1 Sunny Sue s Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club of the Olympic Peninsula January 2018 To further the act and skill of quilt making and to foster an appreciation of quilts old and new Nordic Noel Holiday Party Happenings The 2017 SBSQC Holiday party was held December 13, as the final business meeting of the year. Nordic Noel was a celebration of giving to the Communities of Sequim and Port Angeles, giving recognition to Club members, and sharing the holiday spirit with our quilting buddies~. The holidays are about traditions for most of us, and our party is no exception. The festivities began to the refrains of Christmas music played by Andy Geiger and Trevor Hanson while members arrived, bringing donations, voting for their favorite challenge Christmas stockings. The party was planned by the quilt group Secret Sewers, many members get involved making Stockings for foster kids in the area, helping in the kitchen, and collecting donations. Our Emcee was Merrie Jo Schroeder, decked out in her Christmas finery. Awards/recognition Vicki Nauman was announced Member of the year, the result of votes cast by the membership at the November business meeting. Norma Herbold was honored with a Lifetime membership. Deb Cooper reminded everyone a member doesn t need to reach a certain age (i.e., be old ) she only has to be a member for 25 years. To quote Norma: I don t feel old! Loretta Bilow will be the 2018 Featured Quilter for the 2018 quilt show.

Thank you, Membership Committee Toni Tobin, Anne Davies, Bonnie Filgo, Dawn Kerns, Judy Markle, Barb Richardson, & Judy Stevens Community Quilts Thank you cards and quilts for the quilters received from Head Start children, teachers and families COMMUNITY QUILTS YEAR IN REVIEW Charitable Recipients quilts Olympic Medical Center - 50 for their end of life patients. We call these Comfort Quilts. They are approximately 36 x 48. Head Start - 74 for children birth to pre-school who receive full day care. These are the same size as the comfort quilts, 36 x 48. The program manager was overwhelmed by this act of generosity. They serve 200 children on the peninsula. Serenity House - 18 lap size quilts for the children of the residents receiving temporary housing in their facilities. The quilt sizes varied according to the inventory on hand. Sarge s Place - 12 twin bed quilts for the homeless veterans who transition through their program. Habitat for Humanity - five lap size quilts which were awarded to fellow Community Partner recipients. No homes were completed this year. First Step - Led by Marilyn Williams and Sharon Clayton, a group calling themselves First Steppers make a variety of hand sewn items and quilts under the umbrella of our club. Fund Raising via raffles and auctions Recipients - 14 quilts Sequim Lavender Festival, Sequim Pioneer Association, Sequim Free Clinic, Soroptimist of Sequim, Sequim High School Robotics Club (2), Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, Sequim Valley Lions Club, Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County, Boys & Girls Club of the Olympic Peninsula, Clallam Mosaic, OMC Foundation, Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishers and Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club (in-house raffle). Club members made this generous contribution to our community possible by completing and donating 198 quilts. Their eagerness to participate and commitment to this outreach is beyond measure. We ended the year with 75 available quilts on our shelves. Page 4

5 Quilters College....returns to its traditional date of the third Wednesday in February this year. Join us on February 21st for a day full of fun and learning. The cost for the day is $5. Signups will start after the Business Meeting on January 10th. If you have questions please contact Judy Anderson or Seri Mylchreest. Wendy s Wisdom.. (from her experience as a sewing machine repair wizard) I ve seen canned air recommended to blow out the bobbin area of a sewing machine. Please resist. Canned air blows the lint and dust deeper into the machine. Better to use an adapter for your vacuum to clean it out. Or take a brush and dab all around the area, you ll be surprised how much lint will come out. Then put a tiny drop of oil on the hook, and off you go. Storage and Inventory The team met at the storage unit each Monday from January through fall. The work of organizing after the move to the unit had been begun by Merrie Jo Schroeder and is now completed. Shelves were purchased and filled with bins which were labeled by color and/or theme, piles of batting was measured and folded, bulk bundles of fabric were rolled and shelved and non-usable donations were set aside for our sale. Finished quilts are shelved by size and recipient group. UFO s are together and will need attention in There are over 60 quilt tops that need quilting. While we have added to our list of volunteer quilters, this remains our biggest hurdle. Carol Prael, Cindy Smith and Susan Bermel will continue this rewarding and creative committee work for Message from the SBSQC Member of the Year.. Thank you, dear quilting friends, for choosing me Member of the Year. I am overwhelmed (and, embarrassed by my babbling response). In my eyes we are all Members of the Year doing what we can to encourage and support our craft, our community and each other. Quilting IS a journey and the best advice is to travel with a friend. My biggest honor is that you invite me to come along. From my heart, I thank you. Vicki Nauman VEEPS NEWS.. There will a sign up sheet at the January 10 th Business Meeting for the Sewing and Stitchery Expo Bus Trip to Puyallup scheduled for Thursday, March 1. The cost will be $30.00 for the bus. Thank you, Janet Lenfant and Barbara McArthur Page 5

7 EDUCATION COMMITTEE 2018: HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL A new year has begun. Hope you all have an exciting and profitable year. Are you looking forward to finishing up some UFO S? Me too. To start this new year, Maggie Ball of Dragonfly Quilts will be joining us in January for a lecture, a sampler class on precise and pristine piecing, and a half-day class on drafting quilt blocks. Looking forward to what she has to teach us. In March, April and May the classes will be on Batting, Basting, and Binding. Watch for sign ups beginning in January. Helps with finishing up of a quilt. Have you started your Mystery Quilt for this year? Need help or have a question to ask? Norma Herbolt and Doris Hartness are available to answer your questions. I'm ready to start the mystery quilt. Who doesn't like a good mystery, right! Don't forget there will be lunch and a movie on the 5th Wed of the month. That will be in January, May, Aug, Oct. Come and enjoy a brown bag lunch and watch a movie about Quilting. Maybe pick up a tip or two. Speaking of tips, have you tried the felted wool pressing mats? They are wonderful for getting a flat pieced block. An all-natural, 100% wool felted ironing mat does the job that you remember your mother doing when she ironed. Everything lays flat and eliminates the seam-line that showed up on the top of the block. Wool felt has the natural ability to absorb the heat and pulls moisture from the air. So with steam or without you get a flat block. It s like pressing on both sides at once. Check it out on line or at a quilt shop. Sandra Foster, Education Invitation.. Kitsap Quilters cordially invites you to attend their 32nd annual quilt show, Nordic Treasures, to be held February 16 th and 17 th, 2018, at the Presidents Hall, Kitsap County Fairgrounds, in Bremerton, Washington. Show hours are Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is $5.00 donation; children 10 and under, free. Our show will feature over 200 quilts on display, vendors from Washington and Oregon, quilt related demonstrations, members boutique, silent auction and café. You are also invited to visit our website at for more information on our guild and our quilt show. Sincerely, Mary Jo Brisbon Publicity Chair Newsletter Submissions Information for the next newsletter should be received by the 25th day of the month. Send to Penny Cahoon mpre1@netzero.net Phone: Scraps will be distributed to members by the 1st Wednesday of each month. Page 7

8 It s a Mystery! Brought to you by Norma Herbold, Doris Hartness, and the Education Committee Step One Before you start, please read the instruction through to the bottom. There is more than one way to construct this unit. In fact in step four, we will be constructing the same unit in a different size in an entirely different method. If you have a favorite method for this unit, please do what works best for you. 1. Background fabric: Cut ½ squares 2. Medium Light Color One: Cut 26 2 ½ X 4 ½ rectangles 3. Medium Light Color Two: Cut 26 2 ½ X 4 ½ rectangles 4. On the backside of the background square mark a line from point to point on each square. 5. Place the background square right side to right side of Medium Light Color one rectangle. Pin in place. Stitch one thread width to the outside of the drawn line. (On the other side of the line from the middle of the rectangle) This is the equivalent of a scant quarter inch. 6. Once stitched, you can trim ¼ away from the stitched line, and press toward the rectangle, or you can press and then trim. Some quilters prefer to trim only the extra from the background triangle, leaving the extra from the rectangle. This serves as a guide when sewing. Are you a visual person? Here is a video on You tube. A word about pressing. I find if I press on flannel with a dry iron, I get a nice flat press. I also use Best Press. Do what works best for you. 7. Repeat step five on the other end of the rectangle. Voila! You have a flying goose! Your unit should measure 2 ½ by 4 ½. Square up only if necessary. 8. Repeat to make a total of 26 flying geese from Medium Light Color One. 9. Repeat to make a total of 26 flying geese from Medium Light Color Two. Place all your units in a baggie marked Step Number One. geese as part of their design? Now how many blocks can you name that have flying Page 8
