2 Tis Better to Give 11 x 12 Mini Banner Designed and quilted by Patrick Lose What You ll Need Here s what you ll need to make one 11 x 12 appliqué mini banner or wall hanging. These requirements are for non-directional prints. I used fabrics from my new Mixmasters Scribbles collection from Robert Kaufman Fabrics for this project. The color names and numbers specific to Scribbles are in parenthesis. Red (APL Crimson) for Center Package, Binding, and Backing: ½ yd Dark Blue (APL Blue) for Background: 13 x 13 Yellow (APL Marigold) for Stars: 5 x 7 Golden Yellow (APL Sunflower) for Left Ribbon and Ornament Trim: 4 x 7 Green (APL Kiwi) for Center Ribbon: 5 x 11 Orange for Right Package: 4 x 4 Purple (APL Violet) for Right Ribbon: 4 x 4 Green (APL Lime) for Left Package: 4 x 5 White (APL White) for Gift Tags: 4 x 4 Blue (APL Blue) for Ornament Warm & Natural Cotton Batting: one 12 x 13 piece I use Warm & Natural for the stability and body it gives the piece. This is especially nice for a hanging piece. Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive (18 wide): ½ yd I use Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 because it s not too stiff in the finished piece and it s easy to stitch through without gumming up the needle. Thread for quilting and satin stitching I used Sulky light gold metallic for quilting and black rayon for satin stitching For quilting and satin stitching I used a 80/12 topstitching needle. This is good for stitching through multiple layers and fusible adhesive. Cut the Fabrics Use a rotary cutter, gridded acrylic ruler, and mat for cutting the following: From the Dark Blue square, cut an 11 x 12 rectangle for the Background/Top. From the Red, cut two 2½ x 42 strips, from selvage to selvage, for the Binding.

Prepare the Appliqué Templates Lay the fusible adhesive, paper side up, over the appliqué templates and trace the templates onto the paper side allowing about ½ space between them.

3 Prepare the Appliqué Templates Lay the fusible adhesive, paper side up, over the appliqué templates and trace the templates onto the paper side allowing about ½ space between them. Be sure to trace dashed placement/stitching lines as well. Roughly cut out the templates out approximately ¼ outside of the traced line. Position the traced fusible adhesive templates to the wrong sides of the fabrics you ve chosen for them. When all of the required templates are positioned on their respective fabrics, fuse them into place following the instructions provided by the manufacturer of your fusible adhesive. Cut the appliqués from the fabrics, neatly, on the traced outlines. Do not remove the paper backing yet. Transfer the dashed placement/stitching lines onto the right sides of the appliqués using a nonpermanent marking device. Fuse the Appliqués Remove the paper backing from the Ornament Stripe appliqué. With the paper backing remaining on the Ornament, and referring to the cover photo or illustration for placement, place the Stripe on the Ornament and fuse it into place. Remove the paper backing from the remaining appliqués and arrange them on the Background/ top. Refer to the photo or illustration for placement, paying attention to the way they are layered and note that the bottoms of the packages are flush with the bottom of the Background. When you are satisfied with the positioning of all of the appliqués, fuse them into place. Quilting Sandwich the batting between the Background/top and Backing and quilt as desired over the entire banner, including the appliqués. I used Sulky metallic thread and a fairly dense loopy meandering path. To finish the quilting, satin stitch around the appliqués. To satin stitch, use a fairly narrow (2.0) zigzag stitch and keep your stitch length as close as possible. Stitch over the raw edges of the fused appliqués so that none of the raw edges show. Treat the appliqués as layered elements and imagine that some are closer to you and some farther away. I used Sulky black rayon thread for the satin stitching. Binding Use the two 2½ x 42 Red strips Right sides together, use diagonal seams to join the binding strips as shown below. Trim the seam allowances and press the seams open. Fold one end of the strip at a 45 degree angle to create a point and press. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise with the wrong sides together and the long raw edges aligned. Press.

Place the folded binding strip on one edge of the Background/quilt top, aligning the raw edges of the quilt top and the binding. Stitch through all the layers using a ¼ seam allowance.

Fold up the binding, as shown below, and finger crease the fold.

Stop stitching ¼ from the corner. Pivot and stitch a diagonal line to the corner as shown. Backstitch at least 2 stitches, remove the quilt from the machine, and clip the threads. Fold up the binding, as shown below, and finger crease the fold. Holding the creased fold in place, fold the binding down as shown below, right, and align the raw edges with the next side of the quilt. Start stitching again at the corner, through all of the layers. Stitch around the mini banner, treating each corner as you did the first. When you return to where you started, stitch the binding past the second angled fold about a half inch. Backstitch at least 2 stitches and clip the threads. Cut off the excess binding. Turn the binding over the quilt edge, aligning the fold of the binding with the machine stitching you just finished. Sew the binding onto the backing. You can do this by machine, from the front (in the ditch), or by hand. In either case, miter the corners on the back side of the quilt also. If you choose to stitch the binding to the back by machine, lap the fold over the seam line used to attach the binding to the front. Then, stitch as close to the binding seam as possible from the front, catching the overlapped binding fold on the back. If I miss a spot or two, I just finish it by hand. 8 Festive Fruit Trifle A glass or crystal footed trifle bowl is perfect for showing off this tempting dessert! 2 cans pineapple rings 1 cup frozen sliced peaches, thawed 1 cup frozen sliced strawberries, thawed 1 10-inch angel food cake 1 package (4 serving size) vanilla pudding mix ½ cup cream sherry 2 cups frozen whipped topping, thawed Maraschino cherries (optional) Prepare pudding mix as directed. Cut the cake in half and freeze one half for another use. Tear the other half into chunks. Line the inside of a 2-quart glass serving bowl with the drained pineapple rings and place a maraschino cherry in the center of each ring. Combine remaining pineapple with the peaches and berries. Put half of the cake chunks into the bowl and sprinkle with half of the sherry. Top with half each of the fruit mixture and pudding. Repeat layers. Cover and chill at least 1 hour. Just before serving, top with whipped topping. Serves Artwork 2009 Patrick Lose Bacon Cream Cheese Wreath Create this wreath in the center of a larger platter and surround it with an assortment of crackers. 2 8-oz pkgs cream cheese, softened ½ cup Miracle Whip salad dressing ⅓ cup Kraft grated parmesan cheese 10 slices bacon, crisply cooked and crumbled ⅓ cup green onion slices 1 small bunch of parsely (optional) Mix cream cheese and salad dressing until well blended. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Chill. Place a drinking glass in the center of the platter and form a ring by dropping rounded tablespoonfuls of the mixture around the glass. Smooth with a spatula and remove the glass. Just before serving, garnish the top of the ring with parsely to create the look of a wreath. Arrange crackers around the wreath.
