Queen of India, 17¼" x 22½", by Lone J. Minkkinen MATERIALS FOR 1 BLOCK 10½" x 16" orange for tiger body Scraps of light orange, white, and yellow 10½" x 16" green for the background Light box Sewing machine set up for free-motion quilting Small, sharp scissors Fabric marking pen or pencil 12" x 18" Fusible web I used Steam-a-Seam 2 Lite. In the July 2014 issue of American Quilter magazine I presented the technique I call quilt-liqué, which is a combination of appliqué and continuous-line quilting. Instructions for making a cat are included in the magazine. Here is a web bonus with instructions for making the Tigress block that I used in my Queen of India quilt and the Pink Elephant block for my quilt Pink Elephants. 2 American Quilter July 2014

3 Place the pieces glue-side down on the wrong side of the fabrics as listed: Orange A Light orange B, C White D, E, H, I, J, K Yellow F, G Following the manufacturer s instructions, press to fuse.

Roughly cut out on the drawn lines. 3 Place the pieces glue-side down on the wrong side of the fabrics as listed: Orange A Light orange B, C White D, E, H, I, J, K Yellow F, G Following the manufacturer s instructions, press to fuse. Cut each piece out on the traced line. 4 Remove the paper backing from pieces B through K but not A. In alphabetical order, lay them glue-side down on the right side of the tigress body A piece. Refer to the appliqué pattern page or quilt photo for correct placement. 5 With the paper backing still attached to the wrong side of the body piece, carefully move the tigress to the ironing board. Press the piece, so the smaller pieces are fused to the orange body. 6 Tape the continuous-line design onto the light box. Tape the tigress body right-side up over the design. Trace the quilting design onto the tigress. 7 8 Remove the paper backing from the orange body piece and fuse to the background fabric. Using black thread and starting at the green arrow, sew on the drawn line to the end of the line at the red arrow point. 9 Square up the block to 10" x 15½". For my Queen of India mini-quilt, I added a pieced batik border and some decorative embellishments to a Tigress block. For the quilting, I echoed the tigerstripe motif in some areas and used traditional quilting designs in others. I finished my quilt with some decorative stitching and a binding of the same black fabric I had used to frame the Tigress block. Please respect copyright laws. Minkkinen CREATE Pink Elephant block Finished size 8½" x 11" 1 2 MATERIALS FOR 1 BLOCK 9½" x 12" green for background 9½" x 12" pink for elephant White scrap for tusks Fabric glue Small, sharp scissors Fabric marking pen or pencil Enlarge the elephant and tusk pieces pattern 200%. Trace the enlarged tusk pieces A and B onto the right side of the white fabric. Using sharp scissors, cut them out on the drawn lines. 3 4 Tape the elephant pattern on the light box. Tape the pink fabric piece over the pattern. Add fabric glue to the wrong side of the tusk pieces and place them on the pink fabric where indicated by red outlines. 5 6 Trace the continuous-line elephant design onto the pink and white fabrics. Place the traced elephant on the background fabric, both right-sides up, and pin to secure. 7 Using a contrasting thread and starting at the green arrow, sew on the marked design to the end of the line at the red arrow point. Notice that the stitching line will secure the tusks in place. 8 9 Using the appliqué scissors, trim the pink fabric ¼" away from the outline of the elephant. Square up the block to 9" x 11½". For my Pink Elephants quilt, I made 4 Elephant blocks, joined them with sashing, and added a pink, pieced border. To quilt, I used a dense free-motion swirl in the green background and a meander in the border. I finished this quilt with black binding to complement the sashing color as well as to frame the quilt.
