2 Quilted Stocking Piece together favorite fabrics and add a bit of quilting for a classic look. 1 3 yard of print fabric (pieced front & back) 1 4 yard of coordinating print fabric (pieced front) 1 3 yard each of lining fabric & fusible fleece 13 x18 rectangle of tear-away stabilizer Temporary spray adhesive Thread: matching all-purpose & contrasting quilting Cut Download the Quilted Stocking pattern at sewnews.com/web_extras. Cut one back stocking from the back fabric. From the pieced front fabrics, cut the stocking front sections 1 through 6, alternating fabrics as desired. From the lining and fusible fleece, cut one stocking pair each. From the coordinating print fabric, cut one 2 x6 rectangle for the hanging loop. Use 1 4 seam allowances. Place the stocking front pieces on a flat work surface with the right sides facing up. Orient each piece to form the stocking front (1). Piece together the stocking sections, beginning by stitching the piece-1 lower edge to the piece-2 upper edge with right sides together. Press the seam toward the darker fabric. Repeat to stitch each section in numerical order to create the stocking front. Fuse the corresponding fleece stocking to the stocking-front wrong side, following the manufacturer s instructions. Fuse the remaining fleece stocking to the stocking-back wrong side. Thread the needle with contrasting quilting thread. Adhere the stabilizer rectangle to the stocking-front wrong side using temporary spray adhesive. Channel quilt the stocking, positioning each stitching line 1 apart (2). Tear away the stabilizer beyond the outermost quilting line, leaving the remaining SEWNEWS.COM 35

4 Prepare Download the Appliqué Stocking pattern and templates at sewnews.com/ web_extras. From the coordinating fabric, cut one 2 x6 rectangle for the hanging loop. Fuse the fusible web to the fabric scraps, following the manufacturer s instructions. Cut templates 1 through 6 from the coordinating fabric rectangles, alternating fabrics as desired. Remove the paper backing from each appliqué. Cut one stocking pair from the fabrics and fleece. Fuse the corresponding fleece stocking to the stocking-front wrong side, following the manufacturer s instructions. Fuse the remaining fleece stocking to the stocking-back wrong side. Arrange the appliqués right side up on the stocking-front right side, positioning piece 1 at least 2 from the stocking upper edge and piece 6 at least 2 from the stocking heel edge. Overlap each piece as needed for a pleasing arrangement. When satisfied with the placement, fuse the appliqués to the stocking, placing a PTFE pressing sheet over the fabric surface, if applicable. Adhere the stabilizer rectangle to the stocking-front wrong side using temporary spray adhesive. Use 1 4 seam allowances. Straight stitch 1 4 inside each appliqué perimeter. Stitch two more intersecting stitching lines over the previous stitching (5). 5 stocking-back right side, aligning the loop raw ends with the stocking upper edge and placing the loop 3 4 from the stocking right edge; baste. corresponding lining stocking over the stocking front. Stitch the upper edge, and then press the seams toward the lining. Repeat to stitch the remaining lining stocking and stocking back. over the stocking back and lining with right sides together; pin. Stitch the stocking perimeter, leaving a 5 opening along the lining lower edge for turning. Trim the seam and clip the curves. Turn the stocking right side out. Fold the opening allowances toward the wrong side; topstitch the opening closed. Push the lining into the outer stocking. Topstitch 1 8 from the stocking upper edge; press. FREE-MOTION FUN Instead of simple straight stitching inside the appliqué edges, add free-motion stitching to the appliqué stocking for a fun personalized touch. Drop the feed dogs. Install an open-toe embroidery foot onto the machine. Hoop the stocking front in a handembroidery hoop, centering one or more appliqués in the hoop. Lift the presser foot as high as possible to pass the hoop edge under the foot. Begin stitching along the uppermost appliqué edge. Free-motion stitch inside, outside or around and over each appliqué piece. Experiment with moving the fabric faster or slower and changing the stitch length to achieve different effects. Draw the recipient s name on the stocking using a removable fabric marker, and then stitch over it. Change thread colors as desired, using metallic thread for sparkle. SEWNEWS.COM 37

From the outer fabric, lining fabric and fusible fleece, cut one stocking pair each. From one fabric, cut one 2 x6 rectangle for the hanging loop. Fuse the corresponding fleece stockings to the outer-fabric stocking wrong sides, following the manufacturer s instructions. Position the pom-pom fringe along the front stocking perimeter, with the tape aligned with the stocking outer edge, beginning and ending and the stocking upper edge. Cut off the excess trim beyond the stocking upper edge. Baste the trim in place, stitching along the trim center (6). stocking-back right side, aligning the loop raw ends with the stocking upper edge and placing the loop 3 4 from the stocking right edge; baste. Install a zipper foot onto the machine. If needed, adjust the needle to the leftmost position. corresponding lining stocking over the stocking front. Stitch the upper edge, and then press the seams toward the lining, carefully avoiding the pompoms with the iron. Repeat to stitch the remaining lining stocking and stocking back. over the stocking back and lining with right sides together; pin. Stitch the stocking perimeter as close to the tape edge as possible, leaving a 5 opening along the lining lower edge for turning. Trim the seam and clip the curves. Turn the stocking right side out. Install a standard presser foot. Fold the opening seam allowances toward the wrong side; topstitch the opening closed. Push the lining into the outer stocking.
