4 General Machine Embroidery Information General Cutting Tips for use with the AccuQuilt GO! Follow the basic cutting instructions that came with your Accuquilt GO!, GO! Baby, or Studio cutter. In addition, to assure accurate cuts and minimize stretching or shrinking of fabric during the cutting process, the following tips are recommended: 1. Fabric with fusible web and paper attached is the usual method for cutting shapes for machine embroidery appliqué. Fusible web should be fused to the applique fabric before cutting. See instructions on the product you are using for more information. You can remove the paper by scoring it with a pin after the shape has been cut. 2. Fabric without fusible will cut more accurately if starched and pressed before cutting. An optional method of improving accuracy is to place a piece of scrap paper between the die and the fabric. This is a great use for junk mail and old quilting catalogs! These dies are not dulled by paper because the fabric is cut by applied pressure rather than sharpness. 3. Fabrics with higher thread count (e.g., batiks and quilt shop quality 100% cotton fabric) work best for machine embroidery appliqué. 4. When possible, particularly when fabric without fusible web is being cut, place the fabric straight of grain (selvedge edge) to follow the long edge of the die. 4. Appliqué shapes are directional. Place the fabric on the GO! die with right side of the fabric facing up unless otherwise indicated in the instructions. Shapes that are marked as mirror images should be placed with the fabric on the GO die with fusible/wrong side up. Stabilizer and Layout Tips 1. Use a good quality tear-away stabilizer that tears away easily to avoid stretching the edge and embellishment stitches. Use one that does not show since the stabilizer will not be removed from the area under the embellishment stitches. 2. You may also use a good quality cut-away stabilizer and cut closely to the stitches. Use one that is soft and flexible since the stabilizer will not be removed from the area under the embellishment stitches. Appliqué shape preparation Fusible web instructions: Attach fusible web to the wrong side of the fabric before cutting. Follow the directions for the brand of fusible that you are using. If you are using Steam-A-Seam, you should press it with a hot iron for one to two seconds to secure it onto the fabric. Do not stretch the edges of the appliqué shape as you work. A pin can be used to score the paper for easy removal. Use a mini-iron to attach the appliqué shape to the background fabric. Fit the appliqué shape fabric exactly inside or on top of the placement stitches. You may find it easier to press the edge of the appliqué first and then go back and ease the fabric as you press the center into place. Acid-free glue stick instructions: Use an acid-free glue stick. A glue stick that goes on purple but dries clear is a good choice. There are other water soluble fabric basting glue sticks and glue pens which work quite well. To use, rub a light coating of glue on the background fabric inside the placement stitching. As a rule, clear glue does not show if it gets on the background fabric outside the placement lines. On dark or black background fabrics it can show until the piece is washed. Be especially careful when applying the glue to the background fabric if you do not expect to wash the quilt. You do not have to wait for the glue to dry completely. This kind of glue dries quickly, but even if slightly wet, it does not gum up your needle and the needle and thread go through very easily. If you prefer to have it dry, you can use your miniiron to press it lightly. Temporary Spray Adhesive Some individuals like to use a temporary spray adhesive on the back of the cut shapes. The one adhesive that I have used on occasion is KK2000 / Sulky Spray Adhesive. This adhesive leaves no residue on the machine needle. Other spray adhesives that I have used left sticky residue on the needle. The Sulky adhesive is nice adhesive because it can be removed with heat and completely disappears after hours. Be sure to read and follow all instructions given for the adhesive. Page 4 of 9
5 Instructions for Stitching the Embroidery Filenames, design measurements, and technical information are provided on the following pages. These designs are created with coded color stops after each design element. Color choices are optional and should be considered only as recommendations. Palettes may be changed to meet design and/or individual color choices. All of these designs also look beautiful stitched in a single color. Please see the next page for an illustration of the steps for stitching the embroidery. All designs in this set are stitched in the same order; however, the example shown is for the most complex design with more than one layer of applique in the center design. Most designs are an applique of a circle and then applique of a single layer of shapes. Step One: Each file will stitch an outline of the appliqué shapes and then stop. These are the placement stitches for the appliqué shapes. If stitching all of the edge stitches and embellishments with a single thread color, use that color throughout the design for outlines, edge stitching and embellishments. If using different colors for edge stitches and embellishments, it is advisable to use a thread color that matches the background fabric or a thread color that is a similar lightness or darkness as the color being used for the decorative cover stitching. Placement and tackdown stitches will not show at all through a satin stitch, but may be seen through other decorative appliqué stitches. Step Two: After the placement stitches are complete, remove the hoop from the machine and secure the precut applique shape just inside or on top of the placement stitches using fusible web and a mini-iron or using the glue stick method. NOTE: The glue stick method is preferred when additional layers will be added as discussed in Step Three below. When the shape has been secured, re-attach the hoop to the machine. Change thread (optional) and complete the tackdown stitches. Be sure to fuse the shapes in the order of stitching so that any shapes that overlap will stitch correctly. Step Three (optional depending upon design): If a design has layered appliqué pieces, additional placement stitches will be stitched after the first appliqué pieces have been fused and tackdown stitches are complete. If so, stitch the placement stitches and remove the hoop from the machine. If the fabric underneath the top piece is a darker color and will show through, the top fabric, the first layer of fabric can be cut away inside the tackdown lines created for the top shape. This will prevent the dark shadow from showing through. Fuse or glue the precut applique shapes as in Step Two above. Change thread (optional) and complete the tackdown stitches for this layer of applique. Step Four The edge and embellishment stitches will be completed in the order shown on the Stitch Sequence pages of these instructions. There is a thread stop for the optional color changes after each shape. Complete each step of the decorative cover stitches until the embroidery is complete. Enjoy!
