patches, right side up. Align seam lines. Refer to the color diagram, rotating the circle until the Tonal Leaves Orange quarter circle lies on top of the Tonal Leaves Green square. Press. Machine appliqué with black or green thread. Make six. You will use three Four Patch Circle units in Block 2 and three in Block 3.

5 Page 5 of 8 Turn the Four Patch wrong side up. Slide a scissor blade into the slit of the Foundation Four Patch. Cut away excess foundation fabric only, leaving a generous ¼" seam allowance. Assembling the Block Lay out the pieces needed for each block as shown. For each block, sew together the 3 ½" x 6 ½" rectangles first. Press seams toward darker fabric. Then assemble the blocks as Four Patches - 2 rows with 2 squares each. Note the orientation of the Four Patch Circles and the position of each block in the quilt as shown. Press seams as indicated by arrows. Blocks measure 12 ½" unfinished. Block 3 Each block requires: 1 Four Patch Circle (made previously) 1 Tonal Leaves Green 3 ½" x 12 ½" rectangle 1 Scattered Dots Black (Cream) 3 ½" x 12 ½" rectangle 1 Tonal Leaves Blue 6 ½" square OR 1 Large Paisley Flower Black (Cream) 6 ½" square Lay out the pieces needed for each block as shown. To construct each block, first sew together the 6 ½" square units. Press seams away from the Four Patch Circles. Then add the 3 ½" x 12 ½" rectangles. Note the orientation of the Four Patch Circles and the position of each block in the quilt as indicated above. Press seams as indicated by arrows. Blocks measure 12 ½" unfinished. Finishing Sewing the Quilt Center Lay out the nine patchwork blocks of the quilt as shown. Sew together in three rows of three blocks each. Press seams as indicated by arrows. Project should measure 36 ½" square. Note: Not all interior seams will nest when joining the blocks or the rows.

6 Attach the Inner Border Measure the project from top to bottom through the center of the quilt. Cut the two Multi Stripe Red 2 ½" x 36 ½" strips to this measurement. Sew the strips to the sides of the quilt. Press seams toward the border. Page 6 of 8 Measure the project from side to side through the center of the quilt, including the two side border strips. Cut the two Multi Stripe Red 2 ½" x 40 ½" strips to this measurement. Sew the strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams toward the border. Attach the Outer Border Measure the project from top to bottom through the center of the quilt. Cut the two Large Paisley Flower Black (Cream) 5 ½" x 40 ½" strips to this measurement. Sew the strips to the sides of the quilt. Press seams toward the Outer Border. Sew the three 5 ½" x 42" Large Paisley Flower Black (Cream) strips together, end to end, creating one long strip. Measure the project from side to side through the center of the quilt, including the two side border strips. Cut the top and bottom outer border strips from the 5 ½" x 125" length created above. Sew the strips to the top and bottom of the quilt. Press seams toward the outer border. The quilt top should measure 50 ½" square.

7 Page 7 of 8 Making the Backing Cut and sew the 3 yards of backing fabric as indicated below to create a piece at least 58" square. Measure 58" along the selvage and rotary cut from selvage to selvage. Trim off all selvages. Split the remaining fabric (50") on the fold, creating two pieces 20" x 50". Sew together on the 20" sides, making a 20" x 99 ½" rectangle. Cut away the extra so that this piece measures 20" x 58". Pin and sew the 42" x 58" fabric piece to the 20" x 58" piece. 42" x 58" Assembling the Quilt On work surface, layer backing (wrong side up), 58" square of batting, and quilt top (right side up). Pin and/or thread baste. Machine quilting suggestions: An all-over feather design with variegated thread would echo the feather motif of the feature fabric. Hand or Machine quilting suggestions: Quilt in the seam lines or ¼" inside the seam lines to accent the geometric shapes. Quilt circles of various diameters randomly across the quilt. Trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete. 20" x 50" 8" x 20" Attaching the Binding Cut the ends of the six Tonal Leaves Blue 2 ½" x 42" strips at a 45-degree angle. Sew end to end, making one long strip. Press seams open. Fold binding in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Press. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge of the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch in place with coordinating thread Studio e Fabrics
