7 Pre-Cut Appliqué Instructions 1. Print out the necessary pages from the PDF of the appliquè pattern(s). 2. Mark the right side of the pattern pieces so you ll know which direction to lay the pattern on the fabric. 3. Lightly spray the wrong side of the pattern pieces with temporary adhesive spray and allow it to set for a few minutes. 4. Place the pattern pieces on the right side of the fabric and carefully cut them out. PHOTO 1 5. Sew the placement stitch on your hooped fabric. PHOTO 2 6. With the paper still stuck to the right side of the appliqué fabric, spray the wrong side of the fabric with temporary spray adhesive. 7. Place the fabric inside the sewing placement stitch so that it matches the stitching line, and then remove the paper pattern. PHOTO 3 8. Sew the tackdown. PHOTO 4 9. Sew the remainder of the design and repeat for any remaining pieces. PHOTO 5 NOTE: The patterns are sized for the designs as they were made. If you resize the design, you will need to resize the pattern the same amount. You can print out the pattern at the normal size then copy it on a copy machine at the changed size. For example, resize the designs to 80%, resize the printed pattern to 80%. TIP: When Printing the patterns, make sure that the Fit to page option is UNCHECKED in the Print Dialog Box. 25 FAITH Wallhanging Instructions Create a FAITH wallhanging (12" x 24") by using the appliquéd letters from the embroidery collection, Illuminated Christmas by Krista Hamrick # This collection features large appliquéd alphabet letters with flower and Christmas images stitched inside each letter. Use a letter or create words using the letters. There are many possibilities to use with this collection that celebrates the Spirit of Christmas. The FAITH wallhanging showcases the large appliquéd letters on a strip pieced light blue background. Supplies OESD embroidery collection Illuminated Christmas by Krista Hamrick #80055 ⅔ yd. fabric (light blue pieced background) Assorted fabrics and colors for appliqué letters (sample uses dark green, red and gold) ½ yd. fabric (backing, quilt hanger corners and binding) (sample uses blue print) 14" x 26" or ½ yd. cotton batting Embroidery threads Heavy weight tear away stabilizer Mesh cut away stabilizer OESD Appliqué Fuse & Stick Temporary spray adhesive Double sided fabric tape Curved safety pins Thread for piecing Cut (3) 1 ¾" x width of fabric (light blue pieced background) (4) 2" x width of fabric (light blue pieced background) (2) 2 ½" x width of fabric (light blue pieced background) (2) 2 ¼" x width of fabric (binding) (2) 4" squares (quilt hanger corners) (1) 14" x 26" piece (backing) Photo 1 Piecing Background & Embroider: ¼" seam allowance To create pieced background, arrange the three different widths of strips in a pleasing manner. Right sides together, stitch the strips. Press seams down. Photo 2 PHOTO 1 NOTE: The letters (F, A, I, T, and H) can be stitched individually on the pieced background or if you have embroidery software then you can bring the letters in to form the word and split the design. Mark the center of the embroidery design whether it is the individual letters or several letters. Mark the horizontal center on the pieced background the length of the letters to make it easier to rehoop and keep the letters even. Prepare the appliqué fabrics with the Fuse and Stick following the manufacturer s directions. Using temporary spray adhesive, spray the mesh cut away stabilizer and place on the wrong side of the marked pieced background. Using temporary spray adhesive, spray the heavy weight tear away stabilizer and place over the mesh cut away stabilizer. Place double sided fabric tape on the wrong side of the inner hoop. Using template in inner hoop, position onto center mark on pieced background, and hoop. Place hoop on the embroidery machine and find center point. 26 Embroider the letters. Remove from hoop and remove stabilizer. Repeat for the remaining letters. Press. PHOTO 3 Illuminated Christmas FAITH Wallhanging Instructions Photo 3 Finishing: ¼" seam allowance Cut the embroidered piece to 12" x 24". PHOTO 4 Layer a quilt sandwich, by placing back wrong side up, cotton batting, and the wallhanging top right side up. Use curved safety pins to baste the layers together. PHOTO 5 Quilt as desired. The sample features free motion quilting using the same color thread as the background. Square up the quilt, this is trimming the quilt until the sides are equal. This prepares the quilt for stitching on the binding. Wrong sides together, fold each 4" square (quilt hanger corners) to form a triangle. Press. Pin each one to the back top left and right corners.
