3 Merry 12 x 19 appliquéd decorative pillow Making this fun and whimsical pillow really did make me feel merry and I hope it brings a smile to your holiday heart as well. Fabric requirements are for non-directional prints Cut yardage is based on 44 of useable fabric width Fabrics Red #1 for M : 6 x 4 Red #2 for e : 3 x 4 Red #3 for r and top and bottom borders: ⅛ yard Red #4 for r and side borders: ⅛ yard Red #5 for y : 3½ x 6 Ivory for background: 9 x 16 Green for holly leaves and pillow back: fat quarter Backing: ½ yard Other Materials Warm & Natural Cotton Batting: Two 14 x 21 pieces I use Warm & Natural for the stability and body it gives the piece. This is especially helpful when satin stitching and eliminates the need for tear-away stabilizer. Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive: 14 x 18 or packaged sheets I use Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 because it s not too stiff in the finished piece and it s easy to stitch through. Thread for quilting and satin stitching I used coordinating colors of Premium Sulky 40 wt. rayon in red and green for satin-stitching and for the quilting on the red and green fabrics. I used Sulky Blendables in shades of ivory to quilt the ivory background. 90/14 topstitching needle This helps when stitching through multiple layers and fusible adhesive. Looped decorator fringe in a coordinating color: 2 yards Five assorted red buttons Polyester Fiberfill Cut the Fabrics From the red #3 ⅛ yard, cut two 3 x 19½ strips for top and bottom border From the red #4 ⅛ yard, cut two 3 x 7½ strips for side borders From the ivory piece, cut one 7 ½ x 14 ½ block for the appliqué background block From the green fat quarter, cut one 12 ½ x 19½ block for the pillow back From the backing ½ yard, cut two 14 x 21 pieces Piece the Pillow Top Use ¼ seam allowances for piecing and pillow construction. Sew the 7½ x 14½ ivory block between two 3 x 7½ red #4 border strips. Press seams toward border. Sew the resulting unit between two 3 x 19 ½ red #3 border strips. Press seams toward border. Prepare the Appliqué Templates Lay the fusible adhesive, paper side up, over the appliqué templates and trace them onto the paper side allowing about ½ space between the traced templates. Roughly cut the templates out about ¼ outside of the traced line. Fuse the letter templates to the wrong side of the assorted red fabrics and the holly templates to the wrong side of the remaining green fabric. Cut out the appliqués, neatly, on the traced lines. Transfer the dashed stitching lines to the right sides of the holly appliqués.
4 Fuse the Appliqués Remove the paper backing from the appliqués. Referring to the cover photo or line drawing, arrange the appliqués on the right side of the ivory background piece. When you are satisfied with the placement of the appliqués, fuse them into place. Quilting Sandwich the batting between the pillow top and its 14 x 21 backing and quilt as desired. I used Blendables thread to densely meander over the ivory area only. This makes the appliqué elements pop out in this piece. I used the red rayon thread and a looser meandered stitch to quilt the red borders. Sandwich the batting between the green 12½ x 19½ pillow back piece and it s 14 x 21 backing and quilt as desired. I used the green rayon thread and a looser meandered stitch similar to the red front borders. Satin Stitching Using a narrow stitch width (I use the 2.0 setting most often), and a stitch length as short and tight as you can handle, satin stitch all of the raw edges of the appliqué pieces in coordinating thread colors. Stitch the dashed Holly detail lines as well. Sew buttons to the pillow top, as pictured Finishing the Pillow I recommend using a coordinating looped fringe for its festive look and the ease in finishing the ends. Using ¼ seam allowance, sew fringe trim to pillow top overlapping the ends. Since the trim s edge is wider than ¼ it will extend beyond the pillow top s raw edge. When the pillow is turned right-side out the trim will align with pillow edge. Place pillow top and pillow back right sides together. Using a ¼ seam allowance, stitch around all edges, leaving a 7 opening on bottom edge for turning. Be sure to backstitch at beginning and endpoints to secure. Clip corners, turn, and press. Stuff pillow firmly with fiberfill making sure corners are fully packed. Hand-stitch opening closed. Admire your work and toss the pillow in a highly visible place where it will prompt the most compliments! Sulky is a registered trademark of Sulky of America

7 Pesto-Cheese Logs ⅓ cup walnuts 1 8-oz package cream cheese, softened ⅓ cup prepared pesto sauce (Classico prepared pesto is great!) ⅓ cup crumbled feta cheese 2 teaspoons cracked black pepper 2 tablespoons finely shredded carrot 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsely Assorted crackers Carrot slivers and parsley for garnish Eat, drink, and be Preheat oven to 350 F. To toast walnuts, place on baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown, stirring frequently; cool. Process in food processor using on/off pulsing until walnuts are ground. Remove from processor and set aside. Process cream cheese, pesto, and feta cheese in food processor until smooth. Spread ¾ cup cheese mixture on waxed paper and form 4-inch log. Wrap waxed paper around cheese log. Repeat with remaining cheese mixture. Refrigerate logs at least 4 hours, until firm and well chilled. Roll each chilled log to form 5-inch log. Combine walnuts and pepper. Roll 1 log in nut mixture to coat. Combine carrot and parsley. Roll remaining log in carrot mixture to coat. Serve immediately or wrap and refrigerate up to a day before serving. Thinly slice log and serve with crackers. Garnish, if desired. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, beating well after each addition. Blend in vanilla. Melt remaining ¼ cup butter in ovenproof skillet or 9-inch cake pan. Stir in brown sugar.
