1 Free SEWING PATTERN: Mother and Daughter Reversible Apron Pattern When I was working on an Apron Pattern for 5Berries, I realized how fun it would be to be able to give my customers a FREE pattern for a mother-daughter apron. What is more exciting than baking cupcakes with our favorite little helpers? The reversible apron is so easy to sew and would be a great project for a beginner. Most pattern pieces are basic rectangles that you measure and cut yourself. Since all the seams are hidden, you don t need a serger. It s extra versatile and durable because it s reversible too. Make one side for cupcakes and one side for cookies, depending on your mood! Child Apron is available in two sizes: Small & Large Small: 3y 7y Large: 8y 13y Adult Apron is One Size Fits Most You ll Need: Fabric A (main fabric for one side) Small: 21, Large: 27, Adult: 30 Fabric B (main fabric for opposite side) Small: 21, Large: 27, Adult: 30 NOTE: If you want the apron to look the same on both sides, double the amount of Fabric A. Fabric C (Accent: Ruffle, Strap, Waistband) Small and Large: 15, Adult: 21 Coordinating Thread Scissors Seam Ripper (optional but oftentimes very helpful!) Pins Sewing Machine

2 PATTERN PIECES NEEDED: SKIRT, Cut 2 per Apron Child Small: 13 H x 24 W Child Large: 15 H x 28 W Adult: 18 H x 35 W CHEST RUFFLE, Cut 2 per Apron Child Small: 3 H x 14 W Child Large: 3 H x 17 W Adult: 3 H x 20 W SKIRT RUFFLE, Cut 2 per Apron Child Small: 3 H x 38 W Child Large: 3 W x 42 W Adult: 3 W x 44 W WAIST BAND, Cut 2 for Child Apron or 4 for Adult Apron Child Small: 2.5 H x 42 W Child Large: 2.5 H x 44 W Adult: 2.5 H x 30 W (Cut 4) CHEST PIECE, Cut 2 per Apron Also included on the pattern is the template for cutting the curved edges on the Skirt. You will need the following pattern pieces for EACH Apron: 2 Chest Pieces, using the same or different fabric 2 Skirt Pieces, using the same or different fabric 2 Waist Bands (4 Waist Band pieces for Adult Apron) 2 Skirt Ruffles 2 Chest Ruffles PATTERN LAYOUT. For Adult Apron add two more Waist band Pieces

3 Things you should know: Use a ½ seam allowance unless noted. SEWING TUTORIAL 1. Prepare Adult Waist Bands Take 2 Waist Band pieces, place right sides together. Sew along one short edge, and press the seam open. Repeat with the other two Waist Band pieces to create two large waist band pieces that each measure about 2.5 H x 59 W. 2. Prepare Chest Ruffles a. Fold one short end ¼ toward the wrong side and press. Top stitch using about a 1/8 seam allowance. b. Fold each ruffle in half lengthwise, WRONG sides together. Press and pin. Place 2 gathering stitches along the raw edge. 3. To Gather: Set machine tension to 0 and the stitch length to the longest length possible. Sew two parallel lines along the raw edge of each ruffle, leaving several inches of thread at the beginning and end of the seam. Do NOT backstitch. TIP: Keep the gathering stitch lines LESS THAN 1/2 from the raw edge if possible, so the gathering stitch is inside the seam allowance when the ruffles are attached to the garment. 4. Prepare Skirt Ruffles a. Place Skirt Ruffle pieces right sides together. Stitch together along one short end to create a single long ruffle piece. Press the seam open.

4 b. Fold in half, WRONG sides together. Press and pin. Place 2 gathering stitches along the raw edge. See step 2b for gathering instructions. 5. Make Inverted Pleats on Skirts a. Fold Skirt in half, right sides together. Mark the center of the skirt along the top by making a small clip into the top edge of the fabric (1/4 or so). Measure A from the center fold and make another clip through both layers of fabr ic. Measure again A from that mark and make a third clip through both layers of fabric. Measure one more time A from the previous mark and make a fourth clip through both layers of fabric. When you unfold the skirt, you will have a clip mark in the center, and then symmetrical clip marks on either side from the center (7 total clip marks). Repeat with the other Skirt piece. A =4 (Small and Large Sizes), A =5 (Adult Size) b. Measure ¾ on each side of the center notch, and draw a line down 1 from the top of the Skirt at these two marks. Pinch the fabric together so the marks line up (right sides of the fabric come together) and pin. Repeat with the other 6 notches. (The amount of fabric within each pleat will be 1 ½.) stitch. c. Sew along each of the 1 lines to create the pleats. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the

5 d. Flatten each pleat so the fabric folds on either side of the pleat equally. The center notch should align with the 1 seam of each pleat. Press. e. Repeat the last 3 steps to create the pleats on the other Skirt piece. 6. Finish Skirt a. Gather the Skirt Ruffle: Pull on the bobbin threads to gather the Skirt Ruffle until it equals the length of the sides and bottom of the Skirt. Tie off the gathering threads to hold the gather, and distribute the gathers evenly along each Ruffle. b. Match the long raw edge of the Ruffle with the raw edge of the Skirt and pin together, starting at one side, going along the bottom, and up the other side. Do not pin the Ruffle to the top edge of the skirt. The right side of the Ruffle will go against the right side of the Skirt. Using a ¼ seam allowance, sew the Ruffle to the Skirt. OPTIONAL: Remove the gathering stitches with a seam ripper. c. Place the second Skirt piece on top of the first one, right sides together, sandwiching the Ruffle between the two Skirt pieces. Pin along the sides and bottom. d. Using a ½ seam allowance, sew along the sides and bottom of the Skirt, backstitching at the beginning and end of the stitch.

6 e. Trim the seam allowances so about 1/8 of seam allowance remains. Be careful not to trim into the seam. f. Turn the Skirt right side out and press. Edge stitch along all four sides of the Skirt (do not stitch on the Ruffle), using a 1/8 seam allowance. g. Mark or clip the center of the Skirt along the top edge. Fold in half if necessary to find the center.

7 7. Finish Chest Piece a. Using the Chest pattern as a guide, mark on the wrong side of the fabric the ending points for the Ruffles on both edges of one of the Chest pieces. b. Gather each Chest Ruffle: Pull on the bobbin threads to gather the Chest Ruffle until each one equals the distance from the bottom of the Chest piece to the ending point you marked along the side (roughly X long). Tie off the gathering threads to hold the gather, and distribute the gathers evenly along each Ruffle. c. Pin each Ruffle to the sides of the Chest pieces, right sides together, matching the raw edges. Attach the Ruffles to the Chest pieces using a ¼ seam allowance. OPTIONAL: Remove gathering stitches with a seam ripper. d. Place the second Chest piece on top of the first, right sides together, sandwiching the Ruffle between the Chest pieces. Using a ½ seam allowance, stitch the Chest pieces together along the sides and neckline, but leave OPEN along the bottom. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the stitch. e. Trim the seam allowances so 1/8 of seam allowance remains. Be careful not to trim into the seam. Trim the corners along the top of the neck straps as well. i. NOTE: With this project it s better to trim the seam allowance as opposed to clipping small notches out of the seam allowance. This allows the curves to be smoother and less bulky.

8 f. Turn the Chest piece right side out and press. Edge stitch all the way around, including the bottom, using a 1/8 seam allowance. Be sure to stitch on the main Chest piece, not on the Ruffles. g. Mark or clip the center front of the finished chest piece along the bottom edge. Fold in half if necessary to find the center. 8. Waistband a. Fold one long edge of each waistband ½ toward the wrong side of the fabric and press. Fold in half widthwise and mark the center point of each waistband along the long, unfolded raw edge. i. NOTE: On the Adult waistband, you sewed the 4 pieces together to create 2 waistband pieces. The seam on each Adult waistband piece can be used as the center mark when attaching it to the Skirt/Chest later on. b. Place the first waist band right side up with the folded edge on top. Place the Chest piece on the waist band, matching the center fronts and bottom raw edges together. Place the second waist band on top of the Chest piece, right sides together, with the folded edge on the top. Match the center fronts and raw edges together.

9 c. Carefully match the short ends of the waistbands together, making sure the folded edges are matched as well. Pin along the two short ends and all along the bottom raw edge of the waistbands and the Chest piece. d. Stitch along both short edges and along the long raw edge. Start on one short edge at the folded end, stitch down the short edge, pivot 90 degrees, sew all the way along the bottom raw edge of the waistband to the opposite end (securing the Chest piece between the waistband pieces in the process), pivot 90 degrees, and stitch up the other short end of the waistband. Backstitch at the beginning and end of the stitch. Do NOT stitch on the folded edges of the waistband yet! e. Trim the seam allowance to 1/8 and clip the corners, being careful not to clip into the seam. f. Turn the waistband down so the right sides are out, and turn the corners out at the ends as well. Press. Mark the center front of the waistband, using the center mark you made in step 8a as a guide. g. Sandwich the top edge of the Skirt between the waistband pieces. The center fronts of the Skirt, waistband, and Chest should all be aligned. The waistband pieces should cover the top ½ of the Skirt and Ruffle ends, hiding any raw edges and stitching along the top of the Skirt. h. Pin the waistbands to the Skirt along the folded edges, and continue pinning the rest of the folded edges together on either side of the Apron. j. Edge stitch all the way around the waistband using a 1/8 seam allowance
