1/2 yard yellow swirl, SB20053-310 2 strips 1 1/2" x WOF for outer checkerboard. 1 strip 2" x WOF; cut into (4) 2" x 4 1/4" rectangles, (8) 2" squares and (4) 1 7/8" squares.

4 strips 1 1/2" x WOF; cut into (2) 1 1/2" x 24 1/2" strips, (2) 1 1/2" x 26 1/2" strips and (4) 1 1/2" squares. 1 strip 2" x WOF; cut into (12) 2" squares.

Cut the squares in half diagonally to make 4 triangles. 2 strips 2 1/2" x WOF; cut into (8) 2 1/2" x 4 7/8" rectangles and (8) 2 1/2" squares. 1/2 yard white sheep, SB Prepare 2 5/8" and 2 1/2" square, clear templates. Fussy-cut squares referring to Preparing Pieces. 1 yard lining fabric (optional) 1 square 32" x 32" for quilting pillow top. 1 square batting 32" x 32" (optional) 26" x 26" pillow form Spray starch Preparing Pieces 1. Apply a heavy coat of spray starch to the white sheep fabric and press dry. Fussy-cut (8) 2 5/8" squares, using the clear template placed on-point on the fabric with a sheep centered. Note: These fussy-cut squares have bias edges and will stretch easily. Handle carefully. 2. Fussy-cut (12) 2 1/2" squares from the white sheep fabric, using the 2 1/2" clear template placed straight on the fabric with a sheep centered. 2 5/8" Square Cut 8 2 1/2" Square Cut Cut (1) 6 7/8" yellow sheep square in half diagonally from top right to bottom left to make top left (TL) and bottom right (BR) triangles. Cut the remaining 6 7/8" square from top left to bottom right to make top right (TR) and bottom left (BL) triangles. Cut 1 of each triangle 4. Place (2) 2 1/2" x 4 7/8" white rectangles wrong sides together on your cutting mat. Measure 2 1/2" from the bottom right corner and mark. Cut from the top right corner to the mark to make 1 angled piece and 1 reverse (R) angled piece. Repeat with remaining rectangles to cut 4 each angled and reverse angled pieces.

Press seams toward the square. Repeat on the remaining sides of the square to complete the 10 1/4" center square. 2.

3 Cut 4 of each piece Completing the Pillow Top Note: Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press seams as directed. Refer to exploded diagrams 1 4 at the end of this section as needed throughout the following steps. 1. Referring to exploded diagram 1 at the end of this section, center and stitch a 5 3/4" white triangle to opposite sides of the 7 3/8" yellow sheep square. Press seams toward the square. Repeat on the remaining sides of the square to complete the 10 1/4" center square. 2. Sew a 2" black square and then a 2" yellow square to the short ends of each 2" x 4 1/4" yellow rectangle to make 4 side strips. Press seams toward the black squares. Sew a 2" black square to the ends of 2 side strips. Press seams toward the strips. Make 2 of each 3. Referring to exploded diagram 2, stitch a shorter strip to opposite sides of the center square. Press seams toward the strips. Stitch the longer strips to the remaining sides of the center square to complete the 13 1/4" x 13 1/4" framed center. Press seams toward the strips. 4. Sew a 2 5/8" white sheep square between (2) 2 5/8" x 5 7/8" white rectangles to make (4) 2 1/8" x 13 3/8" pieced strip, turning the sheep to the right in 2 strips and to the left in 2 strips. Press seams toward the rectangles. Trim each strip to 13 1/4", keeping the sheep square centered in the length. (Hint: Fold the strips in half, matching the seams between the square and the white rectangles. Then measure 6 5/8" from the center fold and trim off the ends to keep the square centered.) Sew a 2 5/8" sheep square to the ends of the 2 pieced strips with sheep turned to the left. Press seams toward the squares. Make 2 of each 5. Referring to exploded diagram 3, sew the shorter pieced strips to the bottom left and top right edges of the framed center and the longer pieced strips to the top left and bottom right edges to complete the 17 1/2" x 17 1/2" pillow center, keeping the sheep upright around the yellow center square. Press seams toward the framed center. 6. Sew a 1 1/2" x WOF yellow strip lengthwise together with a 1 1/2" x WOF black strip to make a strip set. Press seam toward the black strip. Repeat to make a second strip set. Crosscut the strip sets into (40) 1 1/2" checkerboard segments. 1 1/2" Checkerboard Segment Cut Join 5 segments to make a 1 1/2" x 10 1/2" strip, alternating yellow and black. Press seams toward the black edges. Repeat to make 8 strips. Stitch a yellow triangle to the black end of 4 strips to make 4 checkerboard strips. Press seam toward the black strip end. Repeat with the remaining strips to make 4 reverse checkerboard strips, paying careful attention to the positioning of the yellow triangle. Sew a 1 1/2" black square to the yellow end of the reverse strips. Press seams toward the yellow strip end. Checkerboard Strip Make 4 Reverse Checkerboard Strip Make 4 8. To piece the top left corner triangle, sew a 2 1/2" sheep square between a 2 1/2" white square and a white angled piece. Press seams away from the sheep square. Repeat to make a reverse pieced strip using a reverse (R) angled piece and adding a second sheep square to the white square end. Press seams away from the sheep squares.

Referring to exploded diagram 4, center and stitch the top right and bottom left triangles to the edges of the pillow center. Press seams toward the triangles. Repeat with the top left and bottom right triangles. 13. Sew the 1 1/2" x 24 1/2" black strips to opposite sides of the pillow center and the 1 1/2" x 26 1/2" strips to the top and bottom to complete the pillow top. Press seams toward the strips. Exploded Diagram 4 Finishing the Pillow 1. For optional quilting, sandwich the batting square between the lining square and the completed top. Pin or baste to hold. Quilt as desired.

Trim batting and lining edges even with the top. 2. Fold the 26 1/2" right edge of a pillow back piece under 1/4". Press. Fold under 1/2" again, press and topstitch to hem 1 long edge. Repeat with the second back piece, hemming the left long edge. 3. Place the completed top right side down. Place a hemmed back piece right side up on top with raw edges aligned and the hemmed edge toward the center. Place the second back piece on top with raw edges aligned and hemmed edge overlapping the first back piece. Pin to hold. Machine-baste 1/8" from the outside edges. 4. Prepare binding using the 2 1/2" x WOF yellow strips. Bind the edges of the layered top using your favorite method. 5. Insert a 26" pillow form through the opening in the overlapped back pieces to use.
