1 Pioneer Bonnet Basic supplies 1/2 yard of material Muslin or other lightweight fabric - 1/4 yard Thread 7 inches of 1/4 inch elastic Your Young Women's president or clothing specialist for trek will have the pattern

Directions: Cut your fabric into: one 18 inch X 18 inch square one 18 inch X 23-24 inch rectangle (depending on the length of the fabric you have) Fold the 18"X18" fabric in half.

Refold the piece you just cut out and measure 3 1/2 inches up from the bottom on the left side (not on the fold) and make a little 1/2 inch snip with the scissors.

Put the larger pattern for the puffy bonnet on the fold and cut it out. After it is cut out, it will look like this. Refold the piece you just cut out and measure 3 1/2 inches up from the bottom on the left side (not on the fold) and make a little 1/2 inch snip with the scissors. Measure up one inch from that snip and make a 1/4 inch snip there. Unfold the fabric all the way, place it right side down, and then go to the part below the 1/2 inch snip. Fold it in 1/4" and then again another 1/4" and press. Do this to both sides. Sew these two seams. Folded material will be on the wrong side of fabric.

Now cut the ties out of the 18" X 23" 24". Cut two strips 3" X length (23" or 24"). Fold the remainder of the fabric which will be 12" X 24" in half sew I mean so, you have a 6" X 24" rectangle.

Lay one piece of brim fabric with the right side up and stack the three pieces of muslin or other light weight fabric on it and top it with the last piece of the bonnet fabric so the right side is

Cut the brim out, there will be two pieces. Now...Cut three pieces of brim out of the Muslin or the other light weight fabric. Lay one piece of brim fabric with the right side up and stack the three pieces of muslin or other light weight fabric on it and top it with the last piece of the bonnet fabric so the right side is facing the muslin. The muslin or light weight fabric will be sandwiched between the bonnet fabric. You will have five pieces of material. Pin these together and sew with a 3/8 inch seam around the brim of the fabric. Trim the fabric from the edge and cut three pie wedges around the two curves. Turn the brim so the right sides of the fabric will be showing on both sides. Sew a

line about 1/2" from the edge, following the curve around brim. Continue making these parallel lines, like a rainbow until you run out of room. Brim is done!

You can do this by using a pencil to push the bottom sewn side up through the tie you just sewed. The ties will then look like this before you press them. PRESS.

Do this on both sides so that the "z" extends across the width of the fabric. Press. Sew along the folded line, staying as close to the edge as you can.

4 line about 1/2" from the edge, following the curve around brim. Continue making these parallel lines, like a rainbow until you run out of room. Brim is done! Fold the right sides of the tie together and sew the bottom and side together. Leaving the top open. Turn right side out. You can do this by using a pencil to push the bottom sewn side up through the tie you just sewed. The ties will then look like this before you press them. PRESS. Go back to the puffy bonnet. At the bottom of the bonnet sew a 1/4 inch hem in it. Find the 1/4" snip and fold like a "z" down to meet the 1/2" snip. Do this on both sides so that the "z" extends across the width of the fabric. Press. Sew along the folded line, staying as close to the edge as you can. Then flip the fabric over and do the same on the other side. If you don't sew close to the edge, you'll have trouble getting your elastic threaded through the little case you just created. Next thread the 7 inches of elastic through the casing, by attaching a

safety pin to the elastic and pushing it through. Be sure to secure the other end of the elastic to the bonnet so you don't pull it all the way though. Sew both ends in place.

Next attach the ties to the bonnet. Take the unfinished end of one tie and fold a "z: to match the width of the casing. Sew it in place. Do the same thing with the other tie. It is sewn to the inside of the bonnet. With a basting stitch, sew 1/4 " away from the end the bonnet. Grab the bobbin threads on one side and start pulling and scrunching until you have gathers up to the half way point. Now do the same thing on the other side. With the wrong side facing up, pin the brim, matching the unfinished edge of the brim to the gathered edge of the bonnet. Pin in place and adjust the gathers in between so it is evened out. Last step...sew around the gathered bonnet to the brim. Turn right side out and you are done...
