1 Project #4: Tooth Fairy Pillow This is the 4 th project in our Get Kids Sewing Series with SINGER and SkipToMyLou.org. The tooth fairy will always find you with your own special pillow! Choose your favorite fabrics and patterns for a personalized pillow, whether for a girl or boy. Shopping List: ½ yard of wide sturdy woven fabric (for Pillow) 10 X 14 of white or cream flannel (for Tooth Appliqué) 12 pillow form All-purpose sewing thread Corner turner (or chop stick) Disappearing fabric marking tool Seam gauge Straight pins Black thread (for eyes & smile)

2 What to Cut: 1. Cut one 14 X 14 square of pillow fabric for pillow front. 2. Cut two 9 X 14 rectangles of pillow fabric for pillow back. 3. Cut two tooth pieces from flannel using the appliqué pattern. (on page 9) How to Assemble: 1. Mark the eyes and mouth on one right (fuzzy) side of one flannel tooth piece. (TIP: If you are using a disappearing marking pen, make sure you sew before the markings disappear.) 2. Mark START and END opening on the wrong side (back) of one tooth piece. Sew the Face (you can draw the face if you prefer): 3. Thread your machine with black thread for the eyes and mouth. 4. Choose a stitch for the eyes. The star stitch on the SINGER ONE sewing machine was used on the example: 5. Raise your presser foot. 6. Place the marked tooth under your presser foot. Ensure the eye marking is under the opening in your foot. 7. Lower the presser foot and sew 1 star for the eye. 8. Move to the other eye and sew another star. 9. Pull the tooth out from under the foot. Leave a long thread. 10. Flip your tooth to the wrong side (back) of fabric. 11. Pull the top thread to the back of the tooth by pulling the bobbin thread. You ll see a loop of the top thread. Pull the top loop through to the back. Tie a knot with the top and bobbin threads. Trim. 12. Do this for all thread to secure the eyes, so they don t pull out. 13. Change your stitch to a heavy straight stitch such as the straight stretch stitch on the SINGER ONE sewing machine. 2

3 14. Sew along the mouth marking. (TIP: As you are sewing, place the needle in the fabric, raise the presser foot and turn the fabric when sewing the curves. Lower the presser foot and sew a little bit. Then, put the needle down, raise the presser foot, turn the fabric, lower the presser foot and continue. You may want to practice on a scrap of fabric.) 15. Pull the tooth out from under the foot. Leave a long thread. 16. Flip your tooth to the wrong side (back) of fabric. 17. Pull the top thread to the back of the tooth by pulling the bobbin thread and pulling the top loop through to the back. Tie a knot with the top and bobbin threads. Trim. Sew the Tooth Appliqué: 18. Re-thread your sewing machine with thread to match the tooth fabric. 19. Change to a regular straight stitch. 20. Now, sandwich the tooth with the face and the other tooth together with the right (fuzzy) sides inside. You may want to use a few pins to hold the two pieces together. 21. Place the fabric under the presser foot. Begin sewing at the start mark. 22. Lower the presser foot and begin sewing with the right side of the presser foot aligned with the side of the fabric. 23. Sew for 3-4 stitches. 24. Touch the reverse button and sew for 3 or 4 stitches (this is called back stitching). 25. Release the reverse button and continue sewing. DO NOT SEW OVER PINS! Remove the pins when you get close to them. 26. Sew slowly around the curves. For sharp curves or a point, place the needle in the fabric, raise the presser foot, turn the fabric, lower the presser foot and continue sewing. Use this technique as you sew around the tooth. 27. Sew to the END mark. Back stitch at the end of the stitching. 3

4 28. Take the fabric out from the machine and trim the threads. 29. Clip around seam allowance (distance from the stitching to the raw [outside] edge). Clip about every ¼ - ½ inch. Clip more on the curves and less in the straight areas. BE CAREFUL! Don t clip the stitching. 30. Turn the tooth inside out through the opening. 31. Push the edges out with the corner turner. 32. Push the opening fabric into the tooth. 33. Press the fabric tooth. BE CAREFUL! Have someone help you. The iron will be very hot. 34. Pin the tooth in the middle on the right side (pretty) of the pillow front. (TIP: An easy way to find the center of the pillow front is to fold the pillow front in half and press. Then, fold it in half again and press. When you open the pillow front, you will see the center. Remember, anytime you use the iron; make sure someone is there to help.) 35. Change the stitch on your sewing machine for appliqué. A zigzag or straight stitch is fine. On the example, a hand look appliqué decorative stitch was used. Keep the stitch length a little longer because of the thickness of the tooth appliqué fabric. Look at your sewing machine owner s manual for particular settings. 36. Start sewing at the top right part of the tooth through all layers. 4

5 37. Sew slowly around the curves, for sharp curves or a point, place the needle in the fabric, raise the presser foot, turn the fabric, lower the presser foot and continue sewing. Use this technique as you appliqué the tooth. DO NOT SEW OVER PINS! Remove the pins when you get close to them. 38. Sew around the tooth appliqué until you are at the top left of the tooth. Leave an opening so the Tooth Fairy can leave you something special for your tooth. 39. Pull the top thread to the inside of the pillow by pulling the bobbin thread on the back. You ll see a loop of the top thread. Pull the top loop through to the back. Tie a knot with the top and bobbin threads. Trim. 40. Do this for both the beginning and end of your stitching. Sew the Pillow: 41. To prepare the back of your pillow, use your seam gauge. Press ½ from the right side of one pillow back piece along the long 14 side. 42. Fold under and press another ½ on the same side so that there are no raw (unfinished) edges on that side. 5

6 43. Do the same thing for the other back piece. 44. Change your sewing machine back to a straight stitch. 45. Place the folder edge of the pillow back under the presser foot with the right side (pretty) up. 46. Lower the presser foot. 47. Straight stitch along the fold using the side of your presser foot as a guide. Do this for both back pieces. 48. Lay the front of the pillow (with the appliqué up) on a table. 49. Lay one back pillow piece, with the right side (pretty) facing the table, on the front pillow piece. Align the 3 raw (unfinished) edges with the top and sides of the front piece. The folded edge should be just a little more than halfway down across the pillow front. 50. Lay the second back pillow piece, with the right side facing the table, at the bottom of the front pillow piece. Align the 3 raw edges with the bottom and sides of the front pillow piece. This back piece will overlap the other back piece by about 1 inch. 51. Pin the front and back pieces together. 6

7 52. Sew all the way around the outside of the sandwiched pieces. Use a 5/8 seam allowance. The SINGER ONE sewing machine has markings on the needle plate to show where to guide for a 5/8 seam allowance. DO NOT SEW OVER PINS! Remove the pines when you get close to them. 53. When you get to where you started sewing, sew just a little over the previous stitching. 54. Take your pillow out from under the presser foot and trim the threads. 55. Trim the fabric across the corners of the pillow. BE CAREFUL not to cut the stitching! 7

8 56. Turn the pillow inside out through the back flap. 57. Push the corners out with the corner turner. 58. Insert the pillow form in the pillow sham. CONGRATULATIONS! You are done.
