1 Tualatin valley quilt guild NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2013 FEBRUARY 2013 GUEST SPEAKER IS BILL VOLCKENING Bill Volckening will be the TVQG guest speaker at the February general meeting. He will speak about his collection of New York Beauty quilts. Bill will explore the New York Beauty quilt through American history. Bill s collection of New York Beauty quilts includes more than 50 samples, mostly quilts and a few tops, plus ephemera. BLOCK OF THE MONTH At the January meeting, LoisMarie Mayer presented a block called Square Dancing. It is from McCall s Quick Quilts, May This block should be made with BATIK fabric. Follow the directions to get 2 blocks, 14 x 14 inches (finished). Sylvia Richen will be presenting the new Block of the Month at the February meeting. Charity Quilt Group continues to help others There was a suggestion from one of our members that we do a special collection each month for the Good Neighbor Center. Betty and I talked to Heidi, the Good Neighbor Center director, about this and she was pleased with the idea. Heidi mentioned that this month they could use gallon-size, zip lock type bags. They will really appreciate anything we can gather for them. Therefore, each month TVQG will announce an item of the month for members to bring to the General Meeting. We will be in contact with Heidi to create a list of needed items and assign any items to an appropriate month. For instance, school items might be a priority in August or September. Donations will be given to the Good Neighbor Center. If you are unable to donate a quilt, perhaps you can donate some of these items instead. ITEM OF THE MONTH FOR FEBRUARY IS GALLON-SIZE ZIP-LOCK-TYPE PLASTIC BAGS. Betty M. & Vergie K. GO SEE THIS PLAY! The Gallery Theater in McMinnville is presenting the play, QUILTERS, Feb. 22 to March 16. ANOTHER WAY WE CAN HELP Martha Granda, a TVQG member, is also a member of the King City Knitting and Crochet group. They have been asked to donate knitted or crocheted pillows to the Portland Pilot Project. The Pilot Project assists homeless and elderly people. TVQG members can help in this endeavor by saving all of the small pieces of fabric that are left after cutting pieces for blocks or after trimming those blocks to their correct size. Those little pieces are great for pillow stuffing. So, when you are working on a quilt, don t throw those pieces away. Save them in a bag and bring them to a Guild meeting. Martha can pick them up at the meeting. Our President, Marie, is also a member of King City Knitting and Crochet Group and will accept your donations of scraps.

5 Marie G. had found all these February and early March 2013 events for us. 1. Fiber Artists Working in Series You may have missed the opening February 1st, but you don t have to miss the exhibit at the Architectural Heritage Center in Portland it lasts until February 26 Georgia French - "Concentricities" This exhibit shows works from five Studio Art Quilt Associates artists, each one selected for her originality of design and strong personal vision. Five new works from each artist's own personal series are on display. Architectural Heritage Center 701 SE Grand Ave Portland, OR Exhibits at the La Conner Quilt Museum, near Tillamook, OR Because of recent architectural work at the museum, the museum will be open every day to accommodate visitors. Color, Design, & Inspiration: Kaffe Fassett & Brandon Mably February 14 - March 24, 2013 Who are Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably? Ask a quilter and they will tell you: quilters and fabric designers. Ask a knitter and they will tell you: knitters and knitting pattern designers. They will both be correct. In fact, Kaffe, and his studio partner, Brandon have worked in many different media, including: needlepoint, mosaics, rugmaking, tapestries, yarn and fabric design, and costume & set design. Kaffe s newest book, Kaffe Fassett Dreaming in Color (2012), is an autobiography, in which he shares rich, detailed stories about his lifelong creative journey as well as hundreds of glorious photos taken along the way.

6 Kaffe Fassett is a prolific author of books on color and design in craftwork. A recent book, Kaffe Fassett s Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts (2010), is full of quilts composed of their signature fabric designs made from simple squares, rectangles, and diamonds. Many of Kaffe s quilts are created as a joint effort with Liza Prior Lucy who does much of the sewing for his quilts. At left, Bordered Diamonds from the Kaffe Fassett s Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts book. Image courtesy Abrams Books. In addition to designing fabrics and quilt patterns, Brandon Mably designs knitwear patterns for Vogue Knitting and Rowan Yarns, and leads workshops in knitwear design and use of color throughout the world. Brandon has been the Studio Manager of Kaffe Fassett Studio in London England for many years and has worked closely with Kaffe in the design, creation, and execution of knitwear, tapestry, patchwork, mosaic, and mixed media artwork. This exhibit will feature knitwear by Brandon. Kaffe and Brandon have been collaborating for many years; adding new fabric lines to their colorful collections each year and designing new quilting and knitting patterns. Their most recent collaboration is a new knitting book, Knitting with the Color Guys (2012). Image at right: Zigzag Throw by Brandon Mably from the Knitting with the Color Guys book. Crazy Quilts, Silks, & Satins February 14 - March 24, 2013 In addition to designing fabrics and quilt patterns, Brandon Mably designs knitwear patterns for Vogue Knitting and Rowan Yarns, and leads workshops in knitwear design and use of color throughout the world. 7 During the 1890 s and for about thirty years, the Crazy Quilt rage continued. Many older Crazy Quilts are composed of bright-color fabrics in silks, velvets that have been sewn to a foundation fabric and have the added embellishment of embroidery stitches, as seen in the 1885 quilt below. The quilts in this exhibit will include lavishly embroidered quilts as well as quilts that don t include the fancy stitches. Seen at left, Log Cabin Var.: Square in a Square, a foundation pieced quilt (c.1890) made with many silks and shiny fabrics. Why not make the trip to the coast a two-day event? There s the ice cream at Tillamook Cheese, and exotic cheeses at Blue Heron; Jane s fabric patch, and barn quilts (be sure to get a map at Pacific Restaurant, at st St, is a great place for lunch or dinner; don t be put off by its unimaginative outside. 3.
