SINGER Tooth Fairy Pillow The Tooth Fairy will always find you with your own special pillow! Shopping List: ½ yard wide sturdy woven fabric for Pillow 10 x 14 of white or cream flannel for Tooth Applique 12 pillow form All-purpose sewing thread Black thread for eyes and smile Corner turner or chopstick Disappearing fabric marking tool Hand sewing needle Seam gauge Tooth Applique pattern (see last page)

Sewing Directions: Cut and Prep: Cut one 14 x 14 square pillow fabric for pillow front Cut two 9 x 14 rectangles pillow fabric for pillow back Cut two tooth pieces from flannel using the applique pattern (see last page) Mark the eyes and mouth on one right (fuzzy) side of one flannel tooth piece. Mark Start and End opening on the wrong side (back) of one tooth piece Sew the Face (Note: If you wish, you can draw the face with a permanent fabric marker instead of stitching it) 1. Thread your sewing machine with black thread, for sewing the eyes and smile. 2. Choose a stitch for the eyes. Depending on your machine model, you could use a starstitch, a cross-stitch or any other stitch you desire. (You could also sew the eyes by hand with a hand sewing needle, as an alternative). 3. To sew the first eye, raise the presser foot lifter. Place the marked tooth fabric under the presser foot. Make sure the eye marking is under the opening in your foot. Lower the presser foot and sew the selected decorative stitch for the eye. Raise the presser foot lifter, remove the fabric and leave a long thread tail. Place the thread tail into a hand sewing needle, bring to the back side of the fabric and tie off to secure. 4. Move to the other eye marking and repeat for the other eye. 5. Change your stitch to the straight stretch stitch. Sew along the mouth marking. 6. Pull the tooth fabric out from under the foot, leaving a long thread tail. Pull the top thread to the back with a hand sewing needle, then tie off to secure. Sew the Tooth Applique: 7. Re-thread your sewing machine with thread to match the tooth fabric. 8. Change to a regular straight stitch. 9. Now sandwich the tooth with the face and the other tooth together with the right (fuzzy) sides inside. Use a few pins to hold the two pieces together. 10. Place the fabric under the presser foot. Begin sewing at the start mark. 2

11. Lower the presser foot and begin sewing with the right side of the presser foot aligned with the side of the fabric. 12. Sew for 3 4 stitches. 13. Reverse stitch for 3 or 4 stitches to secure the stitching, then continue sewing. 14. Sew slowly around the curves. For sharp curves or a point, place the needle in the fabric, raise the presser foot, turn the fabric, lower the presser foot and continue sewing. 15. Sew to the end mark. Backstitch at the end of the stitching. 16. Take the fabric out from the machine and trim the threads. 17. Clip around seam allowance, about every ¼ ½ inch. Clip more on the curves and less in the straight areas. Be careful not to clip the stitching. 18. Turn the tooth fabric right side out through the opening. 19. Push the edges out with the corner turner or chopstick. 20. Push the opening fabric into the tooth. Press. 21. Pin the tooth in the middle on the right side of the pillow front. 22. Change the stitch for applique. A zig-zag stitch, pin stitch or straight stitch can be used. 23. Start sewing at the top right part of the tooth through all layers. 3

24. Sew slowly around the curves. For sharp curves or a point, place the needle in the fabric, raise the presser foot, turn the fabric, lower the presser foot and continue sewing. 25. Sew around the tooth applique until you are at the top left of the tooth. Leave an opening so the Tooth Fairy can leave you something for your tooth! 26. Pull the top thread to the back side of the fabric using a hand sewing needle. Tie to secure. 27. Do this for both the beginning and end of your stitching. Sew the Pillow: 28. To prepare the back of your pillow, use your seam gauge. Press ½ from the right side of one pillow back piece along the long 14 side. 29. Fold under and press another ½ on the same side so that there are no raw (unfinished) edges on that side). 30. Do the same procedure for the other back piece. 31. Change your sewing machine back to a straight stitch. 32. Place the folded edge of the pillow back under the presser foot with the right side up. 33. Lower the presser foot. Straight stitch along the fold using the side of your presser foot as the guide. Do this for both back pieces. 34. Lay the front of the pillow (with the applique up) on a table. 35. Lay one back pillow piece, with the right side facing the table, on the front pillow piece. Align the 3 raw (unfinished) edges with the top and sides of the front piece. The folded edge should be just a little more than halfway down across the pillow front. 4

36. Lay the second back pillow piece, with the right side facing the table, at the bottom of the front pillow piece. Align the 3 raw edges with the bottom and sides of the front pillow piece. This back piece will overlap the other back piece by about Pin the front and back pieces together. 38. Sew all the way around the outside of the sandwiched pieces. Use a 5/8 seam allowance. Check your sewing machine owner's manual for stitching guide lines on your machine. 39. When you get to where you started sewing, sew just a little over the previous stitching 40. Talk your pillow out from under the presser foot and trim the threads. 5

41. Trim the fabric across the corners of the pillow. Be careful not to cut the stitching! 42. Turn the pillow inside out through the back flap. Push the corners out with the corner turner or chopstick. 43. Insert the pillow form in the pillow sham. Get ready for your Tooth Fairy visit!
