1 Hip Packing Holster Read directions before starting. Seam allowances are ¼, basting is 1/8. Options are given to make slits for a belt or for a strap. Or you can do both. Make the following cuts in the order shown below: ¼ yd main fabric two 1 ¼ x w.o.f. for straps one - 7 ½ x 24 main body one - 6 ½ x 5 zippered pocket, bottom (D2) one - 6 ½ x 4 zippered pocket, top (D1) two - 4 x 2 for magnets ¼ yd lining fabric one - 7 ½ x 24 lining one - 8 x 4 ½ (C) elastic pocket ¼ yd fusible fleece one - 7 ½ x 24 fat quarter for binding seven - 2 ¼ bias strips (see last page of instructions for how to cut) 9 or larger zipper 6 piece of 1/8 elastic

2 Making Body of Holster: Fuse fleece to wrong side of lining fabric. Pin main fabric right side up on top of fleece or adhere using a fabric adhesive. Quilt by crosshatching, meandering, or the method you prefer. From quilted fabric cut one each of the following: 6 ½ x 16 body of holster (A) 6 ½ x 4 ½ pocket (B) With chalk or pen, trace a slight curve at one short end of holster. Cut on curve line. This is now the top of the holster. Bottom edge of holster is straight. Binding: Follow the instruction on the last page to cut binding strips from the fat quarter. Set aside smallest strip to be used for pocket (B), and miter the others together. Strap: Trim selvages from strap strips. With right sides facing, stitch two short ends together. Press seam open. With wrong sides together, press strap in half lengthwise. Open. Press one lengthwise edge to center fold mark. Repeat on other side. Fold strap in half lengthwise (no raw edges will show). Stitch close to edge. Loop: Cut a 3 ½ piece from strap. Make a loop. With main fabric facing up and straight edge at top, pin raw edges of loop 2 from right side. Stitch across top of loop to secure. Magnet covers: Press ¼ under on both short edges of both rectangles. With right sides together, fold rectangle in half. It now measures approx. 2 x 1 ¾. The pressed down edges is the top. Stitch sides. Turn right side out. Carefully poke out corners.

3 At bottom edge of holster on the main fabric side, center the open top of one magnet square ½ from the bottom edge and 2 ½ from the sides. Make sure the flat side of the magnet is facing up. Pin. Edge stitch around the square. This will also secure the opening closed. At top of holster on lining side, center second magnet s opening ½ from top, and 2 ½ from the sides, again making sure flat side of magnet is facing up. Stitch around the square. Belt Slits optional, if you want to secure the hip pack with a belt For a 1 wide belt, measure 4 ¼ from the very top of holster and 2 from a side. Draw a 1 ½ chalk line. (For a 1 ½ wide belt, draw a 2 line.) Repeat with a second chalk line on other side. Adjust zig-zag stitch so that it will be wide but tight. Test on a layered scrap of fabric. Zig-zag on each side of the first chalk line and at top and bottom of chalk line. Slit space between the two lines of zig-zag stitching being careful

Pocket B: Using the smallest bias binding strip that was set aside and with wrong sides facing, press strip in half. Align raw edges of bias strip to top edge of main side of pocket (B). Pin. Stitch.

When your hip pack is finished you can weave a belt in and out of the slits to the holster. Pocket B: Using the smallest bias binding strip that was set aside and with wrong sides facing, press strip in half. Align raw edges of bias strip to top edge of main side of pocket (B). Pin. Stitch. Trim excess from sides. Bring binding back to lining side. Pin. On Main fabric side, stitch in the stitch at the seam. This will secure binding to lining. Place pocket B on lining side of holster matching sides and having top edge of pocket 5 from the very top edge of holster and bottom edge pocket 6 ¼ from bottom of holster. On pocket, draw a chalk line vertically ½ from left edge. Draw another chalk line 1 ¾ from left edge. Starting at top of pocket, stitch down the second chalk line, across bottom of pocket, and up the first chalk line to top of pocket. (Do not stitch across top of pocket.) This forms the pen/pencil holder. Elastic pocket: On one long edge of fabric C, press under ¼ - 3/8. Press under again. Stitch close to bottom fold edge, forming a casing. Attach a small safety pin to one end of elastic. Start feeding elastic through casing. When end of elastic is ¼ from edge of casing, stitch back and forth to hold in place. Continue feeding elastic through casing. Once the pin and elastic is ½ out of casing, stitch back and forth to secure. Trim excess elastic from sides.

Don t worry if your fabric puckers at this point.

Rectangles will now measure 6 ½ x 4 ½ and 6 ½ x 3 ½. Sew a rectangle to each side of zipper.

5 Baste sides. Use a regular stitch length to go back With right sides facing out and aligning the bottom edges, pin side edges of elastic pocket (C) to side edges of pocket (B). Make two small tucks along bottom of pocket and pin. Baste sides. Stitch bottom of pockets. Don t worry if your fabric puckers at this point. tucks Zippered pocket: Press top of each pocket rectangle ½ to wrong side. Rectangles will now measure 6 ½ x 4 ½ and 6 ½ x 3 ½. Sew a rectangle to each side of zipper. (A zipper foot would be handy to use.) Notice how both ends of zipper extend past the rectangles. You don t want to include the hard bits that are on both ends of the zipper. Fold pocket in half, right sides together. Stitch bottom seam. Turn right side out. Press Back up zipper pull about 2. Pin side with zipper pull together as if the zipper is closed.

With right side facing up, align top of zippered pocket 2 from bottom of holster.

Edge stitch bottom of pocket. Binding Holster: Open zipper about 3.

Miter corners as you come to them. Ease in extra fabric when going around the curve.

6 With right side facing up, align top of zippered pocket 2 from bottom of holster. Pocket will be upside down and zipper will be towards bottom edge of holster. Baste sides. Edge stitch bottom of pocket. Binding Holster: Open zipper about 3. Align, then stitch, raw edges of binding to raw edge of main fabric beginning in middle of elastic pocket. Miter corners as you come to them. Ease in extra fabric when going around the curve. Bring binding back snuggly to lining of holster and pin. On main side of holster, stitch in the ditch along the binding. This will secure the binding to the lining side. If you prefer, you can slipstitch the binding by hand.

The stitching does not go all the way to top of flat edge as this will give you better access to your pockets when you open the holster.

7 With lining sides facing, fold bottom of holster 5 ½-5 ¾ towards top. Pin. Test to make sure magnets line up. To secure pockets, begin stitching in the ditch of binding seam 2 ½ from flat edge of holster to bottom. The stitching does not go all the way to top of flat edge as this will give you better access to your pockets when you open the holster. Belt Strap/Shoulder Holder: The belt strap/shoulder holder is optional. If you are planning on only wearing your holster with a belt, you don t need to make the strap. The strap gives you the option of tying the holster around your waist or using as a shoulder strap. Align strap so that 16 is on the right side of holster and remaining across pack and on other side. Bottom of strap will be 1 from top of pocket B. Edge stitch strap on top and bottom to holster from binding to binding. Tie a knot at both ends of strap. You are done!

8 How to Cut Bias Binding from a Fat Quarter: Press fat quarter. Fold as shown to align edges. Align ruler and cut at right angle from peak to bottom. Move left piece off to the side. Make four cuts at 2 ¼ each. Set aside the smallest cut to be used for Pocket B. Miter strips together using a ¼ seam allowance. Press seams open. With wrong sides facing, press binding in half lengthwise. Set binding aside. Feel free to share this pattern with others as long as you keep Fabric Buffet s logo and web address listed here.
