2 Machine Embroidery Set by Marjorie Busby for the Accuquilt GO! Home Die by Stacy Michell Die #55379 This embroidery set is designed to be used with the Accuquilt GO! Home Die by Stacy Michell (die #55379). Actual size templates are included with this machine embroidery set so they can be cut by hand or with the Accuquilt GO! die and cutter. The Accuquilt GO! die and GO! Fabric Cutter must be purchased separately. Visit for more information about purchasing the die and cutter. This design set includes 22 different designs with four different appliqué edges. There are four block designs, and 18 individual designs that include individual houses, hearts, trees, and suns. These designs can be merged to create many additional block designs. The block designs require a hoop at least 150 x 160 mm and the individual houses require a hoop at least 120 x 120 mm. Complete documentation and instructions are included. Filenames, design measurements, and technical information are provided beside each image on the following pages. Because the designs are meant to be used in functional quilts, the stitching is smooth and soft enough to be quilted by hand or machine. The designs may be stitched in one thread color, but there are stops to allow for thread color changes for each appliqué shape and each embellishment. Complete directions for thread stops and/or appliqué/piecing are included in these directions. The thread colors used here are only for illustration. It is expected that you will choose colors that are pleasing to you. 6 Accuquilt GO! Fabric Cutter Hints: General Machine Embroidery Design Instructions Accurate cutting with the GO! Cutter is important. Fabric can stretch or shrink during the cutting process with the GO! cutter. To minimize and avoid this problem, the following is recommended. 1. Fabric with fusible web and paper attached is the preferred method for cutting shapes for machine embroidery appliqué. You can remove the paper by scoring it with a pin after the shape has been cut. 2. Fabric without fusible will cut more accurately if starched and pressed before cutting and by placing a piece of scrap paper between the die and the fabric. This is a great use for junk mail and old quilting catalogs! These dies are not dulled by paper because the fabric is cut by applied pressure rather than sharpness. 3. When possible, place the fabric straight of grain to follow the long edge of the die. 4. Unless otherwise noted, place fabric right side up to cut appliqué shapes. Many shapes are directional and must match the direction of the machine embroidery. 5. Appliqué shapes are directional. Place the fabric on the GO! die with right side up. Shapes that are marked as mirror images should be placed with the fabric on the GO die with fusible/wrong side up. Fusible web instructions: Attach fusible web to the backside of the fabric before cutting. Follow the directions for the brand of fusible that you are using. If you are using Steam A Seam, you should press it with a hot iron for one to two seconds to secure it onto the fabric. Be careful not to stretch the edges of the appliqué shape as you work with them. A pin can be used to score the paper for removal if needed. To attach the appliqué shape, use a mini iron so as not to damage your embroidery hoop. Make sure the appliqué shape fabric fits exactly inside or on top of the die line stitches. You may find it easier to press the edge of the appliqué first and then go back and press the center into place. Another way to do this is to stick pins around the edges and remove them as you press. Acid free glue stick instructions: Use an acid free glue stick. A glue stick that goes on purple but dries clear is recommended. To use, rub a light coating of glue on the background fabric inside the placement stitching. As a rule, clear glue does not show if glue gets on the background outside the placement lines. On dark or black background fabrics it can show until the piece is washed. Be especially careful if you do not expect to wash the quilt. You do not have to wait for the glue to dry completely. Glue stick glue dries quickly, but even if slightly wet, it does not gum up your needle and the needle and thread go through very easily. If you prefer to have it dry you can use your mini iron to press it lightly. Stabilizer and Layout Recommendations: 1. Use a good quality tear away stabilizer that tears away easily to avoid stretching the edge and embellishment stitches. Use one that does not show since the stabilizer will not be removed from the area under the dense embellishment stitches. 2. Do not over stabilize for this pattern as multiple layers can make it harder to remove the stabilizer. Minor ruffling on the edges will disappear when the blocks are put into a quilt and The finished block photos show using only one thread color for all stitching. There are thread change stops to allow for as many thread colors as desired for each applique shape and embellishment. 6. When there are fabric overlaps with the appliqué, take special note as to whether the top fabric is a light color or the bottom fabric is a bright color as the bottom fabric may show through the top. To avoid this, use a matching plain color fabric underneath the top fabric. When using two layers of fabric, use a glue stick to glue the top fabric to the bottom fabric. The appliqué should stitch with no problems. Do not use fusible to glue two layers of fabric together, as it is too thick and becomes stiff and will cause problems Marjorie busby Page 6 of 9
7 Supplies Needed: Accuquilt Die # Fusible web Fabric for appliqué shapes Background fabric Tear away stabilizer large enough to hoop (see notes below about stabilizers) Embroidery machine thread in colors to coordinate with fabrics. Neutral color bobbin thread. Stitching and Fusing Order for designs that use all of the appliqué shapes: Each file will stitch an outline of the appliqué shapes and then stop. If stitching all of the edge stitch and embellishments with a single thread color, use that color throughout the design for outlines, edge stitching and embellishments. If using different colors for each of the edge stitches and embellishments, it is advisable to use a thread color that matches the background fabric or a thread color that is a similar lightness or darkness as the color being used for the top stitching. Outline stitches will not show at all through a satin stitch, but may be seen through an appliqué or other decorative stitch. After the outline has stitched, remove the hoop from the machine and fuse all of the appliqué shapes except the heart, inside the outline stitching. Fuse the house shape and chimney shape first. Next, match the roof shape so that it overlaps the top edge of the house and the lower edge of the chimney and fuse into place. The tree will be fused next in the following order: 1 tree trunk, 2 lower branches, 3 middle branches, and 4 tree top. Following that the sun shapes will be fused onto the background inside the outline stitching. (Optional Step for designs with an appliqué heart). Replace the hoop onto the machine and if the selected design includes an appliqué heart, the outline of the heart will stitch next. Remove the hoop and fuse the heart into place. Note: This step is omitted for designs that have a heart with a fill stitch. Return the hoop to the machine for the remainder of the stitching. The stitching will occur in the following order. There is a thread stop for the optional color changes after each object listed: Tree trunk Tree Limbs House Chimney Roof Sun Center Heart Sun 2012 Marjorie busby Page 7 of 9
8 Stitching and Fusing Order for designs that have only a house: Each file will stitch an outline of the appliqué shapes and then stop. You may use the main thread color or a color that matches the background fabric if you are planning to include multiple thread colors for the decorative stitches. You will also want to use a thread color that matches the background if your top stitching is done with a light colored thread. After the outline has stitched, remove the hoop from the machine and fuse all of the appliqué shapes inside the outline stitching. Fuse the the house shape and chimney shape first. Next, match the roof shape so that the overlaps the top edge of the house and the lower edge of the chimney and fuse into place. There is a thread stop for the optional color changes after each object listed: House Chimney Roof Heart 2012 Marjorie busby Page 8 of 9
