3 Activity #2 Make Your Own Serape Mariachis have been playing their own style of music since about 1880, or even earlier, and no one knows exactly how they got their name. However, some people believe that they are named after a kind of tree whose wood was used to make stages or the musical instruments that mariachis play. Those instruments include the Spanish guitar (guitarra); the guitarrón, a small bass guitar with a rounded back; the vihuela, a high pitched guitar with five strings; and violins. Most mariachi bands also have at least two trumpets. Besides their instruments, mariachis are known for their unique clothing, the traje de charro (cowboy suit). This outfit consists of a close fitting jacket and pants with brightly colored trim, and a wide sombrero with bright embroidery. At first only men wore the traje de charro and played mariachi, but in the last fifty years more and more women have joined them, either in mixed or all women bands. 1 large paper bag Scissors Markers or crayons 1. Cut the seam on the back of the bag from top to bottom. 2. Cut circle shape at the bottom of bag for neck hole. Cut slits on each side of the bag for armholes. 3. 4 Huevos Rancheros Recipe INGREDIENTS 4 (6 inch) corn tortillas 1 cup canned refried beans 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or vegetable oil 8 large eggs Salt and black pepper, freshly ground 1/2 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated 1 avocado 2 teaspoons lime juice, fresh 1/2 cup prepared salsa 1/2 cup sour cream 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, coarsely chopped 1 green onion, white and green parts (thinly sliced on the bias) DIRECTIONS 1. Heat the tortillas one at a time in a dry skillet until lightly toasted; Place on a baking sheet, spread each tortilla with 1/4 cup of refried beans, and cover to keep warm. 3. Fry the eggs; Season the eggs with salt and pepper. 4. Top each tortilla with 2 fried eggs and 2 tablespoons of the grated cheese. Slide the tortillas under the broiler to melt the cheese. 5. Meanwhile, dice the avocado and toss with the lime juice to prevent the avocado from discoloring. 6. Top each serving with 2 tablespoons salsa and 2 tablespoons sour cream; Divide the avocado among the tortillas. 7. Garnish each tortilla with 1 tablespoon cilantro and 1 tablespoon green onion and serve. Copyright. All rights reserved.
