Cut 7 6 segments from each of 3 strip sets.. 4. Cut 6 6 segments from each of the remaining 2 strip sets. Step 1 Step 3 Step 5 5. Join 7 strip set segments to make a short border strip. Repeat. Trim 6. Join 9 strip set segments to make a long border strip. Repeat. Trim 7. Lay out the border strips around the quilt as shown. They will be longer than the sides of the quilt. Trim the border strips to the following lengths, trimming each strip at the end that will lie flush with a side of the quilt center as noted in diagram: Long borders = measured long side of quilt + 5 ¾ Short borders = measured short side of quilt + 5 ¾ 8. Matching the trimmed end with the top of the quilt, partially sew a long border strip to the right edge of the quilt, starting at the top and stopping 6 from the bottom of the quilt. 9. Matching the trimmed end with the left edge of the quilt, sew a short border strip to the top edge of the quilt. Trim Step 7 Trim 10. Matching the trimmed end with the bottom edge of the quilt, sew a long border strip to the left edge of the quilt. 11. Matching the trimmed end with the right edge of the quilt, sew a short border strip to the bottom edge of the quilt. 12. Complete the unfinished seam of the first border, extending it to the lower edge of the bottom border. The quilt top is complete and measures 57 ½ x 71 ½. Start seam here Stop seam here Step 8 Step 9 Step 10 Step 11 Page 8of 9
10 Quilting and finishing 1. Divide backing fabric into two equal lengths. Join pieces lengthwise. The seam will run horizontally on the back of the quilt. 2. Layer backing, batting and quilt top. Baste. 3. Quilt as desired. The quilt pictured on the cover was quilted in the ditch on both sides of the strips bordering the flying geese. Continuous curves were quilted in the large triangles of the flying geese units and a silhouette of a goose in flight was quilted in the white background spaces. The border was quilted with a large watery meander. 4. Join the 7 strips of binding fabric end to end. Press the resulting strip in half lengthwise to make doublefold binding. 5. Attach binding and enjoy your quilt. Alternate fabric cutting guidelines for scrap fabric options ¼ yard cuts of fabric allow quick and easy strip piecing for the border and fast piecing of the 99 small Flying Geese units. If you prefer, you can construct the quilt with smaller scraps, cutting and sewing the piano keys for the border individually. Two cutting options are offered below for using scraps for the Flying Geese units. Option 1 Cut fabric as described below and follow Flying Geese unit assembly instructions on page ¼ assorted green squares 6 5 ¼ assorted blue squares 5 5 ¼ assorted pink squares 4 5 ¼ assorted purple squares 4 5 ¼ assorted orange squares 30 3 ½ x 6 ½ rectangles from assorted colors for large Flying Geese White fabric cut as listed on page 1 1 ½ strips of random lengths as listed on page x 6 rectangles from assorted colors for piano key border. Option 2 To use scraps smaller than 5 ¼ square, construct small Flying Geese units using the same method as for large Flying Geese units on page 2, substituting 2 ½ x 4 ½ rectangles and 2 ½ squares. You will need an extra ¼ yard of white fabric. Cut fabric as follows: 23 2 ½ x 4 ½ assorted green rectangles 24 2 ½ x 4 ½ assorted blue rectangles 20 2 ½ x 4 ½ assorted pink rectangles 16 2 ½ x 4 ½ assorted purple rectangles 16 2 ½ x 4 ½ assorted orange rectangles 30 3 ½ x 6 ½ assorted color rectangles for large Flying Geese White fabric cut as listed on page 1 EXCEPT replace the 100 white 2 ⅞ squares with ½ squares. 1 ½ strips of random lengths as listed on page x 6 rectangles from assorted colors for piano key border Joanne Kerton Page 9 of 9
