Clothespin String Painting clothespins string paint paper Pinch the end of the string with a clothespin. Dip the string in paint. Drag the string onto paper to create different lines! For an added sensory bonus, combine paint with some mud and take it outside! This activity is about the process, not the end product. Try different lengths of string to see how it paints differently.

Coffee Filter Snowflakes coffee filters scissors Fold a coffee filter in half three times. Draw simple triangles in different sizes and widths on the folded edges. Cut out. CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Unfold to see your snowflake creation. Tape to the window! If you don t have coffee filters, that s okay! Just use regular paper instead. Cut it in a circle if you d like to. Younger kids have trouble cutting through lots of layers, try folding one less time if they re struggling. Younger kids also don t have a lot of control to know when to stop, so be sure to make larger triangles for them.

Learning Obstacle Course sticky notes markers Write letters on sticky notes and stick them on things around the house (such as on top of and under the table and chairs). Have your child name the letter and stomp on it. CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS From there, name a letter close by and stomp on it, and so on. What makes this an obstacle course is where you place the sticky notes. Make it hard to get to, and let them break the rules. Place the sticky notes close enough together that your child can step from one to another, but far enough apart that it s a stretch. You can do this with anything your child is learning, whether it s letters, numbers, math facts, sight words, or shapes! Try it!

Oatmeal Sandbox tub or bucket dry oatmeal or rice measuring cups, spoons, etc small sandbox toys CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Set out a tub and put dried oatmeal in it to generously cover the bottom (and then some). Set out small sandbox toys, or measuring cups and spoons to use in this edible sandbox. Play in it just like you would sand! This sensory activity can get messy, take it outside if possible, or place it inside another larger tub. You can add other items into this sensory tub. You can add other snack items to keep it edible. Scooping and pouring between measuring cups is great for fine motor control!

Pom Pom Target painter s tape pom poms or cotton balls straws With painter s tape, tape two squares on the floor, one inside the other to make a target. Set pom poms on the outside of the target. CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Blow the pom poms into the center of the target. Make the target bigger for younger kids, it makes it easier to hit. One square might be enough, as well. For older kids, add additional squares around the target. Add numbers to each square for scoring! Always test painter s tape on your floor before using.

Polar Bear Craft paper plate sections of egg carton white paper glue buttons googly eyes CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Glue one section of an egg carton onto the center of the paper plate to make a nose. Cut another egg carton section in half and glue on the edge of the plate as ears. Tear white paper into pieces and glue onto plate to cover. Glue on Googly eyes and a button nose! Younger kids may only do the paper tearing, while older kids can do the entire project. For faster results, try a hot glue gun instead of school glue. Kids can use a hot glue gun with assistance! Just tell them your safety concerns. You could also cut holes out for eyes and make this a cute mask!

Play Dough Numbers paper pencil play dough Write large numbers on a piece of paper. Roll play dough into snakes. CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Trace the written numbers with the play dough. Rolling the play dough is the major part of this fine motor activity, the numbers are secondary. It s okay to use several pieces of snakes to make one number! Younger kids may need help forming the numbers. Instead, you can try straight and slightly curvy lines.

Air Pressure Pom Poms sponges straw freezer bag painter s tape pom pom Dampen the sponges and place on top of each other, inside the freezer bag. Slide the end of the straw in between sponges and seal freezer bag shut around the straw using tape. Lay on a flat surface. Place a pom pom in front of the open end of the straw and press down on sponges to blow air to move the pom pom! Try moving the bag to different angles to see how it affects the pom pom when you blow. Multiple kids? Have a race, or a game with goals on each end (and just one pom pom). Experiment with other objects and toys (cars, spoon, feather, tissue paper), do they move?

Quick Color Sensory Bin tub or box items from around the house in the same color Go on a hunt around the house for objects of the same color. Fill a tub, or box, with the found objects. Explore! This is great to do in a seasonal color, white for winter, red or pink for Valentine s Day, etc. Talk about the color as you re hunting for items and finding different shades of the same color. (This is a dark blue, here s a light blue!) To add in vocabulary, write the color on an index card and stick it to the side of the tub to label it.

Button Icicle Craft white buttons white ribbon hot glue Cut white ribbon to different lengths to make icicles. Line up buttons to cover each ribbon and carefully hot glue them into place. CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Tape the button icicles onto a longer piece of ribbon and hang across a window. Hot glue can be scary, but with help, kids can use it. Just be sure to point out that the tip is very hot and not to touch. Use a craft stick to press the buttons or ribbon down instead of a finger. This is of course fitting with white buttons for icicles, but you can do this in multiple colored buttons for a festive party! Younger kids can help sort buttons by color and line them up how they d like.

Key Shape Matching various keys paper marker Gather various keys in different sizes and shapes. Trace the keys on a piece of paper. Match the keys to their correct outline. This is a great concentration activity and trialand-error. Also teaches mirror images of things, plus comparing and contrasting. You can do this with other objects from around the house too. Be creative! Older kids can help do the tracing themselves! (They ll realize that the more precise they are in tracing, the easier it will be to match up!)

Dot Sticker Designs stickers butcher paper marker tape Tape down a large piece of paper. Draw a wacky design with a marker. Provide stickers to trace the design. Older kids can draw their own design to trace. Younger kids may need help removing stickers, it sometimes help to remove the outer section that s not the stickers from the page. For younger kids, start with a small, simple design so they can accomplish it in a short period of time.

Shaving Cream Numbers baking sheet or tray shaving cream Squirt a large amount of shaving cream on a tray or baking sheet. Have your child spread it out and use their fingers to write numbers. CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Erase the number away by swiping your hand across it and start again! Anything can be written in the shaving cream: letters, numbers, sight words, math problems and so on! No shaving cream? Try whip cream, or finger paint! Keep the mess to a minimum by putting down a towel or shower curtain first.

Color Snow snow water food coloring squirt bottle / syringes CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Fill squirt bottles and syringes with water. Add food coloring to each. Take outside and color freshly fallen snow! No snow? Make your own by mixing baking soda and shaving cream. Be careful of cold fingers getting wet. You can also bring a tray of snow inside to do this, just color it fast before it melts!

Heart Bird Feeder toasted bread heart cookie cutter peanut butter (or alternative) bird seed bowl / dish pencil yarn / string CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Cut a heart out of a piece of toast and spread peanut butter on both sides. Pour bird seed in a bowl and press the covered toast into the seed to completely cover it. Punch a hole in the corner of the heart and hang for the birds to eat. If the toast gets too dry, it might break when punching the hole. You may want to try punching the hole prior to toasting. Older kids can make this more decorative if they desire. No heart cutter? Don t worry about it! Just use a glass to cut a circle instead! Or leave it big!

Paper Plate Sock Toss paper plates scissors yarn/string socks Cut the center out of paper plates. Tie a yarn to the plate and hang them in an open area at different heights. Toss socks through the holes of the paper plates! Be sure to hang them low enough for your child to be able to throw through it. For young kids, hang it at their height so they can stick the socks through with their hands if needed. Older kids can have a line they need to stand behind.

Textured Tape Resist Heart painter s tape card stock paint variety of tools, comb, rolling pin, fork, etc CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Tape a heart outline on a piece of card stock. Paint over it using a variety of tools you have, such as a comb, fork, rolling pin, etc. Remove the tape once the paint is dry to the touch to reveal the heart! Use delicate surface painter s tape if at all possible and remove immediately after paint is dry to the touch. Be creative with the objects you use, think about textures they could make. For added texture, you could add a bit of flour to the paint.

Snowman Puppets thin cardboard (from cereal box) white paint glue cotton balls beads / sequins / buttons / googly eyes yarn CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Draw a snowman on thin cardboard, cut out and paint white. Stretch out cotton balls and glue to cover snowman. Embellish with beads and yarn to make eyes, buttons and a scarf. Cut a 4-5 inch strip from the cardboard and roll it into a circle. Glue it onto the back of the snowman to make it a puppet. Stretching cotton balls is great for little fingers! This is a great job for young kids to do while you re prepping snowmen. Younger kids likely won t be able to add the embellishments themselves, you can use markers to draw them on instead. When making the rolled cardboard for the puppet, keep in mind the size of your child s fingers and make it big enough to easily slide on and off.

I Love You Scavenger Hunt colored paper marker scissors CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Cut out several hearts (at least one per day until Valentine s Day) out of colored paper. Write one things you love about your child on each heart. I love. Hide one heart per day until Valentine s Day. Have your child hunt for it and then read it to them. Hang the collection on their bed door as they find them. You can do one per day, and also one big scavenger hunt today. Just do extra hearts! Be sure to do one heart per child. If more than one child, make the hearts different colors so you can tell them which color to find. Be creative in the things you love, be sure to include behaviors they do that you love!

Heart Garland colored paper scissors string or yarn tape CLICK FOR MORE DETAILS Fold paper in half and cut a heart out, repeat to make lots of hearts. Tape the hearts onto a long piece of string. Repeat to make several lengths of these. Hang in a window! Stack the hearts one above the other to hang the garlands in a window from top to bottom. Otherwise tape them so they re side by side to string across the window. Trace a half of heart onto the folded paper for young kids to cut. Use -4 different colors of paper and have older kids pattern the hearts on the garland.
