3 Halloween Moon These are the materials requirements for one 15 round appliqué place mat. However, it s more economical to make more than one mat at a time. These requirements are for non-directional prints Fabrics Orange for background: 17 x 17 Black for binding and appliqués: fat quarter Backing: 17 x 17 Other Materials Warm & Natural Cotton Batting: 17 x 17 piece I use Warm & Natural for the stability and body it gives the piece. This is especially helpful when satin stitching and eliminates the need for tear-away stabilizer. Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive: 12 x 14 I use Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 because it s not too stiff in the finished piece and it s easy to stitch through. Thread for quilting, and satin stitching I used coordinating Premium Sulky 40 wt. rayon for both quilting and satin stitching. Try a 90/14 topstitching needle. This helps when stitching through multiple layers and fusible adhesive. Prepare the Appliqué Templates Lay the fusible adhesive, paper side up, over the appliqué templates (eyes, nose, and mouth) and trace them onto the paper side allowing about ½ space between the traced templates. Join the right and left mouth templates as you trace them. Roughly cut the templates out about ¼ outside of the traced line.

4 Cut the Fabrics From the orange fabric, cut the mat s top in the following manner: From the black fabric Fold the 17 x 17 square in half and then in half again so that you ve quartered it. Lightly press the folds. As in Illustration A, located on the template itself, place the quarter round template onto the folded square aligning the straight edges of the template with the folded sides of the fabric square. Cut along the curved template to remove the gray area in the Illustration. Cut a 13 x 13 square from the piece to be used for the bias binding and set it aside for now. Fuse the appliqué templates to the wrong side of the remainder of the fabric and cut the appliqués out neatly on the traced line. Fuse the Appliqués Remove the paper backing from the appliqués. Referring to the cover photo or line drawing, arrange the appliqués on the right side of the orange top using the following tips: One of the pressed folds runs through the center of the mouth and nose appliqués. The lowest point on the mouth appliqué is placed 1½ from the raw edge on the fold line. When you are satisfied with the placement of the appliqués, fuse them into place. Quilting Sandwich the batting between the top and backing and quilt as desired over the entire mat, including the appliqués. I quilted a loopy meandering path in orange thread. Satin Stitching Using a narrow stitch width (I usually use the 2.0 setting most often), and a stitch length as short and tight as you can handle, satin stitch all of the raw edges of the appliqué pieces. Binding Because the mat has curved edges, you ll need to bind it with strips cut on the bias. Use your preferred method to do this or follow the instructions below to create a continuous bias strip and complete the binding.

5 Cut the black fabric square in half once diagonally (45 degree angle). Place the two triangle pieces right sides together along straight edge as shown in Illustration B. Press. Using a gridded transparent ruler, measure from the long diagonal edge and draw a parallel line every 2½ on the wrong side of the fabric piece as shown in Illustration C. Fold the marked piece right sides together to form a tube, aligning the edges and pinning the marked lines so one width of the binding extends beyond the edge on each side as shown in Illustration D. Sew the tube together and press the seam open. Cut on the marked line to make one continuous 2½ -wide bias binding strip. As in Illustration E, fold one end of the bias strip at a 45-degree angle to create a point and press. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together and the raw long edges aligned. Press. Place the folded binding strip on the right side of the mat/quilt top aligning raw edges. Stitch through all layers using a ¼ -wide seam allowance. When you return to where you started, stitch the binding beyond the fold you made in the strip at the beginning about ½. Backstitch a few stitches, clip threads and cut off excess binding. Cut the batting and backing fabric even with the mat/quilt top. Turn the binding over the mat s edge aligning the fold of the binding with the machine stitching you just finished. Pin the binding in place. Sew the binding onto the backing. You can do this by machine, from the front, or by hand from the back. If you choose to stitch the binding to the back by machine, lap the binding folded edge over the seam line use to attach the binding to the front. Then, stitch as close to the binding seam as possible from the front, catching the overlapped binding fold on back. Of course, a hand stitched binding is best! Mix the strawberries and lemonade concentrate in a blender until smooth and thick. 2. Gradually add ginger ale. 3. Transfer the beverage to a punch bowl. Stir in any remaining ginger ale and the raisins. Place the gummy worms on the rim of the bowl for a swampy effect. Makes about 10 servings. Artwork 2009 Patrick Lose Sweet & Salty Caramel Apples I found this great recipe at 6 Granny Smith apples 6 wooden sticks 1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels, unwrapped 2 tablespoons water 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 1/2 tablespoons coarse sea salt 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips Directions: 1. Insert wooden sticks 3/4 of the way into the stem end of each apple. Place apples on a cookie sheet covered with lightly greased aluminum foil. 2. Combine caramels and water in a saucepan over low heat. Cook, stirring often, until caramel melts and is smooth. Stir in the vanilla. Dip each apple into the caramel and gently run apples around insides of saucepan to scrape off some of the caramel. Scrape excess caramel from the apple bottoms using the side of the saucepan. Place on the aluminum foil. Sprinkle lightly with the coarse salt and chill. 3. Put the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook in the microwave for 30 second intervals, stirring between each, until melted and smooth. Drizzle over the apples and return them to the refrigerator until ready to serve.
