Appliquéd Monogram Tablet Sleeve By Sue Hausmann Thanks to Karen Hinrichs for idea and instructions!! Recently I was having lunch with my friend Karen Hinrichs and pulled out my Ipad. She was horrified I did not have it in a protective sleeve and immediately took out her tablet in a fabulous padded fabric sleeve she had just stitched up. I loved it and asked if I could share her idea and write instructions so all my sewing and quilting friends could make them. I love this project because you are making two mini quilts and topstitching them together to create the tablet sleeve. The sides are a wonderful pallet for embellishment and to experiment with different techniques or simply choose a beautiful print or batik fabric. Personalize with your monogram to make it your own. (See Two Easy Ways to Appliqué at the end of the tablet sleeve instructions.) Sewing Supplies: ½ yard Cotton fabric for most tablets (I used batik) ½ yard Soft n Stable OR Warm Fusible Fleece 1 Sewing thread ¼ wide Seam-A-Seam fusible web Point presser Pfaff Adjustable Guide Foot With Idt System Pfaff Clear 1/4 Inch Right Guide Foot With Idt System Sulky Totally Stable Create the pattern: 1. Place your tablet face up (or widest side up) on a piece of Totally Stable and trace around it with a pencil or pen. (I used Sulky Totally Stable as pattern material because I can fuse it over and over to fabric and cut out around this pattern.) 2. Mark an additional 1¾ to the longer side on one side only to add seam allowance and ease. 3. Mark an additional 2 to the shorter side on one side only to add seam allowance and ease. 4. Connect the new markings to trace the larger tablet shaped rectangle. This includes seam allowance Inside the rectangle, mark a ½ seam allowance on one long edge of the pattern (this is the bottom edge of the sleeve). The wider seam allowance along the bottom edge makes the turning opening easier to close.
2 6. Mark a ¼ seam allowance on the other three edges inside the rectabngle. 7. Place your tablet on the pattern and round each corner using the rounded corners of the tablet as a guide. I created a double curve at the top corners. Cut: Note: if you plan to appliqué or embellish one side of your tablet sleeve, cut and embellish a rectangle about 1 larger than the pattern on all four sides then trim down to the pattern after embellishment. Your embellishment stitches, appliqué, etc. can cause the fabric to shrink up slightly and it is important with this project that the sleeve sides are cut accurately so the tablet can slide in easily yet be snug! 1. Layer the fabrics for the outside and lining. You will have four layers of fabric. Press your Totally Stable pattern (or pin other pattern materials) on top and cut the four pieces. 2. Cut two pieces of Soft n Stable or Warm Fusible Fleece 1 from your pattern. I pinned two fabric pieces right sides together on top of one layer of Soft n Stable OR Warm fusible fleece and cut one side of the tablet sleeve, then repeated for the other side. This way the two sides were pinned and ready to sew. Sew: 1. Pin two fabric pieces right sides together on top of one piece of Soft n Stable or Warm Fusible Fleece. Repeat with the other fabric and fleece. 2. Insert a size 90 Topstitch needle and thread top and bobbin with sewing thread. 3. Snap on the Adjustable Guide Foot, engage the IDT and set the foot for a scant ½ seam allowance. (Scant is one click to the left of the ½ marking on the stitch plate.) Note: The following steps 4-9, are for one side of the tablet sleeve. Repeat for the second side 4. To stabilize the opening where the piece will be turned to the right side, begin stitching along the center of the bottom edge.
This is the edge with the ½ seam allowance. And stay stitch about 4 on the ½ seam line on the top layer of fabric only. Repeat this stitching the other layer of cotton to the fleece. This will stabilize the opening when you turn the piece right side out. 5. Begin stitching at the opening and stitch along the bottom edge with a ½ seam allowance. As you reach the corner, slide the guide on the Adjustable Guide Foot all the way to the presser foot to set it for ¼ seam allowance. Continue around the corner curve and stitch the side and upper curves and continue stitching with the ¼ seam allowance until you have rounded the last curve changing the Adjustable Guide Foot to ½ seam allowance to stitch along the bottom edge to the opening. Repeat for the other side piece. 6. Trim straight and curved seams with a pinking shear to eliminate bulk. Leave the opening untrimmed as it will be easier to finish. 7. Before turning, at the opening, press the ½ seam allowance to the wrong sides and place a strip of ¼ Steam-A-Seam 2 along the edge of the opening on one side. Press lightly. Let cool and remove paper. 8. Turn each sleeve side to the right side through the opening. Insert a point presser inside and press the point along all the seams and curves to make sure they are crisply turned. 9. Press well. 10. Snap on the ¼ foot with guide and topstitch the top edge of each piece beginning and ending at the inside curve along the top sides. 11. Press a ¼ strip of Steam-A-Seam 2 web at the edge on the wrong side along the side and bottom edges of one sleeve side. Press the two sleeve sides wrong sides together. 12. Using the flange guide of the ¼ foot with guide, topstitch 1/4 from the outside edge along the sides and bottom beginning and ending with reinforced stitching at the top of each side edge. Enjoy!! 3
Two Easy Ways to Appliqué By Sue Hausmann The word appliqué is has come to us from French and loosely translated means to lay on. To add a monogram to your Tablet Sleeve, try one of these two basic applique techniques. Fusible Web Satin Stitch Appliqué: Sewing Supplies: Monogram Pattern: Go into Word on your computer and select a font to create a pattern for the first letter of your last name. Select a simple font that will be easy to stitch around. I chose the H for Hausmann in the Arial Bold with the font size 500. Print your initial onto paper. This will be your pattern. Steam-A-Seam 2 Fusible Web Small piece of cotton fabric to coordinate with your sleeve fabric Prepare: 1. Trace initial onto Steam-A-Seam 2. The 2 in Steam-A- Seam 2 indicates there is a paper backing on both (2) sides of the fusible web. 2. Pull the paper that removes more easily off the fusible web. 3. Stick the fusible web side onto the printed initial paper. This way it won t slip around while you trace. 4. Trace the monogram onto the other paper side of the Steam-A-Seam Place the traced initial on the wrong side of your appliqué fabric web side down.
6. Press the Steam-A-Seam to the fabric 7. Cut out the monogram shape. This is your appliqué. 8. Pull off the paper and place the fabric appliqué monogram in the center of your sleeve side web side down. Steam-A-Seam 2 web is pressure sensitive so you can put it on and move it around to position. It is not permanent until you steam press it in place. 9. Once positioned, press the monogram in place. 10. Put two layers of tear-away stabilizer under the monogram. 11. Thread with 40 wt. Rayon on top and bobbin thread in the bobbin. (Bobbin thread is a finer weight thread that does not build up under the satin stitch.) 12. Snap on an Open Toe Appliqué foot or Decorative Stitch foot. These feet have a tunnel on the underside to feed over the build-up of satin stitching. 13. Set up for satin stitch. Practice on stabilized scraps of the same fabric as you experiment with settings on your machine. Select a zig zag stitch. Select a stitch width proportionate to your monogram appliqué. I used a 3.5 width. Adjust the stitch length as you sew so that the zig zag stitches are very close together but do not hang up on the foot. I used length 0.9. Adjust tension as needed so that the top thread is pulled under to the wrong side. Usually you will reduce the top tension 1 or 2 numbers. Experiment. Every machine is different! 14. Select needle stop down and satin stitch around the outside edge of the appliqué. Stitch all the way into corners then pivot. Practice makes perfect. 15. Tear away stabilizer from the wrong side. Raw Edge Straight Stitch Applique 1. Create the Monogram Pattern in Word as explained above Place a piece of your appliqué fabric right side up on the sleeve side.
3. Place the printed paper monogram initial pattern over it and pin or tape all down with transparent tape. 4. Place two layers of tear away stabilizer under the fabric. 5. Snap on a clear straight stitch foot. 6. Thread with 30 weight Cotton or Blendable thread for a hand look. 7. Select a straight stitch stitch length 3.5 or a straight stretch stitch length 4.0 which stitches back and forth over the straight stitch for a more pronounced look. 8. Select needle stop down and stitch around the monogram initial about 1/8 inside the edge right through the paper and the appliqué fabric. 9. Tear away the paper from the top. 10. Trim the appliqué about 1/8 to ¼ outside the stitching. 11. Tear the stabilizer away from the wrong side. 6
