Clip the P on the Pumpkin orange cardstock green scrap paper marker hole punch Cut a pumpkin shape out of orange cardstock. Add a stem. Write the letter P several times around the edge of the shape. Fill in with other letters. Also write that letter in the middle, along with the word (P is for Pumpkin). Punch a hole through every one of the letters that the object starts with. (Punch the letter Ps.) Punching holes is tricky and takes practice and teaching. It takes a lot of fine motor control. Clothespins are easier for younger kids and are great for strengthening hands. Do all upper or lowercase for younger kids, or you can just do shapes on a square or circle. Mix upper and lowercase together for older kids.

Name Sticker Match paper marker letter stickers Write your child s name at the top of a paper. Set out several letter stickers that are the letters in their name. Have your child stick matching sticker letters below each letter to spell their name over and over. If you don t have letter stickers, you can cut small squares and write the letters on those. Then have your child glue them in place. Don t be concerned about them spelling their name in full before moving onto the next line. Let them match several of one letter if they please. Work on writing instead of stickers. Have your child write the letters over and over below your initial name.

Sticky Spider Web painter s tape newspaper Criss-cross tape across an open doorway to make a spider web. Scrunch up newspaper into balls. Throw the newspaper balls into the spider web to stick to it. Not all painter s tapes are created equal and it won t all stick the best. Masking tape sticks better, just be careful of your woodwork. Instead of newspaper, try cotton balls or pom poms, or even yarn! For younger kids, tape the spider web low enough so they can touch it to stick the newspaper to it instead of throwing it.

Dumpster Diving large box trinkets and treasures newspapers Find a large cardboard box to play in! Wad up a bunch of newspapers and put in the box. Add trinkets and treasures (such as small cars) to the box. Jump in and go diving for treasures! Can t get a hold of a big box? That s okay! Use a clothes basket instead. This can get exciting and a little wild, be sure to watch for the box tipping over. Once all the trinkets are found, give your child markers and crayons to draw inside the box.

Beaded Spider 4 pipe cleaners beads pom poms string scissors Take 4 pipe cleaners and lay them straight out, together. Wrap all four tightly in the center with another pipe cleaner to make 8 legs for a spider. Glue - pom poms on the center, with a hot glue gun, to make a body and head/ face. Thread on beads to each leg and hang it in a window! Add a face to the spider with a marker, or stickers if you have them. Older kids can bead the legs in a pattern (ABAB, ABCABC, etc) Younger kids may need help by holding the pipe cleaner for them, and them sticking the bead on it.

Walk the Tape Line painter s tape pom poms (optional) straws (optional) Tape several lines of tape on the floor with painter s tape. Make one zig zag, one straight, one curvy if you can! Walk forwards, sideways, backwards along each line of tape, trying not to fall off! Add pom poms! Blow a pom pom along the line, gently trying to keep it on the line of tape. Young kids and old, love this activity. Its great for balance and coordination. Start simple, slide along the straight line and work up to walking sideways and backwards on the zig zag. Blowing a pom pom and keeping it on the line is nearly impossible, but tons of fun. Let kids figure it out through trial and error.

Googly Eyes Jello Sensory Bag gallon sized freezer baggy oz. Jello baking sheet googly eyes tape Mix Jello according to the package. After mixing Jello, pour it into a gallon sized freezer bag. Lay flat on a baking sheet in fridge until cooled off. Add googly eyes to the Jello. Tape it to the window so the sunlight shines through it. Explore and move the pieces around inside the sensory bag. Add enough Jello in the baggy so that it covers the baggy when lying flat. But not too full that it can t be moved around. To secure the sensory bag, you can either tape the top of the baggy shut or double bag it. Young toddlers may try to bite at the baggy, please use supervision at all times.

Canned Food Blocks canned food Bring out as many canned foods as you have from the pantry to use as blocks! Stack up the cans as best you can, making towers, or walls. Knock em down and start again! Canned foods come in all sizes. This is a great opportunity for older kids to sort and stack them by size. Do this on the floor and preferrably on a soft surface (carpet or a rug). If the canned food falls down then it won t have far to fall and won t hurt little toes as much. If you re worried about smashing little toes, have your child put on a pair of shoes first.

Nature Paint Swatch Color Match paint swatches nature magnifying glass (optional) Collect various colors of paint swatches from a paint store. Head outside to hunt for the colors! Can you find something in every shade? Head to your local paint store or big box store and get some free paint swatches (try to keep nature colors in mind). For younger kids, just look for the colors in general, but older kids can find the different shades (darker and lighter). You can do this indoors too!

Member Pom Pom Sort by member, Vicky muffin tin or egg carton pom poms tongs (optional) spoons (optional) Set out a muffin tin and pom poms of different colors and/or sizes. Sort and put the pom poms in the muffin tin by either color or size. Use spoons or tongs to transfer the pom poms back and forth. Younger kids may not grasp the concept of color and size. At this age, just move them back and forth. Even with their fingers it s a pinching exercise! Older kids can count pom poms after sorting to see which color or size has the most (and least). If your child can t use tongs, don t push it! You can use it along side him to show how it works, but let him just pinch with his fingers.

Hammer Golf Tees play dough toy hammer golf tees or toothpicks Roll a thick tube of play dough and place on the table. Poke a couple golf tees in the play dough to show what to do. Set out golf tees and a toy hammer to pound them into the play dough! You can also do this with a piece of Styrofoam instead of play dough! Add a fun element of using a real hammer! The kids will love using a real tool. You can also use toothpicks instead of golf tees. They re just smaller and slightly harder to hit.

Q-Tip Painting q-tips paper paint Set out a piece of paper along with Q-tips and paint. Dip the Q-tips in the paint and use it just like you would a paintbrush. Paint a masterpiece! This is about the process and definitely not the end product. Let them explore. What ways can you paint with it? Draw with the tip? Roll it on its side? Make dots? Save their masterpiece! Hang it on the fridge, and take a photo of it for keeps. Your child will feel special.

Pumpkin Stamping small pumpkin sharp knife paint paper tray (optional) tape (optional) Cut off the top of a small pumpkin. Add paint to a tray and dip the cut part of the pumpkin in the paint. Then stamp the paint covered pumpkin on a piece of paper to make pumpkin prints. Tape the paper inside the tray to hold it in place! Add a touch of fun by drawing faces on the pumpkin stamps, or glue googly eyes to them to make monsters! To make more accurate prints, stamp it lightly on a paper towel first. Stamp over and over again with one dip of paint to get more!

Classic Finger Painting paint paper baking sheet or tray (optional) Tape paper to a baking sheet. Squirt different colors of paint on the baking sheet. Let your child explore the paint with their fingers to make their own masterpiece! This is a fantastic sensory experience and kids may very well end up with arms and face covered in paint. I recommend Crayola Washable Paints for easy cleanup. Use only primary colors or paint and challenge older kids to make new colors with their fingers. Challenge older kids to write their name or make a simple drawing with a pencil and then use their finger to trace it with paint, or make dots with their finger to fill it in.

String a Spider Web string or yarn paper marker tape Make two lines of chairs to form a hallway. Tie a string to the back of a chair and string back and forth between the chairs. Write several S s on paper and tape it to the back of the chairs next to each. Follow the string back and forth and find all the S s. Have your child pull the string through, but help them as it can get caught and break. Ask about the letter S along the way to help the child recognize the letter. Tell them about words that start with S, or ask what the letter is they re looking for. For older kids, you can do the same sight word on each paper to practice! Repeat with different sight words.

Spaghetti Slime cooked spaghetti food coloring oil (vegetable) tub or bucket kitchen utensils Make extra spaghetti for dinner and use the leftovers for sensory play! Add food coloring and a tad bit of oil to the cooked spaghetti. Put the colored spaghetti in a tub to explore. Add kitchen utensils to cook. Split the spaghetti into different bowls and add different colors to each bowl. Take this outside if possible, or put down a tablecloth (or shower curtain or large towel) to make clean up easy. Food coloring may stain hands so don t do this before a special event!

Clothespin Spider 8 clothespins paper plate paint googly eyes Paint paper plate and clothespins to match. Glue two googly eyes to the paper plate as eyes. Clip 4 clothespins on each side of the paper plate to make spider legs! Add number and counting practice by writing numbers on the clothespins (-8 or -4 twice) and the corresponding number of dots where they should be placed on the legs. Take your time decorating the plates! Paint them with fun colors, or draw designs. Make them crazy spiders, or monster spiders! No paper plate? Cut a circle out of paper. No clothespins? Use paper clips!

Bottle Bowling plastic bottles ball Line up plastic bottles to go bowling. Six or ten bottles work well. Roll a ball at the bottles to try to knock them all down. Set them up again and bowl again! Tape marks on the floor where the bottles are to set for easy setup! Younger kids may do better with less bottles. Try three if there s a struggle. Try other ways of setting up the bottles. Can you knock them all down if they re lined up in a row?

Leaf Garland clear tape leaves Lay out a long piece of clear tape, sticky side up. Stick collected leaves to sticky side of tape. Hang garland of leaves in a window. Repeat for more! You can also paint the leaves before hanging them up! How pretty! It s helpful to keep the tape length to a couple of feet, make several smaller strands to hang from the top of a window (instead of 6 feet to span across a window) Any tape works for this! However clear tape will be more visually appealing so your eye sees the leaves.

Magic Balloon Experiment plastic bottle balloon funnel baking soda vinegar Pour oz of vinegar in a plastic bottle. Funnel TBSP of baking soda into a balloon. Secure the top of the balloon to the opening of the bottle carefully. Hold balloon up to drop baking soda out of the balloon and into the bottle. Hold tight to where the balloon is secured to the bottle. Watch the balloon blow up! Don t add too much of either vinegar or baking soda, it could cause the balloon to erupt. The science behind the experiment: When baking soda and vinegar mix it creates and gives off a gas (Carbon Dioxide) that blows up the balloon. Carbon dioxide is heavier than air though so it will not float in air if you release it. It is not as light as helium. You can reuse the balloons to do the experiment over and over.
