1 Sunny Sue s Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club of the Olympic Peninsula November 2017 To further the act and skill of quilt making and to foster an appreciation of quilts old and new. Community Quilts Community Donations.. Three deserving organizations received quilts at the October business meeting. Janet Gray of the Boys & Girls Club received a red, white, and blue quilt for their patriotic fundraising event to be held on Veterans Day. The funds from their silent auction will be used to support clubhouse operations and to enable children to reach their full potential, especially those who need them the most. This striking quilt was made and quilted by Carolyn O'Neill. Loretta Bilow presented a stuffed bear wrapped in a patriotic joy quilt for the auction. Mary Jane Duncan and Irene Snodgrass representing Clallam Mosaic, received a large quilt (maker unknown) that was auctioned off at their Tour of Italy event that was held on Saturday, October 14th. $500 was raised for this quilt and funds go toward supporting day programs and network activities for families and caregivers of developmental disabled in Clallam County. Phone Carol for directions at Lastly, Diana of Head Start was treated to a showing of 54 quilts lovingly made for infants and children to age 5. She was brought to tears as she told us about this special program and how appreciative they are for our support.

2 Christmas Stockings There are instructions on our website. We have pre-cut strips ready to assemble and lots of pre-cut stockings and batting ready to go.we have received several generous donations of fabric, so you can take some of that home if you wish. Please bring in any that you have already finished too. Martha requests that you save your finished challenge stockings until the Xmas party. Turn those in enclosed in a brown paper bag and you will be given a number, so that the voting will be anonymous. IMPORTANT DATES Business meetings will be held at 10:00 am on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. Board meetings will be the 1st Wednesday from 9:00 to 9:30 am. November 1 9:00 Board Meeting Baguettes November 8 10:00 Business Meeting 12:30 Art Quilt Sues (Karen s Quilt Shop) November 15 We are taking donations of travel size shampoo, lotion, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc., as stocking stuffers for the foster kids. One year they suggested playing cards, chewing gum and hair scrunchies for the girls. Cash donations will be taken at the Xmas party. We will be needing volunteers to help us set up on Dec 13th before the party and two ladies to "man" the table in the lobby to take those donations. Thanks for all your help. Team members: Maryann Ballard, Gail Mabbutt, Loretta Bilow, Bonnie Filgo, Judy Richey and Barbara Richardson VEEPS Update Kamp Sew-a-lot was a lot of fun. People shared techniques with every one so we learned stuff. We had two demonstrations which was new to kamp activities. The first was Carolyn on how to make the clothes line bowls and the second was Pepai showing how to make a quilt out one fabric that looks like three or four were used. We had a little excitement when the roof leaked. There were 34 people. There were a lot of projects finished and some new ones started. 3 Membership Renewal: The Membership Committee is ready to begin collecting 2018 membership renewals. CHECKS MUST BE DATED JANUARY 1, 2018, or later. The annual membership fee is $40 and may be paid by cash or check by January 31 st, After that date delinquent dues will incur an additional reinstatement fee of $10, per the SBSQC Standing Rules. Please complete the renewal form which can be obtained on the SBSQC website (Members Only Section) or at the membership desk during weekly meetings. If you have not purchased a new name badge, you can also include that with your renewal. Membership renewal forms and checks may be mailed to SBSQC, PO Box 211, Sequim, WA 98382, or at dropped off at the membership desk. Receipt of payment and 2018 Membership Cards will be available at the February business meeting. We are looking for more members to show their quilts or demonstrate techniques made from library books or DVDs. Please share! New materials are arriving! Look for these DVDs: Quilting With Rulers (Patsy Thompson), and Strategies for Quilting Big Quilts in Sections (Marti Michell). These exciting books will, also, soon be in circulation: Modern Machine Quilting by Catherine Redford, and Katja Marek s latest book, Distinctive Dresdens. Now that the year is ending, and the hectic holiday season is beginning, please check your homes, cars, nooks and crannies for library books that need to be returned. Brought to you by Norma Herbold, Doris Hartness, and the Education Committee It s a mystery after all the quilts I ve made I still have so much fabric! That s why, three years ago when I joined an online mystery quilt group, I vowed to only make quilts out of my stash. I m working on number 6 at the moment and so far so good. My grandsons love theirs; the one that lives on my bed is a favorite; and my sister was thrilled when I sent her the one I made in Christmas fabrics. I confess there was one that just didn t tickle my fancy. Perhaps because pink is not my go to color. Doris and I were approached by a Sunbonnet Sue to see if we would like to lead a mystery quilt through the newsletter. We contacted Sandy Foster, our Education chair for 2018, and we have a go! I think we will be a good team. Having taken a beginning quilt class from Sandi Foster way back in the 1990 s, Page 3

4 Mystery continued. Doris is a meticulous piecer. Once I write the directions, she will follow the instructions to see if they make sense BEFORE you ever get to see them. We will work out the kinks and hopefully provide you with a fun project that will bust some of that stash. No stash! You can always buy fabric or I ve not yet visited, but I hear tell Community Quilts has an excellent store. What I can tell you is, this mystery will be a two color quilt with a background fabric. The finished size if 58 X 58. Fabric requirements will be given in the December newsletter. 5 Education.. Quotes about Patsy Thompson s class held in October : Best class I ve had in years. She really enhanced the presentation with her husband s help using the camera gear. Glad I took this one. Patsy's class was a wonderful opportunity to learn how to use straight and arc rulers with a domestic sewing machine. She was a great teacher who demonstrated each technique before guiding us to do it ourselves. She worked the room and gave positive feedback. Thank you for bringing her to Sequim. The best thing I took away from the class is that Patsy taught us how to build a framework with our rulers for the rest of the quilting; regardless if it was more ruler work or free motion." Patsy Thompson is an outstanding teacher. Not only did we learn basic ruler quilting techniques, we learned how to adapt ruler work to our own quilts and how to incorporate free motion quilting into the designs to create "one of a kind" showpieces. I learned a lot. Patsy was a fantastic teacher. I was feeling like I was in a quilting rut and this class really opened some new possibilities. Classes with Maggie Ball in January Maggie Ball from Bainbridge Island will be coming to Sequim to give us a lecture and trunk show on Wednesday morning, January 17th In the afternoon she will be teaching a 3 hour class "Pattern Drafting 101" at the Masonic Lodge. The next day she will teach a one day class "Six-block Bear's Paw Sampler" at Karen's quilt shop. The cost for the Pattern Drafting class is $32 and the Bear's Paw full day class is $66. Descriptions of the classes from her website: Pattern Drafting 101 Learn the basics of successfully drafting patterns for any sized block. Simple exercises on graph paper walk you through a methodical approach, ensuring accurate measurements for the cutting sizes of block components. Receive guidance about planning your quilts to use efficient piecing techniques, and to calculate the fabric requirements for each component. No sewing in this class. Duration: Half-day Skill level: All levels. Six-Block Bear's Paw Sampler You will learn to piece a variety of new blocks derived from the traditional Bear s Paw pattern, all featured in my book, Traditional Quilts with a Twist. Pick out your favorites to make this attractive large lap six-block Bear s Paw quilt. I'll also share an alternative 5-block setting and ideas for creative variations. In this class, emphasis is placed on precise piecing and techniques to make your triangles precise and pristine.
